When you take a moment to really think about it, isn't it odd that Arrested Development came up with the name "Bob Loblaw" before the wordplay-stuffed Phoenix Wright did? When you start replaying the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy this week, try to imagine Scott Baio at Phoenix Wright's desk, repeatedly closing a book from different angles - doesn't it just fit? Capcom's updated trilogy is this week's headline debutante on the eShop, even if Bob Loblaw is this week's headline. That said, it sure ain't the only new release. As ever, you'll find the full list of newbies below the break, and if you're after eShop sales then drop that law bomb here.

Capcom announced court dates for the 3DS redrawn, higher-res Ace Attorney Trilogy, with eShop orders scheduled for December 9 in North America and December 11 in Europe. The constitutional compilation includes the first three GBA/DS games starring sweat-soaked defense attorney Phoenix Wright, namely Ace Attorney, Ace Attorney: Justice for All and Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations. Legal fees are $30 in North America and 30 euros/£25 across the pond, and like Dual Destinies the game is eShop-only, with no physical release in the West.

To properly hype fans for this winter's Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Capcom has prepared a series of screenshots comparing the original Ace Attorney games to their updated, 3DS counterparts. As you'd expect, the leap from older handhelds to the 3DS offers Capcom's artists more aesthetic freedom and the result is a more colorful, less pixelated adventure. To see for yourself, visit the Capcom Unity website, where the publisher has posted 12 comparison screenshots in addition to the image seen above. We're still waiting on an official release date for the game, but as we're rapidly approaching the holiday season, that information should appear soon. [Image: Capcom]

Capcom confirmed the 3DS HD package of Phoenix Wright's Game Boy Advance trilogy arrives this winter as an eShop game, priced at $30. The 3-in-1 game includes Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations, with Capcom promising "redrawn, high-definition graphics" as well as 3D support. Capcom adds the Western game includes the version recently released in Japan, allowing players to switch between the two as they wish - a surprising plus for games filled with so much text. There's no word yet on concrete release dates or specific regions, but a US price is evidence enough of an appearance stateside at least. [Image: Capcom]

The first three Ace Attorney games are reportedly coming to 3DS, with a court date in Japan set for April 17. According to Siliconera and Shinobi (via Gematsu), this week's issue of Famitsu says the Game Boy Advance trilogy - that's Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations - are to be enhanced on the handheld with stereoscopic 3D. The 3DS bundle, titled Ace Attorney 123: Wright Selection, wouldn't be the games' first re-release by any stretch. Capcom already summoned the tribunal trio on DS, WiiWare, and PC, and as an HD package on iOS. We've reached out to Capcom to confirm reports, and to find out if the sweat-slicked lawyer will re-appear in a western version. Update: When approached, a Capcom representative told Joystiq, "This title is not confirmed for release in the west at this time." PS: That's an image of the Phoenix Wright movie, not the 3DS game... the enhancements won't be that good.

  • PSA: Phoenix Wright Trilogy HD settles on the App Store today

Just to clear up any lingering confusion, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD is available on the App Store right now, after being delayed from fall to July, and then moved back up to May 30. That's today, and the game is definitely out. The iOS trilogy includes the first three Phoenix Wright games, Ace Attorney, Ace Attorney Justice for All, and Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations. The initial two episodes of the first game, Ace Attorney, are free, and the remaining three episodes in that game are $6. The following two games are $7 each, or there's a pack that includes all of the games and all episodes for $17. Got all that? Dang, legalese is confusing.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD has been pegged for a May 30 launch on iOS. The game was initially announced for last fall, pushed back to July and has now been bumped up to the end of this month. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD is a bundle of the first three DS games, Ace Attorney, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations, all "remastered and enhanced for retina displays," Capcom says. The app itself is a free download for iOS 5.0 and greater devices, with the first two chapters of the first game serving as a demo. Each game may be purchased separately – the first is $6 and the other two are $7 each – or in a collection for $17.

  • Objection! Phoenix Wright Trilogy HD delayed again for iOS, due July

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy HD won't be summoned onto iOS devices as planned this month after Capcom adjourned the game again. The upscaled remastering of the three DS games was originally due last fall, but delays took it into early 2013, then April. In a hardly encouraging but certainly candid post on the Ask Capcom forums, Senior VP Christian Svensson said, "For reasons unknown to me, the release has slid another several months to July. Sorry guys."When the free-to-download app eventually arrives, it'll feature Ace Attorney, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations as purchasable games within it, both separately and bundled together. It'll also include an 'Everybody Object' mode that lets you email and tweet Phoenix Wright catchphrases via sound files and animated tweets, which by our reckoning would work as its own app, really.

