Wii U eShop titles NES Remix and NES Remix 2 will be released at retail in a physical compilation called NES Remix Pack, Nintendo announced during its San Diego Comic-Con livestream. The two-for-one revisit of the NES library will arrive during this holiday season, though a price point was not mentioned. Though images were not shown during the announcement, it's possible NES Remix Pack will be comparable to Famicom Remix 1 + 2, which was released in Japan on April 24, as reported by Destructoid. Famicom Remix was priced at 2,858 yen at release, which converts to about $28 in US dollars. [Image: Nintendo]

Marking a change from the calendars, posters and other Nintendoodads, the 2014 Club Nintendo elite rewards for North America are all downloadable games. While that'll disappoint some of you, as a European I have to note on our side of the ocean it's all physical - and personally, not the most appealing selection either. So if you want to swap places... well, we can't, but you get the drift. As before, qualifying Platinum members can have their pick of one Gold or one Platinum gift, while Gold members have to make do with the golden selection. If I were so lucky, I'd pick one of Game & Wario, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Dr. Luigi and Earthbound from the Platinum games. On the Gold side, I'm totally in the mood for some Zelda 2. Sigh.

File this under "A Few Bad Apples Ruining The Bunch:" A time attack contest for NES Remix has been canceled due to players utilizing an exploit to decrease their times. The winner of the contest was set to have their run officially recorded by Nintendo, which obviously won't be happening. In a comment on one of the game's Miiverse posts, the game's director, Koichi Hayashida, apologized for the inconvenience and thanked players for their time. "In the interest of being as fair as possible, we decided to terminate the event without recognizing the fastest time," Hayashida wrote. "We sincerely apologize for this matter, particularly because the vast majority of people played fairly." The exploit seems to be related to repeatedly pausing the game, as there is a short delay between when gameplay resumes and the clock resumes. In other words: wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.

  • NES Remix review: Please rewind

The content of NES Remix feels like the sort of challenges players make up for themselves when they've cleared a game's traditional obstacles but still want to keep playing. This Wii U eShop game's focus isn't on telling a story or layering game mechanics over a linear set of levels – it's about making more tangible victories out of short-term goals that are comparable to self-assigned targets, like besting ten enemies without being hit or finishing a stage in a certain amount of time. Unfortunately, NES Remix pulls from an underwhelming pool of games and almost never pitches ideas that ascend above the creativity that players have been imposing on themselves for years.

NES Remix, a mashup encompassing elements from 16 NES games, will be made available today on the Wii U eShop for $14.99, Nintendo revealed during this morning's Nintendo Direct. The reveal trailer showed stages from Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and Ice Climber that weren't quite the same scenes we saw on the NES years ago. For example, Link was hopping over barrels in DK in place of Mario, while World 1-2 of SMB was mirrored and being played backwards.
