The UK's first PC gaming magazine, PC Zone, will end its 17-year, 225-issue run in September. Future Publishing is closing the magazine following a "strategic review," which probably had something to do with the magazine's sales of 11,000 copies a month. Both the BBC and Guardian have full articles on the magazine's demise and legacy. In a statement, Future Publishing stated it will focus its efforts on "market leader" PC Gamer going forward, which has twice the circulation of PC Zone.

  • All but one Future publication saw circulation dip in 2009

[Image credit: benben] Can you guess which of Future Publishing's nine magazines didn't lose readership in 2009? If your money was with Edge, you've got our permission to give yourself a nice big pat on the back. Go ahead, we'll wait. Done? Good. Like we were saying, the UK game mag publisher saw shrinking circulation numbers in 2009 -- the same year that saw the closure of PlayStation World by Future and the shuttering of long-running US gaming mag EGM by Ziff-Davis. While Edge circulation numbers rose by (a somewhat meager) 109 readers, Games Master dropped by 6,636 (to 34,313), PC Zone by 7,666 (to 11,357), and Xbox World 360 by 5,156 (to 25,874). While those numbers might seem a bit on the low side, that has more to do with the smaller size/population of the UK than anything else (though, of course, dropping readership numbers don't mean good things for any publication house). According to the GamesIndustry.biz report, Future blames the circulation drops on "slowing sales and ad spend [advertisers spending on print advertising]." We've dropped the entire list of circulation numbers after the break (care of the UK Audit Bureau of Circulations), should you be so inclined to peruse all the stats.

  • PC Zone: Deus Ex 3 confirmed as prequel, blessed by original creators

As anticipated, PC Zone has headlined its 200th issue with a Deus Ex 3 preview, reports its online counterpart, CVG. The second sequel to the "Best PC Game of All Time" (according to a 2007 poll conducted by -- who else? -- PC Zone) will be a prequel set in 2027 and apparently has received the blessings of the original designers, Warren Spector and Harvey Smith, along with consultative help from the original writer, Sheldon Pacotti. Still, we should remind you that Deus Ex 3 is being developed by a largely untested team, in Eidos Montreal, and the studio has made some, um, changes: Combat won't be influenced by stats, just your FPS skills (or is that "skillz"?) Instead, stats will affect "a vast array of fully upgradeable and customizable weapons" (there will be more than one type of ammo); experience points can be attributed to weapons or augmentations 20 augmentations are promised; examples: "bungee jump tentacles" that fire from your back and anchor into walls (useful when jumping off buildings / faking your death); the ability to punch through walls ... and grab enemies on the other side! Stealth will be implemented into a new cover system Damage will be recovered by auto-healing (think: most FPSs these days -- even ones without so-called "augmentations") The complete 10-page preview hits UK newsstands on October 9th. Scans are hitting the internet right about ... now!

  • Rumor: Deus Ex 3 coming-out party in next month's PC Zone mag

We don't know much about Deus Ex 3 – we know it's coming; we know it's being developed by the unproven team at Eidos Montreal; and we know it will use Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider engine. If a pic snagged by GAFfer Endless is to be believed, next month's PC Zone magazine (its "200th issue spectacular"!) will have a lot more details. If the internet has taught us anything – besides the gullibility of its users – it's that one can reasonably expect magazines to end up in the hands of scan-happy forum-goers well in advance of their purported street dates, so hopefully we'll know if this is legit before October 9th.

It takes guts to name your MMO-based magazine What MMO. You can imagine for yourself the raft of jokes that will inevitably be unleashed on this new magazine, which will be bundled with PC Gamer, PC Zone, and Windows Vista The Official Magazine. If you'd prefer not to purchase one of these fine publications just to check it out, you can preview the issue by checking out its digital version. It's a decent little mag, featuring spreads on Age of Conan, Jumpgate: Evolution, and smaller stories for most of the other major MMOs available. Even so, we'll get the jokes started by saying "What MMO were they thinking?"[Source]

  • The Secret World inspired by 'The Ring'

Funcom's been playing it cagey with any information surrounding their (presumably) upcoming MMO The Secret World, but intel does trickle out. To wit: in an interview with PC Zone magazine (due out on Thursday), the developer mentions that the Japanese horror flick 'The Ring' was an inspiration for the project. I've already assumed that there would be Lovecraftian elements involved, and while I wouldn't typify 'The Ring' as having those particular features (as the referring article does), it's definitely going to be dark indeed. In fact, it's not clear what, exactly, in 'The Ring' was the inspiration for TSW, but if they're able to capture even half of the dread that movie invokes, then I'm all for it. And while I'm on the subject, I'm also in favor of not knowing well in advance every little nuance of gameplay, or not having access to tons of screenshots of the game under development. Sometimes, a little mystery goes a long way.

  • Jeff Kaplan reveals how to get to Northrend

MMO Champion's got the rest of the details on that PC Zone interview we heard about yesterday-- Jeff Kaplan sat down with the French magazine and gave out some new hints about what we'll see up in Northrend in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. As we heard at BlizzCon, Northrend isn't all a snow-covered wasteland-- there are forests (including one full of Furbolgs) and other terrain types to find up there. We've also heard this before, but it's worth repeating again: Arthas will play a much bigger part in the day-to-day Northrend than Illidan did-- lots of people, both raiders and casuals, will have a chance to "interact" with him. Here's something new-- there will be two entry points, and previously we'd assumed that one would be for Horde and another would be for Alliance. But that's not the case-- instead, each of the zones (the Borean Tundra and the Howling Fjord) will have an entry point for each faction. So there will actually be four ways into the expansion. Alliance get to choose a battle in the Howling Fjord or a massive stronghold (complete with a brand new faction leader) and a giant steamship And Horde either go into the Forsaken's new lands (with new architecture-- we saw it at BlizzCon), or into Garrosh Hellscream's (son of Grom) Warsong Fortress. Very exciting. Hearing about four entry points instead of two definitely makes me think that we will be able to avoid the whole Hellfire Peninsula lag problem that plagued BC's release. Keep the WotLK info coming, Blizzard!

  • PC Zone has Wrath PvP teaser info

PC Zone magazine has an interview with WoW Lead Designer Jeff Kaplan. In it Kaplan reveals details about Wrath of the Lich King PvP warfare as well as the epic feel players will experience when first entering Northrend. Sounds great, huh?Unfortunately, you have to buy the magazine today to get the entire interview. They have only released a snippet of it online to send us into a frenzy of anticipation. What we learn from this sneak peek is that the Northrend PvP zone, Lake Wintergrasp, will be about the size of Westfall and will be all PvP. No PvE objectives in it at all. It will also be a static zone, not instanced. He also mentions that it will have destructible buildings and siege weapons, which we knew from his Leipzig interviews. Not much new there other than the size comparison to Westfall.Kaplan also talked about learning from the Hellfire Peninsula experience. This entry point into the first expansion wasn't epic enough. The design team wants to raise the bar for Northrend. We know from earlier interviews that entry into the expansion will be split. The Alliance will grab their sword and the Horde will get their own damn battlecry and both head into either Howling Fjord or Borean Tundra. How Blizzard is going to raise the bar is still a mystery.Argh! More infoz, please! If anyone gets their hands on the magazine, send us a tip with details. We'll happily give you credit.EDIT: Clarified entry points for both factions.[via World of Raids]%Gallery-5525%
