  • PaperDude VR resurrects Paperboy with Oculus Rift, Kinect, KickR and a bike

One sad aspect of modern tech is that it's all but ruined our dreams of slinging dead trees for comic book money after school. However, gizmos have enabled a killer sequel to the best paperboy simulation ever. Using a smattering of electronics -- and a real bike! -- PaperDude VR is the followup we never knew we wanted. Joining an Oculus Rift VR headset, Microsoft Kinect and Wahoo Fitness KickR into a sweat-drenched union, PaperDude VR creates an almost zen-like experience of tossing newspapers, knocking down road barriers and busting windows. Nostalgia's a powerful drug, and we'd love a ride to see if chasing the dragon of our youth is as good as we remember. Given developer Globacore's history though, the chances of seeing this outside a specialized kiosk are slim to none. Regardless, we have one niggling question: Do pixelated paperdudes dream of 8-bit dogs?

  • Midway's XBLA classics removed from Marketplace

Several classic Midway games have been removed from Xbox Live Arcade, including Cyberball 2072, Defender, Gauntlet, Joust, Paperboy, Robotron 2084, Rootbeer Tapper, Smash TV and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. The titles have been pulled due to "publisher evolving rights and permissions," according to a Major Nelson tweet, but will remain playable and can be re-downloaded by users that previously purchased any of the games. While Major Nelson didn't expressly say so, it would appear that the disappearing titles are the result of Warner Bros.' acquisition of Midway last year. Warner Bros. now owns at least some of the trademarks involved in the removal from XBLA. You're not alone in suspecting that some of the affected titles were pulled in anticipation of Microsoft's upcoming Game Room (where different versions of the same games could presumably be made available for purchase). After all, the simply emulated Game Room games don't stack up well against their more fully-featured XBLA counterparts. However, Major Nelson has quashed that theory, tweeting, "No, it's not Game room related." This is not the first time that XBLA content has been pulled because of changing publisher relationships. Lost Cities was removed from XBLA last year after licensing rights were lost in the Activision-Vivendi merger.

You probably don't know the name Mark Haigh-Hutchinson, but you've almost certainly been entertained by one of the games he helped to create. From Paperboy and Zombies Ate My Neighbors to a series of Star Wars titles like Dark Forces and Rebel Assault, his career has spanned several years and several genres. Sadly, the programmer died on Tuesday after a struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was 43 years old.Perhaps the part of Haigh-Hutchinson's legacy that will be familiar to most of you though is his work with the Metroid Prime series, for which he served as senior engineer and helped to create the game's camera system. Besides his gaming legacy, he leaves behind him a wife and two daughters.[Thanks, Donald]

It's our job to inform you when new games arrive on Xbox Live Arcade. As such, we are compelled to let you know that you can now download Paperboy for your ... um ... paper delivering pleasure. We'd be lying if we said we were excited about it, though. We're sure that some of you have fond memories of the game, but we only remember relentless quarter gobbling difficulty and a premise that's not that fun to begin with. So, if paperboy floats your boat, or, more accurately, delivers your paper, then by all means enjoy it. The rest of us will enjoy the fact that Paperboy was the last remaining "retro" title on the recently announced list of Xbox Live Arcade games. Short of no game at all, we have to get something new next week.Should you desire to subscribe to Paperboy's shenanigans, it can be had for 400 MS points.

It's hard to say whether Paperboy is simply an effervescent arcade game or a frighteningly accurate simulation of life in the suburbs (see: video after the break). You'll be able to judge for yourself this coming Wednesday at 9AM GMT (1AM PST) when the intricate study in aggressive news distribution lands neatly on the Xbox Live Arcade doorstep. When you retrieve it while still in your stained bathrobe and your morning daze, keep in mind that the graphically enhanced download will set you back 400 MS Points ($5). Oh, and remember to duck. Those newspapers will take your head clean off.%Gallery-1602%

  • This week on XBLA: Paperboy delivers

The hideous noise you hear is the collective shriek of thousands of disappointed Worms fans. This week Xbox Live Arcade serves up yet another retro title, Paperboy. For those unfamiliar with the game, Paperboy charges players with delivering newspapers while trying not to damage property or take a nasty spill on their bicycle. New to the Xbox Live Arcade version is a cooperative multiplayer mode which can be played locally or over Xbox Live. As is the norm for retro Arcade titles, your elation or disgust will be dictated by the amount of nostalgia you feel for Paperboy.Frankly, we'd rather see any of the other recently announced titles hit the Arcade. At least this means we won't be disappointed next week (at least not as much). That is unless XBLA manages to have no new game at all.Let your voice be heard: are you planning to buy Paperboy?

  • Paperboy, Minigolf, and Root Beer achievements

Celebrating their one year anniversary, Achieve360Points.com posted the achievements for three upcoming XBLA titles. They've listed achievements for Paperboy, Minigolf Adventures, and Root Beer Tapper. Of course we'd all like to know when these new XBLA games are going to be released, but that's just asking a little much. We've always been huge fans of Paperboy with memories in or head of tossing papers through windows. But what's the draw to a game like Root Beer Tapper? Serving root beer to random bums on a lonely Friday night ... now that's living my friends.

  • Paperboy on your cell

Break out your VHS copy of Goonies and tight roll your jeans, the Paperboy has jumped out of your, um emulator and onto your cellphone. Sega Mobile's release, now available through most major US carriers, has brought the popular title back into our hearts and pockets so you can spend those mind-numbing hours delivering the news (just like us!) -- even though we tend to break a lot fewer windows now than we did back in the day. Funny how twenty years later we're still wrestling with the cult question: does the paperboy have a bum arm, or are the people on the right side of the street just illiterate?
