To date, using Google Assistant to control your lighting away from your phone has typically meant shopping for both a smart speaker and bulbs with a hub serving as a go-between, such as Philips' Hue line. You won't have to spend quite so much cash going forward, because GE has unveiled the first Made-for-Google lightbulbs, and they don't require a hub at all. It's updating its C by GE lineup to automatically pair with any Google Home speaker through Bluetooth and show up in the Home app, making Assistant control almost as simple as screwing in the lights.

Pixel Slate hands-on: Google’s 2-in-1 takes on the Surface

Google is cooking up a new formula for detachables, and it has an intriguing recipe with the new Pixel Slate. Though Microsoft has a solid desktop environment in Windows that makes its Surfaces excellent productivity tablets, it doesn't have the same library of touch-friendly apps that Android and iOS offer. The iPad Pro, on the other hand, is swimming in apps but just doesn't have the multitasking chops of a full desktop OS. Chrome OS seems like a potential opportunity to marry the best of Android, with its plethora of apps, with an established, functional desktop interface.

Yes, those leaks of Google making its own smart display were true. The company has unveiled the Home Hub, which melds an Assistant-equipped smart speaker with a 7-inch touchscreen display. As with other smart displays, you can use to both get visual feedback for searches (such as the weather or recipes) as well as finding photos and videos. However, it does have a few stand-out features of its own -- including things that are missing.

Looks like the leaks were right after all. In addition to announcing new flagship phones today, Google took the wraps off a new premium tablet called the Pixel Slate. It's a Chrome OS-powered slate with a 12.3-inch display that's supposed to be the sharpest in its class. Google claims this isn't just a laptop pretending to be a tablet or a phone pretending to be a computer.

Google's press conference is well underway in NYC, and the most important order of business is formally announcing the new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. To say we're already acquainted with the devices would be an understatement. Between our own early hands-on with the XL, the left-in-a-Lyft incident and many other leaks, we knew what we were in for: A pair of handsets that, on the hardware front, are not really designed to break to new ground, but to update the Pixel brand for 2018.

Verizon posts full Pixel 3 product page ahead of Google event

Did we say that we'd seen the last Pixel 3 leak ahead of Google's event? Sorry, we were mistaken. Our parent company Verizon prematurely posted (and promptly removed) a product page for the Pixel 3 line that confirmed a few key details mere hours before the October 9th media gathering. You're likely all too familiar with the Pixel 3 XL's deeply notched display and dual front cameras (one for wide-angle shots and one for close portraits), but the page also confirmed what many suspected about the Pixel Stand. It provides fast wireless charging (up to 10W), but it also turns your Pixel 3 into a makeshift smart speaker that can control your home with either voice control or "one-touch shortcuts."

Just about every major phone maker has already unveiled the latest and greatest for 2018 -- now it's Google's turn. We're coming to you live from the heart of Tribeca, where the search giant is gearing up to show off a pair of new, thoroughly well-leaked smartphones, plus its long-awaited Pixel Slate and some fancy new Home hardware. That's a lot of new gadgetry to squeeze into a single press conference, and that's just the stuff we know about; with any luck, Google has managed to keep some goodies under lock and key this whole time. If nothing else, though, we're looking forward to getting some hands-on time with the new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, especially after they've been so tantalizingly teased on Toronto's mass transit system.

I feel sorry for the people who are in charge of keeping Google's secrets. Truly, I do -- especially for the poor unfortunate soul who reportedly left their Pixel 3 XL in the back of a Lyft. But that means my peers and I know better what to expect at the company's Made By Google event in New York next week. Come October 9th at 11am ET, we'll see a bunch of new hardware from the company, and you can watch it all unfold here on Engadget, where we'll be liveblogging the event. For now, though, get ready for the gadget-palooza by reading up on what we already know and what we think we know.
