  • Nokia's N97 unboxed on video -- somehow, someway

We always heard that where there is a will, there is a way. Said mantra has never been more exemplified than in the video past the break, as someone halfway across this great planet has seemingly procured what could be the very first shipping N97. Still, we'd like to point out a few things here: first, Nokia has yet to officially ship these things, so there's at least a sliver of a chance that by mashing play, you'll actually be watching a KIRF unboxing, and in turn, supporting terrorism. Also, we can't understand a word the unboxer says, so again, he could be explaining just how elaborate of a fake it is, and we'd never know. Needless to say, you should definitely proceed at your own risk.Update: Seems another fellow got one, and he's got pictures to prove it.

  • N97 disassembled on video... sort of

Are you dying to see Nokia's latest, the N97 ripped to shreds in glorious moving pictures? Well, that's too bad: we don't have that. What we do have, however, is a series of photographs of said shred-ripping, turned into a video. A creepy, silent film, if you will, complete with subtitles. Lack of movement and sound aside, it gives us a pretty great look at the innards of the handset, if that's what you're into. Sure, it's not The Goldrush, but if you want to see the N97 in a talkie, there's always that Royksopp video, right? Full video after the break.[Thanks, Mike]

  • Screen Grabs: Robyn cozies up to robot, Nokia N97 in Röyksopp video

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com. What's that? Robot companions and multiple dancing Robyns in the latest Röyksopp joint? We're there, dude. Oh, it gets better... somewhere in the 1:49 range the gadgetry gets ill when the flaxen-haired songstress whips out a Nokia N97 to text her robotic compatriots about the dance party happening up in her room. Yeah, an N97. It also makes a curtain-call appearance in the 2:48 realm, right before the blingee pregnancy test announces that Robyn is not, in fact, with child. Full, eye-opening video after the break.[Thanks, Derffy]

  • Nokia N97 NAM launching June 2nd?

The Nokia Blog's got it on good authority that the Finnish phone maker's giving its North America distributors the heads up to expect the N97 to arrive on June 2nd for $699, although that price might end up lower. We've been hearing an expected June launch for some time, so it's definitely not out of the question. This does, however, serve as both an exciting and somewhat painful reminder that, should a couple other rumors pan out, June's gonna be a busy month for smartphones. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Nokia's Ovi Store said to be launching with 20,000 'items,' unknown number of apps

The launch of the Ovi Store is just around the bend and, according to reports, Nokia is looking to blow things out a little better than Google, which launched its Android Market with a paltry 50 selections. Nokia is said to have over 20,000 "items" ready for download when things go live, a number that compares quite favorably to the 40,000 apps Apple currently offers through its App Store. However, what remains to be seen is exactly what an "item" is defined as. We're sure that count includes custom apps and WidSets, and there's talk about N-Gage games finding inclusion as well. However, video and music downloads seem to be counted and we'd guess ringtones too. So, how many actual applications will it have at launch? That remains to be seen.

  • Nokia throws up "pre-order soon" logo on US N97, drives the kids crazy

Thanks to the always revealing FCC, we knew good and well Nokia's painfully expensive N97 had Carolina (and probably the other states, to be fair) on its mind, but now we know the moment of truth is drawing near. As of right now, Nokia's US website has a teaser block informing us Yanks that we'll be able to pre-order this here smartphone "soon." Hitting the link only directs us the European legalese that we've digested before, but surely it'll lead to something meaningful in due time. Patience... it's a virtue.[Via phoneArena]

  • Keepin' it real fake, part CXCV: NOKLA N97 drops two i's, fools no one

Make no mistake, the Chinese-bound NOKLA N97 has neither Finnish origins nor any connection to a certain KIRF-friendly mobile OS. Specs include a large screen, an OK button, absolutely no slide-out keyboard, the words 'N97' in the top left corner, and an utter sense of despondency for those who actually pay money for this.[Via Daily Mobile]

  • Nokia's N97 spotted online, gets ugly price and date?

It seems eXpansys is on a roll with new sets, dates, and pricing as Nokia's flagship N97 device gets on the board for a mind numbing $1075. Sure, it has quad-band GSM, triple-band HSDPA, 32GB of storage, and just about every other bell and whistle imaginable, but that hurts. When it ships on the 23rd June -- that's IF it ships that day -- we're hoping the price will have wandered south a fair bit, because that'll hurt even with a carrier subsidy -- though, yeah, we know we'll still line up. Follow the read link to Ireland's eXpansys shop if you want to have a more detailed peek, shed a few tears, or something.[Thanks, Steven

  • Nokia irks UK carriers with decision to include Skype on N97

    by

Nokia made plenty of folks happy with its decision to include Skype on its new N97 handset, and future N-series devices, but it looks like the usual cadre of UK carriers aren't among them, and they're now making their displeasure quite clear. That includes O2 and Orange, who are apparently threatening to refuse stock of the N97 unless Nokia strips out the Skype client, a point they have reportedly made directly to Nokia in "high-level discussions." Another unnamed "operator source" was apparently even more blunt, saying that this is "another example of them trying to build an ecosystem that is all about Nokia and reduces the operator to a dumb pipe," adding that, "some people like 3 may be in a position where it could make sense to accept that. But if you spend upwards of £40m per year building your brand, you don't want to be just a dumb pipe do you?" For its part, Nokia seems to be staying mum on the matter for the time being, though it's tough to see a handset like the N97 just sitting on the shelf, so it seems like one party or the other will have to give sooner or later.[Via mocoNews.net]

  • Nokia's N97 gets sized up, felt up, and photographed

You know what they say -- another day, another hands-on look at the N97. Although the folks at Mobile Review insist that this is not a formal review, they have been kind enough to post their extensive thoughts on the phone -- as well as more UI and comparison shots than you can shake a stick at. Overall, they seem to really dig the handset's design: sure, it's big (a shade larger than the iPhone), but it's well-proportioned, and doesn't seem bulky. And even though it's a slider, it doesn't have that "wobbly" feeling that sliders tend to have. Other features of note include a secondary camera that can serve as webcam and the 3.5-inch, 640 x 360-pixel screen, boasting 16 million colors, which they call "a true marvel." But that's not all! Hit the read link for thoughts on the new, improved music player, all those widgets that you crave, and comparison shots with the HTC Touch Pro, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and the Apple iPhone. Video after the break.[Thanks, Imran]

  • Nokia prepping N97 "multimedia computer"?

    by
    Paul Miller

    11.17.2006

As much as we love to give Nokia crap for calling these S60 smartphones of theirs "multimedia computers," it's getting harder and harder to argue with the moniker. The purported specs on Nokia's upcoming N97, supposedly pictured above, include a 20GB HDD, "3D stereo speakers," 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and 2.4x optical zoom, 15fps video recording, a 3-inch screen, FM radio, miniSD, 400+ hour standby time, 4+ hour talk time and 24+ hour music playback. There's no real confirmation of all this, and the original source is in Hungarian -- always a shady sign -- but the truth is that it's really going to take specs like this to even register interest in light of its predecessor, the crazy-decked N95.[Via Electronista; thanks Jonathan]