Ace Attorney, feature-length film, is hitting North American shores this June at the AM2 (anime, manga and music) convention in Anaheim, California. Ace Attorney, directed by Ichi the Killer's Takashi Miike, debuted as a feature film in Japan earlier this month.AM2 will hold two exclusive screenings at the Anaheim Convention Center, one for passport holders only and one with pass holders preferred and general audience as seating permits. The AM2 convention runs from June 15-17.While this isn't exactly a widespread theatrical release for Ace Attorney, it does open the doors for US screenings. Keep your eyes on your local independent theaters for a chance to see all the cartoony flair (and hair) of Phoenix Wright in reality.

A promotional flyer for a movie isn't the sort of thing we typically post around here, but in Phoenix Wright's case, we'll make an objection exception. The movie's website also has two trailers available, including a cleaner version of the one we saw in October. Check out the full flyer at Andriasang, and find the trailers on the official site (in the bottom righthand corner).

The Phoenix Wright movie is lookin' good, you guys. We were foolish to ever doubt the incredible directorial abilities of the great Takashi Miike (Ichii The Killer, IZO), but we've been burned before, and it's hard to put faith into a video-game adaptation film these days. The production still released a few days ago helped ease our fears a little bit, but the above footage has pushed us completely over the edge into straight-up excited territory. The clip is a bit noisy, sure, on account of the confusing, disembodied screaming, but the underlying cinematography and character designs look spot on. There's still no word on the film receiving a stateside release, but Miike's work has enjoyed a cult following in the U.S. for years, as has the Phoenix Wright series, so it doesn't seem entirely outside the realm of possibility. Gyakuten Saiban will hit Japanese theaters on February 11. Update: The trailer has been pulled from YouTube.

If you were wondering how Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney would look as interpreted by director Takashi Miike, the answer is in the promotional image above: it looks exactly like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. That shockingly meticulous promo image was released along with a teaser site for the Ace Attorney movie, which revealed a February 11 release date. In Japan, obviously. No announcements have been made regarding a US release -- but if the rest of the movie is as accurate as this, we'll know every line of dialogue anyway.

Capcom has officially announced that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will head to the cineplexes of Japan in Spring 2012. Wright will be played by Hiroki Narimiya (not ringing any bells?), while antagonistic attorney Miles Edgeworth will be played by Takumi Saito. Phoenix's charmingly naive assistant, Maya Fey, will be channeled by Mirei Kiritani. Of course, you'll probably recognize the director (as reported earlier): Takashi Miike of Audition, Crows Zero and -- most recently -- Thirteen Assassins. If you find the idea of a live-action, comedic courtroom adventure odd, you must not have been around for the Phoenix Wright musical a couple years back. [Thanks, Matthew]

Three photographs have surfaced of what appear to be a set from Takashi Miike's Ace Attorney film. According to Hachimaki, the sets are in Kyoto, where Miike was already reported to be shooting a movie. If the sets are real, they point to an adaptation of the first Phoenix Wright game, as they are a perfect representation of the Gourd Lake location where that game's fourth case, "Turnabout Goodbyes," takes place -- which means we'll get to see a live-action representation of paranormal photographer Lotta Hart. That's exciting, right? It probably is to the amateur shutterbugs who captured these images.%Gallery-124334%

Speaking to reporters during the Cannes film festival, director Takashi Miike (Audition, Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai, and a million other things) announced his next film: "It is a very light comedy that I am filming now," as the Huffington Post quotes him, "a court drama, based on a video game, the Nintendo game DS." Warning: that Huffington Post interview is pretty much entirely about ritual suicide except for that brief quote. HOLD IT! If we're reading this correctly, that means a high-profile, acclaimed film director is adapting the Ace Attorney series from the dual screens to the big screen. This is the best news ever for fans of overblown, overdressed arguments. This isn't Miike's first game adaptation about people in brightly colored suits. In 2007, Miike directed a live-action film based on Yakuza.

  • Capcom launches Ace Attorney 10th anniversary website on 9th anniversary

    10.12.2010

Capcom must be planning something big for the 10th anniversary of the Ace Attorney series, as it's opened an anniversary website exactly one year early. Either that or someone thought this year was the 10th anniversary, and Capcom just decided to roll with it. The anniversary site features commentary by series composers, staff, and even the actress who played Phoenix Wright in the Takarazuka Revue musicals. There's also an interview with creator Shu Takumi, who started work on the first Phoenix Wright as a summer project after Dino Crisis 2. Meanwhile, Andriasang reports that a "???x???" link at the official site displays a book with the words "Majo Saiban" ("Witch Judgment") on it, suggesting a collaboration between the TV drama by that name and the Ace Attorney series. Curiously, the book is blank when we look at it.
