  • Ten features Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn needs ASAP

It's been a long, agonizing wait for die-hard fans of Final Fantasy XIV, but A Realm Reborn finally launched this week. And as with just about any major MMO launch, sheer chaos has ensued. But that's not what I'm here to talk about (though I'm sure someone in the comments will do it for me). I'm a big sucker for quality-of-life features in MMOs because as far as I'm concerned, anything that reduces tedium and allows me to focus on the game itself is definitely a good thing. While the folks over at Square Enix have certainly worked wonders bringing Final Fantasy XIV in line with modern MMO design, things still aren't quite perfect. If you've got the time -- and let's face it, the servers are probably under maintenance as you read this -- I'd love for you to join me past the cut as I dish on the 10 features I'd like to see added to FFXIV: A Realm Reborn.

  • The Perfect Ten: My gaming pet peeves

In general, I try to be an optimistic fellow. When it comes to gaming -- you know, that hobby we apparently love and enjoy -- I'd rather look on the bright side than the angry, cynical, disgruntled dark side most days of the week. There needs to be balance between such outlooks to be sure, but if I'm to err, I'd rather err as a happy gamer than a bitter one. So today's list will be a departure for me, as I'm going to complain at great length about stupid little things that annoy me in MMOs. I look at it like lancing a boil: painful, gross, and generally relieving. If you want to join in with me, just remember that the area can get infected if you keep picking at it for too long. What ticks me off? Open Pandora's Box below and ye shall never know peace...

  • Breakfast Topic: What do other players do that really annoys you?

This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW Insider's pages. WoW is a game of interaction. If you want to do any dungeons, serious PvP, or tough quests, you have to work with other players. Also like the real world, occasionally we meet other people we like, some we instantly click with, some who grow on us over time, and some people who just annoy the heck out of us. Sometimes it is in-game actions we find distasteful; sometimes it is how they talk to other players or any other variety of actions that hits a nerve. With some of these people, we have to bury our dislike because they are in our guilds, and we just do an if they don't bother me, I won't bother them approach. Others, we can avoid entirely and make use of the wonderful /ignore feature. One of my biggest pet peeves is ganking. Killing someone who is 20 or 30 levels lower than you isn't honorable. It doesn't make you cool -- it is basically a grown man beating up a toddler. The worst part of it is that these same players tend to run and hide when someone their own level comes out to defend the noobs. This is a cowardly act. Another issue I have is people who use Xbox Live talk when they are frustrated -- they immediately devolve into racist, homophobic, and just awful and often nonsensical comments. My final pet peeve is people who mispronounce words in Vent but say them over and over as if it was on their word-of-the-day calender, pronouncing melee "mealie, mealie" and using it as if it were their new favorite word. Are there certain actions other players commit that really annoy you? What do you find truly distasteful? Do you have some of these people who annoy you in your guild? Or are you one of the offenders?

Kill Ten Rats says that in his MMO, using phrases like "u r" (as in "you are"-- yeah, I don't do it either) should flag you for PvP, as should writing "lol" ten times, or using the word "ghey".I'd have to say that I agree, but what if you could design your own MMO, tailored especially to your own tastes? In my MMO, ganking someone below your level would give them a 10 minute buff that would make them stronger than you for 10 minutes or until they killed you, whichever came first. In my MMO, NPCs would be extremely excited and generous even after seeing you complete the simplest of quests. "Wow, you killed all those rats in my basement? Here, have this Holy Avenger Sword!"In my MMO, anyone who needed a group could get one without waiting, and all group members would instantly appear wherever they needed to be once the group was formed. These are all pretty nice, but what can I say-- I'm a nice guy. Your wishes might be a little... harsher. If you had a designer at your beck and call to create the MMO of your own personal dreams, what would be "in my MMO"?

Does leet speak reduce your WoW playing enjoyment? Do caps lock and abbreviations set your teeth on edge? If so, Xkhan agrees with you and attributes it possibly to age. His list of pet peeves incites an interesting forum thread discussing in-game annoyances along with the etymological origins of some leet speak. For example, did you know that GG stands for Good Game? While it is currently used sarcastically, for years it has been spammed at the end of FPS games as a show of good sportsmanship. Ah, playing CTF in Tribes II with the Hammer or something-or-other mod equaled hours of pure gaming pleasure. But I digress...We've discussed pet peeves before and whether or not we are killing our language with leetspeak. Many mature players would prefer not to play with children who are incapable of forming grammatically correct sentences or playing their character properly. But do we get more upset with these annoyances the older we get?

This thread in the general forums brings up a good discussion topic about everyone's in-game pet peeves. And note the definition - a minor annoyance that causes extreme frustration. I have a number of them, myself, including people who refer to me only as "priest," players who start yelling "HAEL ME!!!" the second they take damage, and the players who see me shadowforming in PvP and feel they need to lecture me on the worthlessness of a priest that doesn't heal. (The latter especially irritates me, as anyone who's played with me for a while should realize that, even with a shadow spec, I know how to shift out of shadowform, and if I wind up in a good group will spend entire AV matches healing. Argh! I get frustrated just thinking about it!) But what are your personal pet peeves in this game?
