Pininfarina debuts ultra-rare $2.9 million version of its electric hypercar
Is Pininfarina's Battista electric hypercar just not exclusive enough for you? You're in luck. The Italian automaker has unveiled a special Battista Anniversario variant that pushes the EV even further. It still revolves around that 1,900HP quad-motor system with a 217MPH top speed and a range topping 311 miles, but it should deliver sharper performance through wheels that are 22lbs lighter, larger at the rear (21 inches) and improved aerodynamics. The Anniversario will come standard with a "Furiosa" package (a revamped front splitter, side blades and rear diffuser) available for any Battista, but it'll also have a custom rear wing, rear fins and "other bespoke details."
Pininfarina's $2 million electric hypercar boasts a 250MPH top speed
When Pininfarina teased its PF0 electric hypercar in March, it didn't do more than promise a massive amount of power and a 2020 launch. It's starting to dribble out details, however, and it now looks like the PF0 may deliver the best of all worlds -- at a cost. In separate interviews with Wired and The Verge, the company has provided both teaser pictures of the PF0 (surprise: it's sleek) and performance numbers that could make Tesla Roadster buyers at least momentarily nervous. It can reach a blistering 250MPH top speed, reach 60MPH in under two seconds and provide about 310 miles of driving range. You'll no doubt have to be gentle on the throttle to achieve that last figure, but this is theoretically a vehicle you can take on a city-to-city jaunt with some bursts of mind-numbing quickness in between.
Pininfarina will go from designer to automaker with all-EV lineup
For decades, Pininfarina has largely been a design house -- it shaped and built cars, but usually under someone else's name (such as the Ferrari F40). It's apparently ready to become a full-fledged manufacturer, however, and a thoroughly 21st century one at that. Autocar sources have heard that Pininfarina is launching an all-electric car lineup headlined by a hypercar, nicknamed PF-Zero, that would aim squarely at the Bugatti Chiron with a 2020 launch. It would have power comparable to the 1,479HP of the Chiron, and would be based on a modular platform jointly developed by its parent company Mahindra (a Formula E competitor) and Rimac. There would also be more accessible models... relatively speaking.
Pininfarina's stunning tree-shaped Antares EV charging station should be more than a prototype
Despite being first showcased in May, Pininfarina's Antares has just slipped across our desks -- and frankly, it's a concept too gorgeous for us not to share. The beautiful tree-like structure -- comprised of steel and aluminum -- supports 20 photovoltaic cells, which the Italians reckon can produce up to 4.6 kilowatts, or just about enough juice to top up two fifty-mile range EVs. That's the plan anyway; we'll supposedly know more later this year, but given Pininfarina's past EV efforts, maybe not. Either way, consider this our formal pre-order request for two -- they'd look perfect right outside Engadget HQ.
Pininfarina delays prototype showing of B0 electric car
You know things are rough in the auto industry when even an electric car company is struggling to carry on, but that's exactly what seems to be happening with Pininfarina. After showcasing its rather cute B0 electric car at the Paris Motor Show last year, the company was slated to debut a prototype with a working engine at next week's show in Geneva. Instead, it'll be hosting up that same B0 shell as before, with an undisclosed inside source noting that lingering debt problems were forcing the delay. Unfortunately, the mole failed to elaborate on the matter, so we're left with absolutely no indication of when the company may switch gears and forge ahead with production. In other words, don't bank on this being your next ride -- unless you plan on lending the designing company a few hundred million to clear a path forward, of course.[Via Register Hardware]
Pininfarina-designed B0 electric car debuts at Paris Motor Show
Pininfarina said it was going to build an electric car and, go figure, it's actually built one. As we had heard earlier, the car, now dubbed the B0, is the result of a collaboration with the Bolloré Group, which was mostly responsible for the car's lithium metal polymer battery pack. Pininfarina, for its part, seems to have handled just about everything else, and it sure looks to have gone all out, with the car promising a range of 150 miles and a reasonable top speed of 80 mph, plus some suitably nifty touches like two LCD screens for instrumentation, and even some solar cells on the roof to help top off the battery (most of the charging while driving is done with regenerative braking). Pininfarina is also apparently still ticking to its 2010 roll-out date, with mass production set to begin in late 2009 -- no promises on a price just yet though.
Fabrik intros colorful new SimpleTech Signature Mini USB drives
Those looking for something that'll stand out a little more than your run-of-the-mill external hard drive now have a slew of new options to consider from Fabrik, which has once again teamed with Italian design firm Pininfarina on some of its SimpleTech-branded drives. Dubbed the Signature Mini, the drives are available in your choice of seven different colors and 120GB, 160GB, 250GB or 320GB capacities, although each color is not available in each size. Taking things one step further, each drive comes with 2GB of free online backup space, and optional unlimited online backup for $5 a month, each options of which employ 448-bit Blowfish encrypted servers to keep your data safe. Look for the whole lot to be available sometime next month for between $110 and $230, although Mac users will have to wait until later in Q1 in order to take advantage of the online backup options.
Pininfarina sets out to build its own all-electric car
Pininfarina may be best known as the design firm behind vehicles from Ferrari, Maserati and the like, but it's mainly popped up on our radar as of late due to its sporadic forays into hard drive design. We're now getting a little closer to the company's bread and butter, however, as the firm recently announced that it's planning to build it's own all-electric car. That'll apparently be done in collaboration with France's Bolloré Group, who'll supply the car's Lithium Metal Polymer battery technology while Pininfarina handles just about everything else (including the branding). Details on the car itself are still a bit light, obviously, but it'll apparently be a four-seater, and boast a range of 155 miles in city driving, with a top speed of 81 miles per hour. No word on what they expect the car to cost, unfortunately, but Pininfarina's hoping to have it available in Europe, Japan, and the United States by 2010.[Via Core77]

We don't often wind-tunnel test our external drive enclosures, but SimpleTech's re-released Pininfarina-designed SimpleDrive still kind of makes us want to break down to try. Now in capacities up to 1TB, the 7200rpm USB 2.0 drives come bundled with backup software, a 2GB Fabrik account (which might have had something to do with Fabrik acquiring SimpleTech's peripheral business), that inline light-up capacity meter, and your choice of colors based on capacity: red (160GB), white (250GB), sapphire (320GB), onyx (500GB) and gray (750GB and 1TB). We've never really felt the specific urge to have the plastic casing that houses our data be designed by a company like Pininfarina -- the same people who designed cars such as the Ferrari 575M Maranello, Jaguar XJ-S and Volvo C70. If, however, such design standards strike your fancy, SimpleTech is offering up some portable USB 2.0 drives that could do the trick.
