Hopefully even a brief Netflix outage didn't stop your Luke Cage binge or get in the way of catching the HBO premiere of Westworld, but this week the focus is on Blu-ray. A slew of Ultra HD Blu-ray releases are here including X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: First Class and The Great Gatsby. I'm actually most excited about seeing Pacific Rim on UHD Blu-ray, so I can compare it to the Dolby Vision HDR stream available from Vudu (and of course, bask in the glory of robots punching giant monsters). For Prince fans, Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge and Under the Cherry Moon are all being released on Blu-ray this week, while filmmaker Ava Duvernay takes a look at how our prison system has developed with her Netflix documentary The 13th. On TV, Scorpion is back, in case you thought Mr. Robot's hacking scenes were just too accurate, while CW has premieres of The Flash and Arrow as well as its new time travel-ish show Frequency. Finally, on HBO it's time for the premiere episode of a new series from YouTube star Issa Rae (Awkward Black Girl) called Insecure, but HBO subscribers can actually watch it early here. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

We doubt it can reach the amazing things continually being sighted along the Mariana Trench, but it's fun to dream. People at the Science Museum in London are trying to rebuild the first British robot. And this happened a month ago but we just discovered it and can't stop talking about it: Pigeons in London were sent on test flights to collect pollution stats in their tiny air quality smart vests. Please take in the splendor of this image and share with every animal freak you know. If you're into art, you might appreciate these modern pop-up books. • Pilot one of the robots from 'Pacific Rim' with Oculus Rift at Comic-Con

We're not sure how many of the new Oculus Rift VR kits have shipped out to developers already, but it looks like a healthy amount are in San Diego right now. That's where Comic-Con is happening this week and, following the X-Men VR demo we already heard about, Legendary Pictures and Oculus have teamed up for Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot. It lets attendees take control of the 250-foot tall Jaeger "Gipsy Danger" (no drift connection necessary) and do battle in a virtual reality combat simulator against the kaiju Knifehead (the first one you see in the movie). The whole experience is built in Unreal Engine 4 using the same assets Industrial Light & Magic worked with for the movie. Sure, you've seen the movie, and maybe even in IMAX 3D, but we're pretty sure even Guillermo del Toro's directing tricks can't add up to feeling like you're there, fighting an 8,700 ton monster off the coast of Alaska. It's all in Legendary's booth #3920 for all four days the show is open, from Thursday through Sunday. Don't have a ticket? There's a video preview embedded after the break, but it can't compare to diving into a VR world with Oculus -- maybe we'll be able to enjoy it at home by April 2017 when Pacific Rim 2 arrives.

Pacific Rim is finally coming home on Blu-ray and in 3D, complete with a special effects showcase ready to give your A/V system a proper workout. Directed by Guillermo del Toro it's visually one of the most impressive movies we've ever seen, and is accompanied this week by the release of Weird Science and Orson Welles' The Stranger. Otherwise, Netflix makes a dip into stand-up comedy with a new series and special from Russell Peters available for streaming, while the MLB playoffs rage on with the AL and NL championship series. Look after the break for our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and gaming.

  • Halfbrick wants to watch it all burn with Colossatron: Massive World Threat

The makers of Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja want you to destroy the planet. From the halls of the first annual PAX Australia comes Colossatron: Massive World Threat. Sure, the game's whole mass-destruction-via-aliens concept sounds a lot like Rampage, but as the announcement trailer shows, it's oh so much more. Players take control of a modular robotic snake, using all manner of upgradeable weapons and abilities to wreak wanton top-down chaos on an unsuspecting populace. The goal? Causing as much property damage as possible. Think of it as a modern take on Godzilla with a campy anime slant and you're mostly there. The Queensland, Australia developer's latest will be playable at its booth for the duration of the show. Can't make it to the expo? Skip past the break for the debut video.

  • Pacific Rim tries out the Super Ticket theater + digital download combo in Canada

In June, Paramount and Regal Theaters tried out a $50 "Mega Ticket" promotion for World War Z, and this month Warner Bros. is testing out a similar package in Canada for Pacific Rim. Available at Cineplex theaters, it lets moviegoers pre-buy a digital Ultraviolet copy of the movie for $19.99 ($24.99 in HD) that's promised to arrive before anyone else can get it, plus 725 points for its loyalty program and some exclusive extra content, all viewable on the CineplexStore website. Unlike the WWZ promo this doesn't include an early screenings before the movie's July 12th release, but it does mean any ticket can be upgraded to the "Super Ticket" package. That the flick was shot in Toronto probably has a lot to do with the location for the offer, although it's hard to say what's needed to convince viewers to check out an action movie already getting glowing reviews from Hideo Kojima and Kanye West. Of course we'll miss the MegaTicket's included small popcorn ($75 value!), but this could be getting closer to a decent proposition -- what price would convince you to combine your movie ticket / home video copy in one purchase?

  • Pacific Rim Technologies' iPod-ready JukeBox Station

Okay, so you're terrified to even leave your own home with your iPod, let alone take it on a stroll downtown, which leaves you with a portable media player that's stuck in the house, right? If this is you, fret not -- Pacific Rim Technologies has crafted the ultimate in-home (or bar, gameroom, café, etc.) accessory for your little Apple with the iPod-ready JukeBox Station. Standing a full one meter tall and weighing in at 55 pounds, this 72 watt sound system could technically be lumped in as just another speaker station that's "made for iPod," especially considering the built-in dock connector and included adapters to suit every dock-rocking iPod ever produced. But alas, this device demands a bit more respect than the little guys; this beast has 5 drivers, including a 6-inch subwoofer, 2 mid-range speakers, and 2 tweeters, an LED lighting system to add that oh-so-familiar jukebox ambiance, "17 function IR remote," RCA / 3.5mm inputs for alternate DAPs, video-out, and even a lockable window to ensure the tunes don't come to an abrupt stop care of a desperate party-goer. While we doubt the overall quality here will be anything above average (it'll be sold through Target, which isn't exactly known for its high-fidelity offerings), we doubt the signal-to-noise ratio is the focal point here, and though this jukebox isn't coin-operated, it'll cost you $699 -- or 2,796 quarters -- when it drops in October.[Via iLounge]
