Samsung readies premium laptops for US soup lines
We've been fans of Samsung laptops ever since we laid hands (and personal cash) on the ultra-portable Q30 resold by Dell as the X1. As such, Sammy has our full attention after announcing proper plans to enter the US market with five different Samsung-branded laptop models. Slated for sale at US big box and the usual brick-and-mortarless on-line shops are the 10-inch NC10, the 13.3-inch Q310 and X360, 14-inch X460 and P460, 15.4-inch P560, and 16-inch R610 slab with 16:9 aspect -- a silicon feast spread across thin and light, all purpose, business, desktop replacement, and netbook tastes. We're talking premium rigs here folks, a bold move with very questionable timing given the sudden shortage of discretionary capital held by the average Dusty McSixpack. ASUS moving forward on ZX1 cancellation, adding two other phones?
CNET Asia has apparently received word that not only will ASUS' Lamborghini-branded ZX1 smartphone be canceled (as we mentioned earlier this month), but the company will also be putting the brakes on its forthcoming P560 and M536 phones as well. In a statement issued presumably to CNET, the company claims that the project has been postponed due to the "technical immaturity of a key component from one of our suppliers," though they seem to have left the door open for a reboot. We know one thing for sure -- it's clear that the P560 and M536 weren't those "more important devices" the company made reference to previously. They probably need the resources for another 25 versions of the Eee PC.[Thanks, chauco]
Centrino 2 laptop parade continues as Samsung throws out a few
It's almost over folks -- at least, that's what we're continuing to tell ourselves. Anyways, Sammy has decided to follow in the footsteps of practically everyone else in the laptop realm by revealing a few newcomers over in South Korea. Granted, we already knew that a few of these were coming, but now we've got actual units with Photoshopped screen savers to prove their existence. Ready? Let's go. We've got the Centrino 2-based 12.1-inch Q210, 13.1-inch Q310, 14.1-inch R460, 15.4-inch R510 / R560 and 17-inch R710 on the consumer side, while the P210, P460, P461, P510 and P560 make up the business crowd. ASUS P560 sports Windows Mobile 6.1, many acronyms
Buried underneath the hoopla surrounding the announcement of ASUS' Lamborghini-branded ZX1 at CeBIT, the more mellow P560 was also announced, featuring pretty much every spec the average WinMo buyer could want these days in a package that speaks far, far less about the car you're driving (or wish you were driving, anyway). HSDPA, WiFi, 3.2 megapixel autofocus cam, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, GPS, microSDHC slot, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, and Microsoft's freshest build of Windows Mobile Professional -- 6.1, that is -- all have managed to find their way into the P560's unassuming shell. Not bad, though the €500 (about $772) price tag could scare a few folks away when it launches next month.[Via Navigadget]
Mio announces 4 GPS units: the P360, P560, C620, and C230
It sure took 'em awhile but the Mio P360 and P560 GPS / WinMo 6 PDAs jobbies have been announced for IFA. They've even got few friends: the 4.3-inch C620 (and C620t with TMC traffic receiver) pictured above and C230 chubster. Judging by the machine translated text, we expect all five to sport the same 400MHz processor and SiRFstar III GPS receiver. We'll update you with more as it rolls in. Mio prepping P360, P560 PDA / GPS units
It looks like Mio has a couple of new GPS-heavy PDAs in the works, with its new P360 and P560 models apparently set to replace the company's previous P350 and P550 units. While complete specs are still a little light, the biggest news here appears to be the addition of WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0, both of which were sorely lacking on the previous models. Otherwise, the devices have a slightly more streamlined design than before, along with an SD/MMC slot for expansion, a built-in microphone, and an embedded GPS antenna, with Windows Mobile 6 serving as the operating system. No word on pricing or availability, though the previous gen models started at €269 (or $366 at the current exchange rate).
