Back in July, a judge approved a $60 million settlement between Electronic Arts and a number of college athletes over the use of their likeness in games. Athletes with a valid claim, all 24,819 of them, will finally get their share of the settlement. The average player will receive $1,600 after lawyers for the class action take their 30-percent cut. Of course, the lead plaintiffs (Ed O'Bannon, Ryan Hart and Sam Keller) will get the most at approximately $15,000 each. A group of 21 players will receive $5,000 each for their role as representatives in the class action.

EA Sports revived the official NCAA Football Facebook page this morning after one-and-a-half years of silence, posting a four-second video of a heart monitor and the caption, "Our heart still beats for the big game... #NationalChampionship." Fans wondered if this signaled the return of EA Sports NCAA Football -- the series ended in 2013 following a class-action lawsuit over EA's use of student likenesses in its games. Despite the surprise Facebook post, the NCAA series is not making a comeback, EA tells Engadget.

Recommended Reading highlights the best long-form writing on technology and more in print and on the web. Some weeks, you'll also find short reviews of books that we think are worth your time. We hope you enjoy the read. Hackers Remotely Kill a Jeep on the Highway -- With Me in It by Andy Greenberg Wired This piece from Wired actually sparked a recall that affects 1.4 million Fiat Chrysler vehicles. During the test, hackers were able to use an exploit to "kill" the engine, disable the brakes and track location. Pretty scary stuff.

  • EA cancels college football title for 2014 amid ongoing legal disputes, lack of NCAA support (update)

A few months back, EA Sports announced that the 2014 installment of its wildly popular college football franchise wouldn't carry the NCAA label after the governing body chose not to renew its licensing contract. Today, the gaming outfit has announced that there will not be a campus-packed release... at all. Admitting that the choice was "profoundly disappointing," GM of American Football for EA Sports Cam Weber cited lawsuits with student-athletes over the use of their likeness without compensation as a cause for the decision. Of course, this is compounded by the NCAA and a number of conferences (Big Ten, SEC and Pac-12 included) no longer supporting the game. "The ongoing legal issues combined with increased questions surrounding schools and conferences have left us in a difficult position – one that challenges our ability to deliver an authentic sports experience," Weber wrote in a blog post. EA also pledged a commitment to NCAA Football 14 that's already in consoles of the faithful where, no matter what, Johnny Football is still celebrating the same way. Update: Moments after EA posted the above news, the company announced that it and the CLC (Collegiate Licensing Company) had settled "all claims" with Sam Keller and Ed O'Bannon for using their names and more. This leaves the NCAA as the remaining defendant in the lawsuit over use of player likenesses. For more on the filing, consult the coverage links that follows.

Things are really starting to heat up on the grid iron. The good and the bad are starting to show themselves and play each other. One of those meetings is on Sunday at 4pm when the Cowboys head to Denver in the hopes of picking up their third win. Then of course on Monday night is the big game Favre lovers have been waiting for. To us its a solid divisional rivalry, but we're sure a number of people will tune in just for the revenge angle. On the CFB field there is another great SEC matchup with LSU vs UGA, but we also get to find out who's worse, Oklahoma or Miami? Finally, the baseball season is coming to an end with only 7 days left until the playoffs, so basically we're just glad to see it end. Hockey also kicks off this week with the Capitals and the Bruins with many more games to follow.NFL Dallas Cowboys at Denver Broncos Fox 4:15 PM Sun Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings ESPN 8:30 PM Mon College Football LSU at Georgia CBS 3:30 PM Sat Oklahoma at Miami ABC 8:00 PM Sat NHL Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins Versus 7:00 PM Thursday Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues Versus 3:00 PM Friday MLB Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers ESPN 7:05 PM Friday

We don't know if you realized this, but since July 16th, the only new releases for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have been three football games and a NASCAR game. When times get this tight, you've got to take the fun where you can get it, and PS3 gamers got a nice fun infusion yesterday with a big update to the PSN store. You can now find demos for DiRT and NCAA Football 08, trailers for Folklore and Timeshift, a making-of doc for Heavenly Sword and a few assorted movie trailers. Hopefully, there's enough there to get you guys through, just remember, when times get tough: Warhawk's just around the corner.

Are you ready for some football? We said, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!Ahem, well, we hope so, because this week it's your only choice for new retail games on the Xbox 360. Whatever your tastes in sports games, though, this marks a special week for football games. Yes, this week we finally see the release of 2K's return to football, All Pro Football 2K8. It's time to see if a non-licensed football game can make a dent in a world where Madden is the only NFL game in town. Will players gravitate towards (historically) more refined gameplay in lieu of licensed teams? We'll just have to wait and see. It will be interesting to see how APF2K8 fares against this week's other release, NCAA Football 08.[Via Joystiq]Update: Clarified question meaning.

And now we're happy to announce that we have our first Bringing it Home demo! Up for download off the Marketplace is a NCAA Football 08 demo coming in at 684MBs of what we expect to be full of football fun. Though, this cannot be guaranteed. We welcome football fans to give the demo a download, tell us what you think and share your overall impressions as we aren't overly familiar with the genre. Heck, maybe you could count every frame in a second to see if the game runs at its promised 60 FPS.

  • McDonald's to host game tournaments in Dallas/Ft. Worth

McDonald's -- in what must have been pitched in a meeting full of McSynergy -- is sponsoring a series of "midnight" gaming tournaments in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. McDonald's has recently tried to attract gamers through DS Wi-Fi, Happy-Meal giveaways, and an ad campaign that looked a little too familiar to some. Of all of these things, we give McDonalds the most credit for hosting these game nights, speaking to gamers directly through controllers.Players can register online now to play each Saturday night in Tekken 5, Guitar Hero, and NCAA Football '07. The weekly tournament begins tomorrow and runs through mid-November, with single-elimination play between 9:00PM and 4:00AM. Weekly winners will net McPrizes totaling a few hundred dollars, including Best Buy and McDonald's gift certificates. They will also compete in the November 18 championship, where three players will win a thousand-dollar Best Buy gift certificate, Xbox 360, and more.Dallas and Ft. Worth gamers, represent Joystiq, and tell us how it goes. Just consider bringing gloves and/or bleach; those guitar controllers are going to be pretty McGreasy by the end.[Via: Adrants]
