A 3D digital photo frame may seem a bit excessive for even the most all-compassing technology bandwagon, but the folks from Newsight have managed to put a somewhat unique spin on the idea with this frame recently on display at SID 2010. Like some of the company's other displays, this 3D LCD is auto-stereoscopic -- meaning you don't need any pesky glasses -- but it also takes things one step further by supporting what's known as "motion parallax," which effectively means you can "see around" an image. As you might expect, that involves a bit of trickery, but Newsight says its image processing software can take any traditional 3D (or even 2D) image and create five separate images out of it that let you see the same image from different angles. Unfortunately, that image processing must first be done on a PC with the current model, but Newsight promises that the next model will have built-in processing, and it's already talking about a third version that will let two frames send images to each other.

  • NewSight's 70-inch 3DTV keeps the glasses away with its parallax barrier tech

Last week's Finetech Japan 2010 expo allowed display manufacturers to show and tell each other about their latest innovations and advancements. One of the unquestioned highlights was NewSight's implementation of parallax barrier technology on displays up to 70 inches in size. The company is claiming its demo unit as the world's largest glasses-free 3D screen, but regrettably deprives us of any further details. All we're told is that the parallax barrier is "affixed to commercial-grade" LCDs, which suggests to us that perhaps the technique and hardware could be applied atop your favorite brand's existent 2D models. Of course, that'd only matter if these displays deliver a manifestly better picture and experience than what we have now, but it's looking like we'll have to wait a little bit longer to find out.

NewSight decided just removing the need for silly glasses wasn't good enough, showing off the first 3D LED-based display. Each LED is arranged at a pitch of 6mm, similar to current LCD 3D technology, so it can display the same content that's been popping up as of late. The 180-inch 3D LED Video Wall is capable of combining with three others to form a 360-inch screen, with a 20,000 hour warranty period on its LEDs and NewSight's digital signage background, we can imagine watching a game or being hounded by eerily-realistic Black Friday ads very soon.

Actually, I'll still have to wear glasses because my eyesight is so poor. I just won't have to wear 3D glasses. Newsight Corporation just demonstrated their real-time 3D HDTV images at the IFA show. No special glasses are required because of the method and technology used.Utilizing software processing, HD video streams are passed through a converter chip that creates eight stereo views on-the-fly. A proprietary filter is applied so that each of the eight views is projected in eight slightly different directions on an LCD monitor. The human eye detects the different scenes and perceives a three-dimensional view. According to Newsight, they intend to apply this technology to one of the 2006 World Cup events. I can just imagine people ducking from a soccer ball that will never hit them.
