In honor of Valentine's Day, the folks at Sony have given you a demo for Patapon, a strategy-laden, color-filled, happiness-inducing rhythm game from the crazy minds behind LocoRoco. According to the official PlayStation blog, the demo is set to come out sometime today for you to download through either the PlayStation Network PC store or the PS3 store. It also has the "same save-to-final feature" as the UMD version, which we assume is the exclusive weapon we heard about in late January. In the time it took you to read this post, you could've downloaded the game already. What are you waiting for?%Gallery-11837%

Sony has a Valentines Day gift for those of you who are enamoured with the upcoming rhythm action game Patapon. Chances are you might've downloaded the Japanese demo of the game after it went online last week, but tomorrow you will be able to try it out in a language that is more familiar. The English demo will go online tomorrow and will be available from the PSN Store on PC and PS3. The demo has previously only been available by pre-ordering the game from Gamestop, so we're chuffed to see it being made available for all via "the power of the interwebs".Check back tomorrow for the full list of PSN Store updates, as usual.

Attractive graphics, a cute sense of style, and unique gameplay are all at the core of a game that's unlike anything we've seen before. These are some videos from the final English build of the game. While they may look good on your computer monitor, they'll look even better on your PSP. Stay tuned for our full review in a few days.

Those of you lucky enough to have a Japanese PLAYSTATION Network ID will be able to jump onto the PLAYSTATION Store (via PC or PS3) and download the brand new Patapon demo. However, be warned! This quirky game is best played when fully understood. Europe will be getting an English-language downloadable demo in the future, and Americans can pick up a UMD demo when pre-ordering the game at GameStop.[Thanks, Sean!]

Looks like GameStop's "exclusive" demo of Patapon isn't so exclusive. European gamers will be able to enjoy a small taste of Patapon before its release by visiting the PC-based PLAYSTATION Store on February 21st. The demo will also include the bonus weapon that GameStop proudly touts.Too bad America's PS Store probably won't receive the same treatment. Who doesn't want the instant gratification of downloading a demo directly to their Memory Stick?

If you're a PSP owner who wasn't planning on buying Patapon, you're out of your mind and you need to seriously evaluate your priorities. If you weren't planning on pre-ordering it though, we can't exactly say we blame you. (When was the last time you had trouble getting a PSP game you wanted?) But after some considerable pot sweetening on Sony's part, this is one pre-order we don't think you'll want to miss.If you pre-order at your local GameStop, not only will you get a demo for the game, but you'll get also get the demo-only item the "Spear of Protection." The bad news? Demos aren't in stock yet, but are due this week or next, so you'll need to keep calling your local GameStop every 20 minutes until they arrive or your phone number is blocked, whichever comes first.

You may want to rush over to GameStop. Why? By pre-ordering Patapon (for only $20, remember!) you will get a free demo disc. What makes this disc so special is that it allows you to create a save file compatible with the final version of the game. Yes, you'll actually get access to a brand new weapon that'll be available in the demo exclusively. The Spear of Protection, we assume, will uh, protect you. This is an incredible bonus for a game you were going to buy anyway. According to the PlayStation.blog, the demo discs should arrive to your local retailer in the next week or so. Happy hunting!

Though we haven't had a look at the final packaging just yet, Sony has given us an excellent idea as to what Patapon's back-of-the-box bullet points might say: Intriguing and utterly unique blend of strategy and rhythm gameplay! From the creators of the critically acclaimed LocoRoco! Bizarre, yet entirely endearing art style! Costs a mere $19.99! "Excellent" -- Joystiq, 21 Jan. 2008 Sony hopes that the lower price point will push Patapon to a broader audience, one perhaps unswayed by the unusual gameplay and our glowing, out-of-context recommendation. It's a wise move that also favors those of us already keen on rhythmically conquering the lands of Patapon.%Gallery-11837%

The price point for Patapon has just been announced over at the PlayStation.Blog and the news is darn good. The upcoming Sony-developed rhythm/RTS title is getting released at the ridiculously low price of $19.99 when it hits the stores next month. While this is normally the price of one of their Greatest Hits titles, Sony was worried that the unique and odd-ball nature of Patapon may result in it getting lost amongst the other big upcoming PSP titles. If our hands-on report hasn't gotten you excited about Patapon yet, hopefully this new development will pique your curiosity. It is seriously one of the most bizarre and entertaining experiences on the PSP yet, and definitely should not be missed. Pon Pon Pata Pon![Thanks Hasbrown_hunter!]

The oh-so-lovable Patapon are invading Japan. Will Japanese gamers understand the game through the simple message of this 15 second ad? (We hope so! Early sales indicate the title is performing quite sluggishly.) But, what will America have to do in order for such a quirky, inventive game to get the attention it deserves?

What would make Patapon even better? How about a budget price? It looks like SCEA may be trying to woo gamers into taking the plunge with these lovable critters by making the game launch at the very tasty price of $20. We don't know if this is just a price glitch on Gamestop's part, or if this price is official. We're hoping for the latter -- we know a lot more people will try this innovative game if they see it's available for so cheap.[Via PlayStation Boards]

The Joystiq staff is somewhat divided in our reactions to Patapon, the rhythm/real time strategy Frankengame coming to the PSP early next year. If you listened to the last Joystiq podcast, you know there are those of us who are completely entranced by its addictive gameplay, its charming visuals, and its catchy music. Still, there are some of us who watch the above trailer for the game and feel like we're staring down the barrel of a nightmare gun. Those pitch-black, cycloptic abominations are unsettling enough -- why do they have to sound like Furbys in a microwave?

We're really enjoying Patapon over at PS Fanboy HQ. The game is unique, unlike anything before it. The PlayStation.blog features a few new factoids about the game. For example, "the development team for Patapon is called Pyramid, but is being produced by Japan Studios, the same studio that developed and produced LocoRoco." So, saying it's from the same team as LocoRoco is, in fact, a little incorrect -- but not entirely. The creator of the game is actually Hiroyuki Kotani, the man responsible for the cult PS1 game Devil Dice. Of course, his greatest accomplishment (in our opinion) is Mad Maestro!.

  • Merry Christmas from the Patapon tribe

Sony is sending yet another Christmas gift to members of the media. This time, it's a Christmas card featuring the Patapon tribe. Stephen Totilo from MTV is as much love with the game as we are, and who can blame him? The music-war game is one of the most innovative in recent memory, and it has a truly endearing style. Totilo expresses a valid concern about most portable gamers: many seemingly play their systems on mute -- something that simply won't work for Patapon. Hopefully, when players are able to get their hands on Patapon next year, they'll bust out some headphones for this rhythmically inclined game.
