  • The nostalgic joy of playing 'Pinball FX2' in VR

I associate pinball with family, partly because my father convinced me it was cool when I was a kid, just like he did with The X-Files, Mystery Science Theater 3000, ping pong and a handful of other quasi-nerdy necessities from the '80s and '90s. Plus, one of my uncles had a room packed with pinball machines -- yes, he had the Addams Family table -- and as a pre-teen I'd revel in playing them late into the night every New Year's Eve. Now that I'm an adult, it's my turn to show these family members what's cool (or simply how to use Gmail), and virtual reality is absolutely on that list. I'm not saying VR will take off commercially or change the world, but it is definitely a cool thing. And now, there's a clear way for me to introduce it to my dad, uncle or anyone with an affinity for those rapid-fire flippers: Pinball FX2 VR on the Oculus Rift.

Pinball FX creator Zen Studios released a bundle this week featuring tables from Archer, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers and American Dad. The pack, called Balls of Glory, is available now across PS3, PS4, Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows 10, Steam, Android and iOS (whew). And all of this exists because of a tweet, as Zen Studios VP of Publishing Mel Kirk explains.

Zen Studios has announced a hyper uppercut to its addictive XBLA release, Pinball FX, with a new table dedicated to Street Fighter. The Super Street Fighter II Turbo table is the pinball game's fourth expansion, and is expected to be available for purchase on November 12. No price for the download has been revealed, though we hope that neither Zen nor Capcom expect us to pay more than the 200 points normally asked for these tables, simply for the prestige that comes from rolling balls across Ryu's face.%Gallery-36271%

Just about two and a half months after Halloween, XBLA game Pinball FX is getting the spooky Nightmare Mansion expansion table. With "haunted house motifs, monstrous sounds and ghoulish effects" for 200 MS Points ($2.50), we can't decide if this expansion is a couple months late or a pregnancy too early. The Nightmare Mansion expansion is apparently the first in several expansion tables planned within the coming weeks. Coincidentaly, a free Buccaneer table for Pinball FX released last Halloween. Somewhere, somehow, we feel some lines got crossed.[Via Press Release]

The Buccaneer Table is pirate themed and according to the description, it'll "shiver your timbers!" Last week saw some demolition to the Live Top Ten list with the Command and Conquer 3 demo shaking up the top three. This week, the same thing happens, but it's out of left field with Pinball FX, which incidentally was also the top downloaded Arcade title as well, popping into third, behind Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas. All of which are followed by Guitar Hero II and the C&C3 demo. Call of Duty 3 moves down to sixth, while GRAW 2 stays put, Crackdown moves up to eighth. 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures proves it has some staying power by pulling off second to last, with Oblivion rounding off the list at tenth. Full list available after the break.

Yesterday, to go along with the announcement of the double header Wednesday with Eets: Chowdown and Pinball FX, the guys over at Xbox 360 Achievements uncovered all the Achievements for Eets: Chowdown, while having had Pinball FX's set for a while now. So go ahead and take a quick peek and what you'll be shooting for in the puzzle game. We're kinda craving a Double Marshoburger ourself. That being said we're kind of curious why "Smoreland" is worth 0 Gamerscore. Anyway, the game looks promising, will you be playing it tomorrow?

Hachi machi! Another double dose of XBLA hotness this week! Following up last weeks delirium inducing release of both MiniGolf Adventures and Gyruss, Microsoft will be bringing Eets: Chowdown and Pinball FX this Wednesday for 800 Microsoft Points each.Klei Entertainment, who is also behind N+ for XBLA, is responsible for Eets: Chowdown which combines the spirit of Lemmings with the chemically unbalanced nature of Princess Peach. Pinball FX, on the other hand, has us slightly less thrilled with three fictional boards to choose from, online play and optional support for the Vision Camera to control the flippers. Yay on the online play and nay on the arm flailing flippers, thanks.Whether you're excited for these two or not, you have to admit -- two titles a week is a huge improvement over barely hitting two titles a month.

For the second straight week in a row we have two XBLA titles releasing this Wednesday in one amazing double header. Both Eets: Chowdown and Pinball FX will be released on April 25th to the XBLA with both games setting you back 800 Microsoft points. We can't deny that we are extremely excited to get our hands on Eets, but are definitely open to a little pinball fun too. With two twofer XBLA weeks back to back we can't help but be excited for the Arcade and how it is shaping up. Now Microsoft just has to keep the goods rolling through certification and nobody will be verbally abused. So, is anyone excited for this week's Arcade offerings?

It looks like that silly rumor was true as Microsoft just announced a bigger memory card for the Xbox 360. The new 512MB Xbox 360 memory card will be available April 3rd, will retail for $49.99, and for a limited time will come pre-loaded with Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. Simultaneously, the ancient 64MB memory card will drop in price to $29.99 (be on the lookout for clearance prices). Also, with the announcement of the new 512MB card, the XBLA size limit will be raised from 50MB to 150MB allowing developers to run wild with their creativity. Microsoft also announced that they'll be showcasing XBLA titles Boom Boom Rocket, 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures, Eets: Chowdown, Jetpac Refuelled, and Pinball FX at GDC. Check out the full press release after the break. So, after reading that informative spiel what is your gut reaction? We definitely agree with raising the XBLA size limit to 150MB and find the 512MB memory card to be a much better deal than the old 64MB version. And for curiosity's sake, is there anyone out there who just purchased a 64MB memory card and is kicking themselves?

XBLArcade got the insider's scoop on new XBLA title Pinball FX. The official site for this arcade title is live and this looks to be the long promised 3D pinball game from last year. For features we're loving the Xbox Vision integration, the use of downloadable content, and head-to-head multiplayer mode. It's just like playing with a friend at the local bowling alley. This could be a fun title, but that is highly dependent on the price. Our sweet spot would be around 600 Microsoft points ... and yes we're cheap. Make the jump for a full feature list and additional screenshots, but be sure not to tilt the machine ... it's very touchy.
