It would make sense that Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge on Xbox would use Xbox Smartglass to add tablet features, since it's based on a Wii U game (that's based on an Xbox 360 and PS3 game.)However, the Smartglass features are different from the inventory and off-TV play features used on the Wii U. Playing with the SmartGlass app loaded up on your phone or tablet allows you to keep track of your gameplay statistics. It also allows you to load up videos on YouTube of other players clearing the area you're in, to help you make your way.Razor's Edge will be available April 2 in North America, and April 5 in Europe.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, Team Ninja's second and sharper stab at last year's Ryu Hayabusa outing, is to be Australia's first game classified as R18+.Australia's harsh video game restrictions have been criticized for years. The country passed a bill in June allowing the sale of video games targeted at players 15 years of age and older. As of January 1, 2013, these new laws allow for the sale of games like Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, making it the first adult video game to launch in Australia.

Keep track of all of Joystiq's Wii U launch coverage on our Wii U hub page! Team Ninja has always done better on the rebound, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge is a testament to this fact. The technical excellence of the 2004's Ninja Gaiden was one-upped in Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Ninja Gaiden 2 was improved dramatically in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Razor's Edge carries that trend forward into the series' latest entry, with surprising results. It's one thing to turn a great game into an even better one, but to turn a once-terrible game into a launch lineup highlight? Impossible!Apparently not. Team Ninja cuts liberally from Ninja Gaiden 3 in Razor's Edge, stripping away everything from the obnoxious "steel on bone" QTE-style button mashery to the multitude of joy-killing sequences in which players guide a stumbling, curse-afflicted Ryu through neutered enemy encounters. Even the questionable presentation is erased, exemplified by an early moment that forces Ryu, and thus the player, to murder a man in cold blood as he pleads for his life. This insufferable moment has been excised from Razor's Edge, and for that we can all be thankful.%Gallery-165268%

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge has a cameo from Ryu's apprentice Momiji. Nintendo announced the free character DLC will be available in the Wii U port sometime in December, unlocking the Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword heroine for use in Challenge and Ninja Trials modes.Momiji is the second playable character added to Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, joining Dead or Alive's pink-haired pugilist, Ayane. In addition to the extra characters, the Wii U port tosses in a new Challenge mode that lets you go through the campaign as any playable character, plus an online co-op mode for up to two players.

In addition to Ayane – and, of course, Ryu Hayabusa – Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge will have more playable characters following its November 18 launch on Wii U. According to a press release issued by Nintendo today, additional playable characters will be released sometime after launch as free DLC."More information about these characters will be revealed at a later time," so we can't yet tell you if they'll be from Dead or Alive, or if you'll blush when looking at them.

Tecmo Koei introduced Dead or Alive/Ninja Gaiden mainstay supporting character Ayana as playable in Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge for the Wii U, in the only way it knows how: by first showing her getting a massage in the nude, and then ruthlessly slaughtering dozens and dozens of men, as seen in the trailer above.Playing through the entire game as either ninja is possible thanks to a new Chapter Challenge mode. Ayane's exploits won't be entirely solo, however, as an online co-op mode starring both her and resident ninja Ryu Hayabusa has also been announced for the port, according to Siliconera.Razor's Edge will also see the return of dismemberment capabilities, which is important considering that dismemberment physics are to Ninja Gaiden as those other physics are to Dead or Alive.%Gallery-165268%

As part of its financial results, Tecmo shared plans for its upcoming titles. As discovered by Andriasang, of particular interest is the company's launch plan for Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge for Wii U, which is based on the Xbox 360/PS3 release. According to the presentation materials, Ryu Hayabusa's tablet-powered adventure will arrive alongside the Wii U launch, which is slated for sometime after April next year. We can't be certain but – dismemberment or no – we're fairly confident that it will be the most violent title ever to launch with a Nintendo console.

Though still presented under a working title, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge is one of the first third-party games to be announced for Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console. Fumihiko Yasuda, lead on Ninja Gaiden 3, told Joystiq that Razor's Edge would be based on next year's Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, but would offer some changes beyond the addition of a subtitle. "Ninja Gaiden 3 for PS3 and 360 is the base of the Wii U version," Yasuda said during an E3 meeting. "Of course, we understood that we would need to implement a particular gameplay experience with Wii U, so we are studying what we can do with that console. We're thinking of different modes and different combat action -- something different." While Team Ninja attempts to figure out the best, ultra-violent uses for Nintendo's controller-screen hybrid, it remains in the planning stages for a 3DS Ninja Gaiden game (announced at E3 2010). As it's so early in development, Yasuda could only suggest that it "may not be a sequel to Dragon Sword."
