Acer Iconia Smart arrives in September, doesn't apologize for being late
Five months is a very long time to wait for the large-handed smartphone addict, but finally there is some good news, everybody! We previewed Acer's massive 4.8-inch phone / tablet hybrid back in February and it looked like it would arrive in the U.S. sometime in April. It's now August and and according to Acer's Facebook page, we still have a month to wait. The phoneblet (Yes, there's already a name) retains the same specs we heard about in February: Snapdragon processor, twin cameras and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. When it finally does arrive, it'll cost Europeans €499 -- around $710. [Thanks, Christof]
Keepin' it real fake: the 1.2GHz Dell Streak that can make phone calls and run Gingerbread
You know, knockoffs are usually meant to be downgrades from the real deal. In the case of Dell's Streak 7 tablet, its KIRF version actually has a few advantages over the real deal -- it can make phone calls, has a bigger (3000mAh) battery, comes preloaded with Android 2.3, runs at 1.2GHz, and happens to be cheaper at just under $180 unsubsidized. Of course, its 7-inch WVGA screen relies on resistive technology for touch input, it only has one core, and there's no evidence of this Gingerbread installation actually running, but are you really gonna let such trifling details stand in your way? Is this Nokia's tablet-shaped MeeGo device?
Consider this little slice of photography uncorroborated for now, but we just couldn't ignore a device that's ostensibly running MeeGo software while sporting a bold Nokia logo front and center on its shell. This mysterious slate has cropped up over at the mobile-review forums, where amateur sleuthing has already noted that the landscape centering of the Nokia logo is atypical -- both the N97 and N900 have it off-center -- which may well suggest this is a landscape-centric tablet first and a phone second (if at all!). Assuming the brand name imprint is the same size as on the N8 (Nokia loves to standardize those), we could be looking at a 4.5-inch screen on what is either an internal test device, or, more optimistically, a prototype for actual hardware. It's worth noting that the MeeGo seen on board is of the stock variety, whereas Nokia intends to ship its new flagship device(s) with an as-yet-unseen set of UI customizations collectively known as Harmattan. So we're certainly not looking at anything close to a final hardware / software pairing, but we are looking at something. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Acer's 4.8-inch phoneblet will head to a US carrier this year
You'll remember last month that Acer released a total of three Android tablets, including one 4.8-inch phone / tablet hybrid. Well, Acer's brought the phoneblet -- yes, we're calling it that -- it to CES, and while it wouldn't power on, we did notice that the back of the device was marked with a "WCDMA: US band sticker". Acer confirmed for us that the "100 percent phone, 100 percent tablet" will be heading to the US in April with Froyo or Honeycomb and that carrier partnerships are in the works. Obviously, this WCDMA unit would be destined for AT&T or T-Mobile, however an Acer's spokesperson also hinted that it could be coming to Verizon like the Iconia Tab A500. The metal device felt really nice in hand, but we couldn't turn on the unique 1024 x 480-resolution, 21:9 aspect ratio display. We're imaging that its 1GHz Snapdragon processor will provide a pretty snappy experience, but it looks like we'll be waiting a few more months to check out the entire package. %Gallery-113449%
