Mighty Rocket Studio, the renamed Hydravision Entertainment that developed survival-horror games ObsCure and ObsCure 2, has announced plans to bring the series to Steam. Fresh trailers for both games have appeared on the studio's YouTube page, which supplement a tweet about their plans to offer the games in the "beginning of March." The games begin by following a group of highschoolers as they search for a missing friend, which quickly turns into a fight to survive in a science-fiction horror setting. A spore-like substance causes people to mutate into monsters, supplying plenty of enemies for the protagonists. Nightmarish mutants follow the group into their college years in ObsCure 2, proving that even if you survive a terrible, movie-worthy disaster, your days are probably still numbered. Platforms weren't specified in the announcement, but we won't have to wait too long before the games are released. The ObsCure series was also translated into a sidescrolling brawler last year called Final Exam, which was less about horror and more about blasting everything that moves into a bloody mess. • Final Exam co-op trailer lacks actual exams, shows off monster-bashing with friends instead

You know, I don't think the characters in Final Exam, formerly known as Obscure, know much about exams. I mean, here's this new trailer showing off co-op for the game, and instead of having study group and pulling all-nighters together, they're shooting rocket launchers, turning an amusement park ride into a death-mobile, and connecting with up to three friends for online monster-slaying. That's cool and all guys, but I don't think it's gonna get you on the Dean's List. Along with the new co-op trailer, Final Exam developer Mighty Rocket Studio has announced that the game is available on Steam Early Access, where pre-purchasers can play the first chapter ahead of release. The Final Exam Steam page lists a full release date of November 5, while the game's official site says it will be coming to XBLA and PSN "early November."

Final Exam, formerly Obscure, will bring its mix of survival horror and 2D co-op action to the Xbox 360 Games Store, PlayStation Network, and PC on November 8. Final Exam is tied to Hydravision's perhaps ironically named Obscure horror series, developer Mighty Rocket Studio formed from the French team's ashes. Mighty Rocket promises "many allusions" to the Obscure series in Final Exam, despite the switch to sidescrolling brawling. Final Exam was first expected back in the spring, so hopefully the extra development time translates into a stronger game. The trailer suggests some promise, at least, and as long as Final Exam applies itself well in the coming months, it may well make the grade.

Do you remember ObsCure? The survival horror game series by Hydravision has become somewhat self-referential, as it has become rather obscure itself in the years since its multiplatform release. Now this game you may not remember is becoming into a sidescrolling action game, one "drenched in the blood and caustic humor inspired by the teen and horror movie genres," according to publisher Focus Home Interactive. The new Obscure is coming to PSN, PC, and Xbox in the spring.Developer Mighty Rocket Studios includes staff from Hydravision, adapting its old franchise into a brawler with non-linear levels and RPG elements. Players control a group of students, each with their own abilities that compliment each other in local or online co-op.%Gallery-178237%

Despite its name, Playlogic is doing it best to ensure that its teen survival horror caper, Obscure: The Aftermath, is anything but hard to find. The publisher announced that in addition to the game's previously mentioned UMD release in September, the company will also release the Obscure sequel for download on the PSP Go this fall. A version for play on toaster ovens and other household appliances is also rumored to be in the works, though Playlogic representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Horror is difficult to get across on a portable. After all, if things get too unnerving, you simply toss the system aside and breathe easy. That said, Playlogic is the latest to try its hand at fright on the go, announcing plans to again port Obscure: The Aftermath to yet another platform -- the PSP.Set to ship in North America this September, the sequel to 2005's Obscure looks to offer much of the same B-movie shock value as it has on other platforms, just on a smaller screen. Still, our previous time with the teen horror romp was more annoying than scary, and we doubt being able to play it while waiting for the bus will be enough to make our hair stand on end.[Thanks, David]

  • Wii Fanboy Review: Obscure: The Aftermath

Most games sound good; after all, someone, somewhere, has to approve them and throw money into the development process, and on paper, Obscure: The Aftermath sounds great. In practice, however, what could have been a fantastic addition to the Wii library simply falls flat due to far too many technical issues.Obscure: The Aftermath is a video game take on teen horror films. As the follow-up to 2005's Obscure, the sequel picks up with many of the same characters after they've survived a nightmarish experience at the hands of crazed high school teachers. Now the main cast of characters is older, supposedly wiser, and living it up at a local college ... until things turn bad, as they so often seem to do when you're young, attractive, and in a horror scenario.%Gallery-19641%

  • Obscure: The Aftermath trailer is like a B movie

We love survival horror (especially on our Wiis), but after watching this trailer, it's hard to be excited in any way for Obscure: The Aftermath. It looks like a cheesy horror film, though with none of the charm (or Bruce Campbell) that makes such movies worth watching. Not only did were we completely lost while watching this video (the plot, clearly, is also obscure), but it just looked silly. Do we have another Escape from Bug Island on our hands? Perhaps not, since the first game was supposedly enjoyable, and there's also the budget price of $30 to consider. If that's enough to convince you to at least give this game a look, it's set to release next week in North America.*Note: This video is from the PC version of the game.

In speaking with Obscure II's producer Jesse America, Cubed3 brought up the idea of bringing the game to the DS. Why not, right? Everyone else is doing it and the DS is the mackdaddy of cash cows, so we can definitely understand why they would want to bring the game to that platform. And, they just might. Jesse stating "we are seriously considering this, and I have written down some ideas and designs, but it would be an entirely new game." She further praises the handheld by stating "I think that the DS is an extremely interesting piece of hardware, and I wouldn't mind seeing what we could come up with. I have been very much inspired by Hotel Dusk I must say. So who knows?"We're inspired by Hotel Dusk also! We must be long-lost siblings!

CVG recently posted a pair of trailers for the upcoming Obscure II. These trailers are for the PC version of the game, so the graphics could be different on the Wii, but the gameplay should translate over relatively unchanged. And, based on these new trailers, the game is going to be fairly action-packed and dark. Like the last trailer we showcased, it provides a glimpse at some co-op fun in the game.

When we first reported on the sequel coming to the Wii later this year, we found ourselves lacking enthusiasm. After seeing a trailer of the game in action, we can't say we're excited at all for the game. It looks like a lot of the same mundane stuff that comprised the first title. Maybe you don't feel the same way? Oh well, at least the music kind of rocks.Check out the video past the post break.

  • Obscure II set to scare up some action on the Wii this year

We actually played the first Obscure game and the similarities between it and the teen horror flicks of the late 90's (The Faculty, Disturbing Behavior) were all well and good, just the game itself wasn't very fun. Nor was it very good. Regardless, we're getting a sequel to the game in Q4 of this year.Still, the news of the franchise seeing a sequel on the Wii manages to excite us just a little. We are survival-horror fans by nature, even if it is "whiny-teen survival horror," so the prospect of attacking enemies and navigating a dangerous environment with the Wiimote and nunchuk is a welcome one. We'll just have to wait until we see more before passing judgment ...
