Lenovo announces the ThinkVision LT1423p, a mobile touchscreen monitor with pen support (video)
Maybe you're the kind of person who needs an external display even on business trips. Or maybe you've got a non-touch PC, and getting a touchscreen monitor seems like the best way to jump on the Windows 8 train (you know, as opposed to replacing your PC altogether). Whoever you are, Lenovo's banking on there being more of you out there. The company just announced the ThinkVision LT1423p mobile monitor, a 13.3-inch display that weighs a shade under 1.6 pounds, making it light enough to potentially stuff in your carry-on. Once it ships sometime in Q2, you'll be able to pick it up in wired and wireless versions, meaning you can connect over either USB 3.0 or WiFi. (While the wired one is powered over USB, the wireless model has a 10-hour battery, the same one inside the ThinkPad Tablet 2.) Ether way, you're looking at a 1,600 x 900 AH-IPS, Gorilla Glass panel. The screen supports pen input, too, and comes with a writing implement that registers 256 degrees of pressure sensitivity. Like we said, it'll ship sometime in the second quarter, priced at $349 for the wired version and $449 for the wireless one. KDDI's Mi-Look watches your elderly parents, treats them like prisoners (video)
KDDI's looking out for Japan's elderly, or putting them under house arrest -- it's hard to tell which. Hitting stores this September in the land of human-assistive tech, the Kyocera designed Mi-Look is a simplified GPS-capable, mobile-monitoring system that puts you in control of your Luddite parents. The waterproof device packs a strap-activated "I've fallen and I can't get up" buzzer and comes in an appealing shade of hospital white, all while keeping track of your folk's whereabouts. Seems innocent enough, right? Well, it's not really up to Ma and Pa to opt-out of location tracking -- the phone does it automatically, emailing a list of relatives with coordinates and distance traveled. And for that extra special Lindsay Lohan-lockdown touch, the charging port's sensor will not only count the number of times your rents pass by, it'll also answer calls automagically. Starting to feel a little bad about this? We don't blame you, but keep in mind the compassionate tech's being targeted to patients with memory loss issues. Still, we have a suspicion those with claims of a "stolen childhood" might be using this as revenge. Payback's a cellphone, apparently. Video demonstration after the break.
Toshiba outs 14-inch, DisplayLink-powered USB mobile monitor for $200
It's been a hot minute since we've seen a new DisplayLink-equipped secondary monitor, but it looks as if the drought is ending today. Toshiba has quietly pushed out a new 14-inch mobile USB display, weighing just 2.8 pounds and retailing for a freakishly affordable $199.99. That sum gets you 1366 x 768 pixels, 220 nits of brightness -- if you plug in an optional AC adapter -- a 400:1 contrast ratio, 16 millisecond response time and native support for Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. As these things go, a simple USB connection is all that's required to provide basic power to the unit and send the signal, and it seems to be shipping now for those who've outgrown their 7-inch Mimo.
