  • Moto X's Open Mic demoed, enables voice command when screen is off (video)

Just when we're getting bored of all these static Moto X leaks, a couple of new video clips popped up to finally show off some of the software goodies. The first one appears to be a leaked Rogers promotional video (embedded after the break), in which a nice lady introduces us to a new Google Now voice command feature, which can be toggled with a custom phrase even when the screen is off (similar to a feature we've seen promised by a certain Wolfson audio chip). According to another clip uploaded by kronikbudz, said feature is called Open Mic, but there's no indication as to whether this will be exclusive to Motorola devices or whether it'll come with the next Android release. The Rogers video adds that the Moto X will provide ambient "active updates" notifications on the screen when the phone is locked, and this is pitched as a more sensible replacement for the meaningless blinking light. Later on, the same lady demonstrates how one can activate the phone's camera -- even when locked -- by simply twisting the wrist twice. We're a bit worried that this may allow accidental activations, unless the phone can detect whether it is inside a pocket or bag. Finally, the lady says the Moto X will be "exclusively" heading to Rogers this August in either black or white, thus confirming the "late Summer" window that we were previously told. Enjoy your very own exclusivity while it lasts, Mr. Schmidt! [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Today on TUAW TV Live I'm hoping that a lot of our chat room regulars have decided they want to join in on the show through Skype. If you're getting ready to each today's show and didn't see the earlier promo post, you can ask to be included on our special "open mic" episode of the show by sending an email to me at tuawsteve at gmail dot com with your Skype handle. I'll try to get everyone who asks onto the show for a few minutes, where you can ask questions, give answers, or just state your opinion on Apple-related topics. Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream App. It's a universal app and is wonderful on an iPad, both for viewing and participating in the chat. We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. For those of you who are not able to join us for the live edition, you'll be able to view it later this evening on our TUAW Video YouTube channel and as part of the TUAW TV Live podcast viewable in iTunes or on any of your Apple devices.

I was hoping to have a very special guest on TUAW TV Live today, but that fell through... What that means, since I'm not really up for blathering by myself for a full hour, is that we're going to have an open mic day on the show. If you'd like to state an opinion, make a fool of yourself, talk about the iPhone 6S, recite bad poetry about Steve Jobs, complain about your hot iPad, or plug a new app that you wrote last night in your sleep, send me your Skype handle (tuawsteve at gmail dot com) ASAP and I'll get you scheduled for a quick chat (no more than ten minutes) on the show. As usual, I'll be starting the show at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT / 10 PM BST) sharp, and we'll take a few minutes to chat before the demos start. To join in on the chat and watch the live streaming video, drop by TUAW about five minutes before the start time to get your instructions on how to participate. If you're unable to join us for the show, remember that you can always subscribe to the video podcast and watch the show at your leisure in iTunes or any other favorite podcatching app. The past shows are also available on the TUAW YouTube channel. The chat is now available as well on IRC: join us on server chat1.ustream.tv, chat room #tuaw-tv.

  • TUAW TV Live: Open mics on the last day of November

Did this month just fly by or what? Just 35 days ago I was doing a live review of the "new" iPhone 4S, and now all of us are used to talking to Siri. It's also hard to believe that in just a few weeks, TUAW TV Live marks its second anniversary of weekly idiocy. Time flies, and so will today's show as I open the microphones to TUAW TV Live regulars. I'll provide my Skype address to folks in the chat room, and if you'd like to pontificate about a topic for 5 - 10 minutes, you'll have the chance. Just keep it on topic -- i.e., Apple-related -- and you'll be fine! Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! I usually have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to talk about on TUAW TV Live every week, but while planning for this post-Cyber Monday episode I just drew a blank. That means that it's a perfect time to open up the virtual microphones and hear what viewers have to say. I've got a few topics to cover at the beginning of the show, and then I'll open up my Skype for calls. Want to talk about the chances for an Apple-branded smart TV? Are you dreaming of what an iPad 3 could be like? It's your chance to spout your crazy ideas and see what the rest of the chat room has to say about 'em. As usual, I'll be starting the show at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT / 10 PM BST) sharp, and we'll take a few minutes to chat before we get started. To join in on the chat and watch the live streaming video, drop by TUAW about five minutes before the start time to get your instructions on how to participate.
