Why is the PlayStation Classic so unpopular?
Given the popularity of other nostalgic throwbacks like the NES and SNES Classic consoles, it's easy to see what Sony was trying to do when they released the PlayStation Classic in December. Devindra Hardawar even pointed out in his review that the system was "a quick attempt by Sony to cash in on the micro-console trend." While the Classic did have a decent look and feel, the 20 game selection was unlikely to satisfy fans, the controllers lacked DualShock and the inclusion of the PAL versions of some titles was baffling. These disappointments -- and an initial price point of $100 -- were enough to push the console's score down to 67.

If you missed our PlayStation Classic review back in December, here is the impression it left with editor Devindra Hardawar: He found the controllers cheap and the emulation inconsistent, concluding that overall it "feels like a mistake." Ouch. In the end we did not find PlayStation Classic to be a fun throwback or even a worthwhile purchase at all. Therefore, it was awarded a shin-kicking score of 67. And, given the reaction from the commenters on that review, a lot of you were disinclined to let the $100 system anywhere near your TV.
After Math: Gamer, set, match
Gaming enthusiasts had a lot to cheer for this week. Google revealed the results of a competition between its Starcraft II AI and a pair of pro players, though there wasn't much "competition" in the 10-1 bloodbath. GDC's State of the Industry survey revealed broad support for unionization initiatives among respondents. And of course Farming Simulator now has its own eSports league.
BleemSync is back to put a SNES in your Playstation Classic
Sony's PlayStation Classic is essentially an emulator in a mini PS1 shell. Of course, that means you can overcome its shortcomings (chiefly its lack of great games) by using hidden settings and hacks -- albeit at at your own risk. Which is where BleemSync, the go-to modding solution for the PS Classic, comes in. Though it's been around for a minute, BleemSync has now launched its official build, which should make it easier to use. With it you can add your own games to the retro console, run other console emulators (including the NES, SNES, GameBoy Advance, Genesis and the PSP) and get more save states, among other features.
PlayStation Classic review: A disappointing dose of nostalgia
The PlayStation Classic is a mistake. It's a quick attempt by Sony to cash in on the micro-console trend, something Nintendo kicked off with the NES and SNES Classic. (Sony didn't even try to differentiate the name from Nintendo's systems.) There's definitely room to improve upon the idea of a tiny retro console, but Sony simply didn't. What we're left with is a machine that has an odd collection of games and a problematic controller and, perhaps most damning of all, betrays the memory of the original PlayStation. Okay, maybe I'm being too dramatic. Younger gamers who didn't grow up with the PlayStation might find something to enjoy. It gives them a reason to explore the first generation of 3D titles, even if some are too ugly and awkward to play for very long. And at $100, it's an easy gift option. But it's hard not to be disappointed.
8BitDo adapter adds wireless controller support to PlayStation Classic
The PlayStation Classic, Sony's retro console that includes 20 PS1 games, arrived last week, and for those of us who prefer to play a little further away from the TV than wired controllers allow, a solution is on the way. Later this month, 8BitDo is releasing a USB adapter that lets you use its own wireless controllers with the console, along with Sony's DualShock 3 and 4, Bluetooth Xbox controllers, Switch Pro, Wii U Pro and even Joy-Cons.

PlayStation Classic's hidden settings are remarkably easy to find
It's no secret that Sony's PlayStation Classic is an emulator in a retro case. What you might not know, however, is that it's ridiculously easy to tinker with that emulator. The Retro Gaming Arts crew has discovered that you only need to plug in a compatible USB keyboard (Corsair and Logitech models are known to work) and hit the Escape key. No really, that's it. You can use multiple save states, tweak TV settings and otherwise play with features you're not normally meant to see.
Nike’s new PlayStation sneakers pay homage to Sony’s classic console
The first week of December couldn't get much better for PlayStation fans. On top of the launch of Sony's miniature PS Classic on December 3rd, Nike also has something in store for them in the next few days. On December 1st, the sportswear giant will launch the second edition of its PlayStation-themed signature basketball shoes, designed for NBA superstar Paul George. Like the original shoes from earlier this year, the new PG 2.5 x PlayStation are inspired by Sony's gaming console, but this pair takes all of its cues from the original PlayStation rather than the PS4.
Nike's latest PlayStation shoe celebrates a classic look
After turning gamers into hypebeasts with a PlayStation-themed Nike release earlier this year, Paul George debuted a console-themed version of his PG 2.5 sneaker in a game tonight against the Golden State Warriors. Appropriately timed near the release of the PlayStation Classic mini-console, this PG 2.5 X PlayStation pair pays homage to the original system with its original gray color plus a PS logo on the tongue of the left shoe. Alone, it doesn't quite match the cool factor of the DualShock-like PG2 PlayStation's light-up tongue, (these still light up) but it will still have the consistent flair even after its batteries wear out. Other PlayStation Nikes have focused on the Air Force 1, which saw a QuickStrike release last year at E3 (we doubt that will happen in 2019 for obvious reasons) after limited releases in 2006 and 2009. If you'd like to get a pair of these, keep an eye on Nike's SNKRS app and "select" retailers December 1st.

We'll never agree which games should be included with retro consoles
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. Comforting yet tantalizingly short-lived, nostalgia has an insidious allure that has long been weaponized by marketers to drive consumers toward purchases that they'd otherwise shun (or often regret immediately after). But, the impact of these associative memories may end up backfiring for Sony and the upcoming release of its PlayStation Classic retro console. Because for nostalgia to actually work, it usually helps if people remember the included titles.
Sony reveals the complete list of PlayStation Classic games
Sony has finally revealed the full game list for the PlayStation Classic, and it looks like it'll please fans looking for a nostalgia hit... mostly. In addition to previously announced games like Final Fantasy VII and Ridge Racer Type 4, you'll find definitive titles like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil Director's Cut and Twisted Metal. Simultaneously, though, there are a few curious choices and conspicuous omissions.
PlayStation Classic and original PlayStation, side by side
At the Tokyo Game Show Sony showed off its PlayStation Classic system for the first time in person. Engadget Japan editor Ei Ito said it wasn't playable so we don't know if this is just a mockup or the real thing, but it is sitting next to one of the original consoles that launched in 1994 so you can get an appreciation for the hardware design. Unfortunately Sony is still keeping quiet about the other 15 games it will pack-in, but a press release does note that the miniaturized console (45 percent smaller on the sides and 80 percent smaller in volume) will output video in 720p or 480p only, so it's likely that your TV will have more upscaling work to do.

With "Classic" game systems occasionally outselling modern ones, Sony is bringing back its own old school system. The PlayStation Classic will launch in December, loaded with 20 "generation-defining" games in their original format for $100 (€99.99 RRP). It's 45 percent smaller than the original system and uses a virtual memory card for saves. It will arrive with two PS1-era replica controllers from the time before analog sticks for local multiplayer and connect to modern TVs via HDMI-out, but you'll have to bring your own USB power adapter.
