  • Ed Boon teases new Mortal Kombat with decreasing subtlety

NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon has been offering innocuous images seemingly suggesting a new Mortal Kombat game on the horizon for quite a while now, but with yesterday's appearance of a leaked promotional poster, the franchise co-creator has grown much less coy. The poster that appeared on Reddit features a mangled human spine, the familiar dragon's head logo of the Mortal Kombat series, and the phrase "Who's Next?" Though his earlier attempts at teasing fans were far more obscure - this photo of a car's bumper would be dull coming from anyone but Boon - Boon embraced the poster, borrowing that monochrome dragon's head for use as his Twitter icon and replacing his account's header image with that "Who's Next?" slogan. Following a host of questions from fans, Boon has apparently given up on his attempts to tease his Twitter followers. "I don't suppose there's anything I can do to make you think we still MIGHT be announcing Injustice 2 in #five days is there.....?" Boon later asked no one in particular. Assuming there is a new Mortal Kombat in the works, it seems quite likely that we'll hear all about it at the upcoming E3 conference, though Boon may spill the beans a bit early. That "MKX" bumper photograph was part of a slow countdown Boon had been updating on Twitter that is slated to hit zero on June 2. We'll keep a close eye on NetherRealm Studios, and report back on anything that might emerge. [Image: WBIE]

  • Mortal Kombat to keep fighting online despite GameSpy closure

The May 31 expiration date for GameSpy's online services is drawing near, but NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat reboot will keep hosting bouts of traumatic blood loss. Ed Boon recently reassured a fan on Twitter that even without GameSpy, players will be able to settle their differences online in the least diplomatic way possible. Boon's response follows a clarification from Rockstar that online play for Grand Theft Auto 4, GTA5, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 (except for the Mac version) would transition from GameSpy rather than simply shutting down. There are hundreds of games that have yet to be plucked from the imminent wreckage though, including titles from Activision, Capcom, Sega and Electronic Arts. [Image: Warner Bros. • Don't expect to see the first three Mortal Kombat games on Wii U

In depressing news for fans of gory fisticuffs and color-coded ninjas, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has squashed the possibility that the first three Mortal Kombat games might appear on the Wii U virtual console. Boon was asked about the chances of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3 coming to the virtual console in their fan-favorite Super Nintendo incarnations. His response was concise: "0.0%." While disappointing news, it should be pointed out that all three of these games have been re-released numerous times on various other platforms, making it very easy to find your Mortal Kombat fix elsewhere. Alternately, if you're just in it for the characters and fatalities, 2011's Mortal Kombat retells the story of the first three Mortal Kombat games with far superior fighting mechanics, online multiplayer and a surprising wealth of single-player content. There's a new Mortal Kombat game in development, according to Mortal Kombat Legacy Producer Lance Sloane. When asked about the status of the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, Sloane said to GamerHub.tv at San Diego Comic-Con that the studio is "just figuring out the business side of it, and when we would do it... and how do we sync up with the launch of the game they're working on now, the next game." Of course, "they" would likely mean NetherRealm Studios, which developed the latest Mortal Kombat game first launched in April 2011, and recently brought it to Steam. We'll know for sure in due time, but we'll also keep our hopes alive that the project is a point-and-click adventure game set in the Mortal Kombat universe.

NetherRealm Studios' gory one-on-one fighter, Mortal Kombat, is now available on PC platforms via Steam and other digital distribution services, collecting all previously released DLC in an all-in-one package. A retail version is set for release on August 6. Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition includes all DLC released in the months following Mortal Kombat's 2011 console launch, adding the playable characters Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, and yes, Freddy Krueger from the A Nightmare on Elm Street film series. Fellow slasher film star Jason Voorhees was not invited to the tournament, unfortunately. PlayStation 3 owners can currently pick up a digital copy of the original, non-Komplete version of Mortal Kombat at a steep dis[k]ount. For this week only, Mortal Kombat is available from the PlayStation Network for $9.99, and the price is slashed to $5 for PlayStation Plus members. The PS Vita version is also on sale for $9.99, or $5 for PS Plus subscribers.

Everybody's favorite ninja-turned-skeleton-head-ghost-ninja (Mortal Kombat's Scorpion, obviously) will fight his way back from the grave and into the DC Universe this Tuesday, June 11, when he becomes the latest DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us. Scorpion's implementation in Injustice appears faithful to his incarnation in 2011's Mortal Kombat, though he won't play identically due to differences in Injustice's engine and gameplay mechanics. Ol' Scorps' toasty new threads were designed by legendary comic book artist Jim Lee, seen above talking design with NetherRealm's Ed Boon. Scorpion will cost $5.

The Komplete Edition of the 2011 Mortal Kombat finishes Windows PC this summer, with the digital distributed fatality pinned for July 3. Retail annihilation is due a month later, so duck and cover on August 2 in Europe, and on August 6 in North America. As per the version released for consoles last year, Komplete Edition features all the game's DLC, with the expanded roster including a certain Freddy Kreuger (the regular creepy kind), Kenshi, Scarlet, and Rain. Conduit and Kinect Star Wars developer High Voltage Games, who've just released the "addictive" puzzler Zoombies for iOS, is handling the PC port. %Gallery-189225%

Warner Bros. will submit Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition for classification in Australia. GameSpot reports the fighter will seek a rating under the country's new R18+ classification for games. Mortal Kombat was refused classification in the region when it launched two years ago and also lost a subsequent appeal.Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge will be Australia's first game classified as R18+. Australia finally relaxed its censorship laws last year to allow games intended for those over the age of 15 to be sold in the country.

Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition is just about half-off today on Amazon, priced at $16.50, down from its standard $30. When we say it's "just about half-off," of course we mean it's dangling by the barest thread of blood-soaked connective tissue. Of course. This deal applies to PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the kollection, which launched in February last year. The Komplete Edition bundles all of the game's DLC, 15 Klassic Skins, three classic fatalities, the Mortal Kombat: Songs Inspired by the Warriors album, and the 1995 Mortal Kombat film. Still, the movie is the most painful part of the entire package.

When it's time for the year's Evolution Championship Series fighting game selections to be announced, normally the process shakes out like this: A post goes up on Shoryuken, the fighting game community cheers and/or jeers for a while, and then everyone gets back to practicing. This year, however, things are a bit different.Seven games have been announced as official selections, as per usual: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter X Tekken (ver. 2013), King of Fighters XIII and Persona 4 Arena. The eighth game shakes up some paradigms, being selected through an ongoing charity fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.Basically, players donate money to the BCRF in the name of whichever game they want to see in the final slot, be it Dead or Alive 5, Darkstalkers 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, or any of the 13 other eligible titles. Whichever game's community raises the most money for charity before the end of this month will be selected as the final, official EVO 2013 selection.Donation links can be found here, so if you want to forcefully subject people to a global MLP: Fighting Is Magic tournament, you can do so for a good cause.

Kevin Tancharoen's fatality-focused webseries Mortal Kombat: Legacy will be coming back for a second season, according to the exceptionally hokey announcement video above. Having wrapped up most of the important origin stories in season one, season two will focus on the Mortal Kombat tournament itself.Tancharoen aims to deliver "more fighting, more action" and "more visual effects," things that vocal fans of the first season have apparently been clamoring for. The entire season has been written, although there's no word yet on when the first episode is expected to debut, or whether cast members such as Jeri Ryan will be reprising their roles from the first season.

Another EVO Championship Series has come and gone, taking with it the hopes, dreams and aspirations of a community. EVO is the Super Bowl of fighting games, but also a cultural mecca for those who share the genre as their life's passion. This year's proceedings were punctuated by surprises, upsets and incredible displays of skill and technical prowess, perhaps more so than any EVO in recent memory. Last year's Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition champion, Fuudo, tied with three others for ninth place at this year's tournament, for instance. Conversely, Perfect Legend successfully defended his throne as Mortal Kombat champion, becoming the first person to retain their title since Daigo Umehara's SSF4 victory in 2010.Head on past the break for results of the seven major tournaments that took place over the weekend, along with videos of the Grand Finals for each game, courtesy of IGN. If you're pressed for time, allow us to make some recommendations: Watch the first rounds of the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and SSF4:AE Ver. 2012 Grand Finals for two of the most exciting KOs of the weekend, and peep the King of Fighters XIII Grand Finals for the most excitable stream commentators in the entire world.

For those of you who want to test your might at any moment, no matter where you are, Amazon has a deal to help you out. Right now, if you purchase the Wi-Fi model of the PS Vita, you'll get a free copy of Mortal Kombat, along with a 4GB memory card – which will hold you over just fine until you order a more reasonably-sized card.Mortal Kombat seems like an odd choice for a console pack-in, given its status as both a port and a super-gross violent game, but it is at least a good game! Prospective Vita owners have not always been so fortunate.

  • Deja Review: Mortal Kombat (Vita)

We're of the firm opinion that your time is too precious, too valuable to be spent reading a full review for a game that was already reviewed many, many years ago. What's the point of applying a score to a game that's old enough to be enrolled in the sixth grade? That's why we invented Deja Review: A quick look at the new features and relative agelessness of remade, revived and re-released games. When I said that Mortal Kombat was the best fighting game of 2011, it wasn't a statement I took lightly, nor was it a decision I arrived at easily. I've always loved Mortal Kombat as a franchise, for its hokeyness and that special part of American gaming history that it represents, but I had never thought any of its games were ever particularly good – especially from tournament-level fighting game standards. Mortal Kombat changed all that, not only by staying true to the series' ridiculous goofball roots, but also by being a solid, well-balanced, mechanically rich piece of game design. I know, I couldn't believe it either.Fast forward just a little over one year to the day, and it's time for Mortal Kombat's encore performance on the Vita. Thankfully, the portable version of Raiden and friends' adventure through Outworld is just as fun, gruesome and reliable as its console counterparts, though perhaps a little rougher around the edges.%Gallery-146183%

In addition to the plethora of new klassic kostumes coming to the male ninjas of Earthrealm and Outworld, two costume-deprived female ninjas are also set to receive additional warrior wardrobe options in the Vita version of Mortal Kombat. In addition to her console outfits, Mileena will be fitted with her leotard getup from Mortal Kombat 2. Skarlet, on the other hand, will receive both Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 outfits, as well as what appears to be an additional alternative costume. Meanwhile, Kitana and Jade have been decked out in old-school digs for months and therefore do not receive new fashion.

In addition to having all of the original content from the console version and its character DLC, the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat will include a plethora of klassic costumes exclusive to the little handheld that could. The additional costumes include Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 versions of Ermac, Noob, Rain, Reptile, Smoke, (Unmasked) Sub-Zero and Scorpion. There's also a new alternate costume for Kenshi, as well as Mortal Kombat 2 versions of Ermac, Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Sadly, no new outfits for the female ninjas or any of the non-ninja contingency, but we can't find fault in adding any amount of variety to a year-old game, even if Ermac wasn't actually ever in MK2.

What is Mortal Kombat's Mileena doing way out in the middle of the desert? She's totally ... walking around and stuff, stepping on railroad tracks and brandishing her signature sais. Presumably she's getting ready for her upcoming appearance in MK Vita? Perhaps! We just can't be sure.
