Netflix has remained relatively tight-lipped about what the sixth season of Orange is the New Black would entail. It's opening up now that the new season's trailer has arrived, though... and it's evident that tension is the order of the day. The series has the women of Litchfield Penitentiary moving to a maximum security prison following the riot in season five, and they not only have to grapple with the realities of their new locale (including scary inmates and cruel guards), but each other. For instance, they're facing charges in the wake of the riot -- do they turn on each other out of self-preservation, or stick together?

House of Cards isn't the only show Netflix is soon bringing back for a new season. The streaming service revealed today that another one of its hit originals, Orange is the New Black, will be premiering its fifth season on June 9th. Last year, Netflix said the series created by Jenji Kohan would be around for quite a while, after announcing it had been renewed for three more seasons (five, six and seven).

When Netflix isn't commissioning award-winning programming and movies, some members of its team dedicate some of their time to building fun little projects. We've already The Switch, a Netflix and Chill button that can automatically dim the lights, activate your phone's Do Not Disturb feature and prepare Netflix for the streaming ahead, but its latest proposition isn't about watching what it has to offer, it's all about gaming. Netflix Infinite Runner, as the name suggests, is an endless running game that features the most popular characters from four popular original shows: Narcos, Marco Polo, Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things.

Netflix just announced it is bringing back Orange is the New Black for a 5th, 6th and 7th season. The streaming service's original series, created by Jenji Kohan (Weeds) and produced by Lionsgate, has been a hit since it debuted in 2013. With many award nominations during its first three seasons, including for Golden Globes and Emmys, the decision from Netflix to continue renewing the show isn't a surprise.

Netflix is flying high enough to need a 7-for-1 stock split, but now it's competing in a world where Showtime and HBO offer streaming video over the internet too. That makes today's earnings results (PDF) ever more important, and not surprisingly, the company focused on its push for original, exclusive content. Now up to 65 million members worldwide (42 million in the US), Netflix mentioned that the debut of Orange is the New Black S3 resulted in viewers watching a record number of hours for one day the following Sunday, the same day as HBO's Game of Thrones finale and an NBA Finals game.

  • Netflix pushes 'OITNB' release six hours early during primetime

We were expecting season three of Orange is the New Black to become available for streaming at about 3AM ET tonight, but Netflix surprised everyone and released it at about 9PM. That was during its "OrangeCon" event in New York City for fans, but really raises an interesting question. What if Netflix bumps its all-at-once original series releases from those early morning hours to right in the middle of primetime? There's not much on tonight other than the NBA playoffs, but pulling such a stunt in the think of the fall TV season could be an interesting experiment -- if Netflix ever does it again.

Sure, Netflix's first Marvel superhero series Daredevil premieres in just a few hours, but it has more on the way. Season three of Orange is the New Black is coming up June 12th, as well as a new series Grace and Frankie starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda May 8th -- check the trailers for both after the break. The blessing and the curse that is binge watching means each new series drop may only be satisfying for a couple of days (or just one long night), but the streaming service still has quite a packed lineup.

Even if you're slow-burning instead of binging on House of Cards, you'll still need a few backups once you're through with Frank & Claire Underwood's world domination tour. Netflix has revealed release dates for most of its summer (winter in Australia) programming, ready to keep you inside where the AC is cool and the WiFi signal is strong. Of course, you can also check out the spring shows here, and if you need something this week there's Aziz Ansari and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Sense8, its sci-fi collaboration with the Wachowskis will hit streaming on June 5th, a week before Orange is the New Black season three and a month before its Wet Hot American Summer revival arrives July 17th. Also worth keeping an eye out for are the Nina Simone documentary on June 26th, and Canadian sci-fi thriller Between coming at some point in May. Check for the full list after the break, and update your calendars accordingly.

  • 'Orange Is The New Black' season two is ready for streaming on Netflix

House of Cards is often recognized as Netflix's flagship original, but there's another award-winning show that's returning for a second season: Orange Is The New Black. Piper Chapman's prison-based predicament is back for another 13-episode sentence after we last saw her rearranging the face of another inmate. We already know that Laura Prepon won't return as a regular on the show, but Danielle Brooks (Taystee) and Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky) will, suggesting that our main protagonist showed some restraint in the first season's finale. Orange is now Netflix's most-viewed show (although the company doesn't share numbers) and chances are it will enjoy even more success this time around. The streaming giant has already ordered a third season, so go and binge-watch safe in the knowledge that it'll almost certainly return next year.

Curious to watch all of the grisly deaths in Breaking Bad, but in a higher resolution? You've only got a month or so to wait, as Netflix has confirmed that it'll begin streaming the show in 4K and Dolby 5.1 at some point in June. The company also affirmed its commitment to screening all of its original shows in 4K, and is also currently experimenting with DVD-style extras. At present, tests are being carried out on Behind the Bars, a series of branching interviews with the cast of Orange is the New Black which will could in and out of the episodes when required. That said, the feature may not be ready for our second trip to federal prison, which begins on June 6th.

  • Orange is the New Black trailer promises a 'next level crazy' season two

House of Cards is probably Netflix's most-discussed original series, but fans of Orange is the New Black would argue it matches Frank Underwood & Co. in both deviousness and quality. As usual, the entire second season will premiere at once on June 6th, and it should be an even wilder ride than the first time around, as shown in this trailer (embedded after the break). The gang is back, including Piper, her ex Alex Vause played by Laura Prepon, Crazy Eyes, Pennsatucky and all the rest. Netflix isn't the only service or channel investing in original content to set itself apart, but over the last year or so it's been one of the most consistently successful, and with new additions like Sense8 and Marco Polo coming soon, those trying to catch up will face a tough job in prying any of its 30 million+ customers loose.

Should you fancy Piper Chapman's prison-based predicament more than Frank Underwood's political conniving, you're in luck. The second season of Orange is the New Black will hit Netflix on June 6th -- less than a year after the series debuted. As The Hollywood Reporter tells it, Laura Prepon won't return as a regular on the show, but Danielle Brooks (Taystee) and Taryn Manning (Pennsatucky) will. The latter of which should be a clue that Chapman showed at least some restraint during the first season's closing moments. Of course, if you've made it through House of Cards' second season, you're already privy to this info as there's a poster after the season finale. We've embedded a teaser trailer after the break if you're jonesin' for a peek at Crazy Eyes' ... well, crazy eyes.

  • Netflix renews 'Orange is the New Black' for season two, before season one launches

Netflix is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to building a library of first-run content, tonight announcing it's signed up new series Orange is the New Black for a second season, set for release in 2014. That's particularly notable because unlike Hemlock Grove's renewal last week, this series hasn't even been posted to the streaming site yet. It's not the company's first bold move however, as it signed up for two seasons of House of Cards without seeing anything first, but that had David Fincher and Kevin Spacey attached. This new show is written by Weeds creator Jenji Kohan and follows a woman from Brooklyn sentenced to 15 months in federal prison -- season one debuts July 11th.
