  • Ori and the Blind Forest lights up Xbox One & PC this March

Ori and the Blind Forest is set to mix beauty with beastly platforming when it hits Xbox One and PC on March 11. Moon Studios' side-scroller is priced $20 on both platforms. Ori caught the eye last year with its picturesque look, comparable to the UbiArt engine as seen in the watercolor-like Child of Light. What also caught Richard Mitchell's eye in our preview was the speedy, precise platforming. According to the developer, Ori's agile, fluid movement was inspired by Super Meat Boy - when we say fluid, we don't mean the red kind. Ori is a less gruesome, more spiritual affair then Team Meat's offering, but its air-dash combos and wall-to-wall platforming tricks look like they require some dexterity.

Bad news for fans of the lovely and ethereal, as developer Moon Studios has revealed that Xbox One and PC platformer Ori and the Blind Forest will not make its previously-announced pre-holiday launch window. "While we're extremely excited for all of you to get your hands on Ori and the Blind Forest as soon as possible, we made the decision together with our partners at Microsoft Studios that we'll need just a little more time in order to add a final layer of polish to - what we hope - will be an unforgettable gaming experience," reads a notice posted by the developers. While Moon Studios does not have a specific date in mind, it is now aiming to launch Ori and the Blind Forest at some point in "early 2015." [Image: Microsoft]

When Moon Studios began creating Ori and the Blind Forest, founder and CEO Thomas Mahler tells me, the team set out to make a game that recalled the early 90s era of Nintendo. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is his favorite game, says Mahler, though Ori owes a lot more to Super Metroid. The beautiful, heart-wrenching trailer Microsoft showed during its E3 2014 media briefing (embedded below) only hints at Ori's overarching, exploration-driven structure. Like Metroid and other platform adventure games, Ori has players leaping across pits and doing battle with evil creatures, all while slowly accruing new abilities that allow the game's titular, rabbit-like protagonist to reach new areas. What sets it apart from similar games, however, is its sense of speed and precision, which Mahler says was inspired by something a little more recent: Super Meat Boy.

Though developer Moon Studios offered no solid details on the upcoming Ori And The Blind Forest, the cinematic shown during Microsoft's E3 conference offered a tantalizing glimpse of a very attractive 2D art style complemented by fluid, almost Ghibli-esque animation.
