Tesla's latest smart power grid experiment begins in Canada

Tesla's experiments with smart power grids are headed further North. Canada's Nova Scotia Power recently finished setting up a pilot project that will use a combination of Tesla's Powerwall 2 home batteries and utility-grade Powerpack batteries to create a more reliable wind power system. The Elmsdale-based Intelligent Feeder Project fills gaps in the electrical grid by topping up the Powerpacks whenever a nearby wind turbine system generates excess power, and delivering that stored energy to local homes (including those with Powerwall 2 batteries) when there's an outage or the turbine system falls short.

China isn't the only region Apple is targeting for expansion in 2012. The company is also eyeing Canada. Now home to 22 retail stores, the North American country may be getting four new outlets in the upcoming year. According to allNovaScotia.com and ifoAppleStore, Apple may open a store next to Sears in the Halifax Shopping Center. Located in Nova Scotia, this store will become North America's easternmost location. The Halifax Shopping Center sounds like the perfect place for an Apple store. The mall was renovated in 2007, and has several big-name retailers. There's also a lot of people in Nova Scotia (over 900,000 residents) and very few nearby Apple stores. The next closest Apple retail store is the Maine Mall store, which is located over 300 geodesic miles (500+ road miles) away in the US. [Via ifoApplsStore]

  • Submerged camera holds functional memory card two years after accident

After capsizing in the partially frozen waters at Kejimkujik National Park, the Collins family was far too busy being alive to worry over a silly sunken camera. As fate would have it, the ole Canon Powershot that was lost eventually turned up, as a park maintenance worker managed to spot the device sitting aimlessly upon a rock. Granted, the body was in fairly deplorable shape after braving the elements for two solid years, but the memory card tucked within seemed to be relatively unharmed. Upon testing it out, the employee found some 300 pictures taken on the day in which Mr. & Mrs. Collins nearly perished, and apparently, the card was still in tact enough to be read. Eventually, the couple managed to pick up the camera / card and bring home those slightly eerie memories, but no one ever found the loner who snapped up the couple's misplaced cellphone and ran up calls to Zimbabwe 'til the battery died.[Via FarEastGizmos]
