Remember the new Ong-Bak game from Studio Hive? We learned back in January that Hive was collaborating with the production studio behind the Ong-Bak movies. As it turns out, the studio is working with Ong-Bak director and choreographer Panna Rittikrai, and the game even features the likeness of star Tony Jaa.The result can be seen in the trailer for Ong-Bak Tri: The Game above. It ... uh .... it doesn't look quite as grand as the films that inspired it. The game is slated to arrive on PC, iOS, Android and consoles this winter.

A prequel to 2010's straight-to-video/Netflix Tekken film has been announced by Crystal Sky Pictures CEO Steven Paul during this week's Cannes Film Festival in France. Tekken: Rise of the Tournament is set to be directed by Prachya Pinkaew of Ong-bak and Chocolate fame – a martial arts pedigree that bodes better for the franchise than Tekken director Dwight H. Little's resume of slasher flicks and Free Willy sequels. No actors have been signed to the project as of yet, but Crystal Sky will be aiming at finding thespians that look like Tekken's characters, rather than attaching big-name stars. The production company will be aiming for a theatrical release in North America, although nothing has actually been decided in terms of distribution. In addition to Tekken: Rise of the Tournament, Crystal Sky Pictures is in the post-production stages of a Baby Geniuses trilogy and is also set to begin production on Dracula: The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Can't make this stuff up.

Tony Jaa's Ong-Bak universe is being turned into a multiplatform game by Studio Hive, a Thailand-based computer-illustration studio turned game developer. That is, it will be a game developer once it's developed this title -- for now Studio Hive produces art for the entertainment industry and has worked with Square Enix on Front Mission Evolved, and while its illustrations are gorgeous, this marks Hive's first foray into development. Studio Hive said it will collaborate with Sahamongkol Film International, the production company behind the Ong-Bak movies, to "achieve a much deeper story involvement for all Ong-Bak fans." Hive predicts a 2012 release, which may introduce it to a staple of the video game industry it hasn't yet experienced -- the delay.

  • The Soloist: Why I do it

After this post, I had it in mind to think through why I prefer to solo, and whether the reasons why are valid ones, given that I'm playing in a genre meant to provide a social experience. I'm going to try to list as many reasons as I can think of in favor of grouping and playing with buddies, and provide a counter-argument if I can. Bear in mind, this is not me telling you that you should go solo; this is just me trying to 1) explain why I do it, and 2) understand for myself whether my reasons hold water.Enough said; excelsior!
