Sega Saturn classic 'Panzer Dragoon' is getting the VR treatment

Well, that was unexpected. Out of nowhere, a relatively unknown game developer has announced a VR version of Panzer Dragoon, a beloved rail shooter franchise that started on the Sega Saturn in the mid-1990s. Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record will be a single-player experience that covers various episodes (the series' term for stages) from the original Saturn trilogy, according to a press release. Unsurprisingly, the game will use a first-person perspective, rather than the classic third-person view, and turn the player's VR controller into a handgun. There's no word on when it will come out, though, beyond "2020," or which platforms will be supported.

The Switch needs more Saturn games like ‘Panzer Dragoon’

If you love the Sega Genesis (or the Mega Drive, depending on where you live), there are countless ways to get your 16-bit fix. You can boot up a modern compilation, play them for free on your smartphone, or, soon, buy an adorable microconsole that plugs straight into your HDMI-equipped TV. The Sega Saturn, though? That's a trickier proposition. A smattering of games have been re-released on PC and Xbox. The vast majority of the console's library, however, is inaccessible unless you own the original hardware or want to dive into the legally murky world of emulation.

Microsoft has announced that Crimson Dragon, a planned XBLA Kinect title from Yukio Futatsugi, the creator of Panzer Dragoon, will release as an exclusive on Xbox One. The company showed a quick video of the game during today's press conference, and it looks very similar to the original build, with dragon-riding, Kinect-controlled shooter gameplay. Stay tuned for more, including a release date, when we hear it.%Gallery-191150%

  • Xbox Live Indie Game 'Leucistic Wyvern' looks familiar

Can't remember the name Leucistic Wyvern? Try "that one Xbox Live Indie Game that looks suspiciously like Panzer Dragoon." Mukagosoftware Development's XBLIG rail shooter is reminiscent of Sega's classic not only in that it's about a dragon shooting multiple types of projectiles as it flies across the countryside -- but also in that it looks like a Saturn game. The low-budget visuals (a staple of Mukagosoftware games; see Blaster and Morion and Sizonphase) result in savings that are passed on to the player. Leucistic Wyvern sells for just 80 Microsoft Points ($1). Check out a charmingly low-quality trailer (made by pointing a camera at a TV) after the break.

  • Project Draco 'inspired by' Panzer Dragoon, not a Panzer Dragoon game

Despite looking like Panzer Dragoon, being developed by Panzer Dragoon creator Yukio Futatsugi, having a codename referencing dragons with the same initials as Panzer Dragoon and, most suspiciously, having a codename at all, Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer told Joystiq he "woudn't call [Project Draco] a Panzer Dragoon game." "It's a Kinect game for one thing, which is going to have its own take on it," Spencer said, referring to the concept of riding a dragon. Spencer added that "there are some differences between -- as a Panzer Dragoon fan -- the stuff we've seen in the Panzer Dragoon series and [Project Draco]," but he didn't elaborate on those differences. During the Microsoft keynote where the game was announced, Futatsugi explained, "What I wanted to do most is to fly." So perhaps Draco is more flying and less on-rails shooting? So if it's not a Panzer Dragoon game, then what's up with the whole dragons-you-can-ride thing? "Futasugi-san does have a passion for dragons and the interactions between humans and dragons," Spencer said. "I think you could say 'inspired by' and obviously Futatsugi-san's heritage with that franchise is an important part of his history." But Spencer still "wouldn't characterize [Project Draco] as a Panzer Dragoon game." "I think there's some great things about the mechanic in Panzer Dragoon that can work really well, but we're not in any way trying to diminish the value of that franchise or steal from it." So we're guessing they're not going to call it "Tank Leviathoon."

You plummet down a dark, twisting tunnel, barely registering the lights that flash past because you're too busy juking one moment and jinking the next, avoiding death with a flick of your wrist. As enemies crowd around you, spewing missiles from every direction, you expertly guide a stream of deadly fire, targeting your opponents with a steady hand and an uncanny precision that, within seconds, leaves you and your dragon alone, hurtling down an empty passageway toward destinations unknown.Or at least, that's how it could be. Welcome to the inaugural edition of Born for Wii, a new weekly column looking back into the annals of gaming for titles that could be adapted for the Wii in new and exciting ways. This week, we'll take a look at Sega's highly appreciated but criminally undersold Panzer Dragoon series.%Gallery-24638%

Any gamer would need a heart of blackened teak to not have a soft spot for Sega, and there's arguably no better home for a dyed-in-the-wool Sega fan than the Wii. Over the coming weeks and months, Nintendo's little white box will be hosting a number of updated classic Sega properties, including NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, Samba De Amigo, and House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return. But our appetite for all things Sega is not yet sated! While we've already asked you which Saturn games you'd like to see on the Virtual Console, which Sega titles in general do you want to see reinvented on the Wii? A motion-sensitive Panzer Dragoon, the return of Ulala, and a Burning Rangers sequel top our list.

  • GameTap adds Panzer Zwei and Samurai Shodown

GameTap tells us that beginning today they'll have Panzer Dragoon II Zwei (redundant, we know), Neo Geo's Samurai Shodown and King of Fighters '98. It's not all retro though, Eidos' dead-soldier-parts-talking Rogue Trooper will also be available. The games are available on GameTap's subscription service, but we're really still enjoying last week's addition of Psychonauts, which we hope gets added to the GameTap's expanding free service at the end of the month so nobody will have an excuse anymore not to try it.But what we're really looking forward to is the debut of the GameTap's Mac capabilities next week. GameTap's blog is previewing what the Mac version will entail and the widgets they'll have available. Although newer games won't be supported just yet, a buffet of games for the Mac will be sweet. It may have taken 30 years, but it looks like Mac is finally getting its game on.

With Nintendo dropping four new Virtual Console titles every Monday, Sega Nerds has posted a list of ten sequels they'd like to see on a console near you. Heck, we just got Ecco the Dolphin this past Monday, so is this list timely or what? For us, the ones we'd really like to see are either an update of Skies of Arcadia, or some new hotness from Streets of Rage. We'd forgotten that game even existed until the picture slapped us across the face. Punching and kicking at its best. What Sega classics (and we're using that term lightly) would you like to see? While you're busy wishing, Joystiq wants a solid gold PlayStation 3. Just a little holiday FYI.
