Pantone offers color libraries for iPhone, mostly
While it's been in the App Store for the last few days, Pantone is officially launching its color discovery and management app for iPhone today, called myPANTONE. The Pantone Matching System, among other Pantone products, is the indispensable color system for printers and graphic designers, and it offers a wider gamut of color than traditional process color printing. myPANTONE lets iPhone and iPod touch users discover new and interesting Pantone color combinations, share them, and create palette files suitable for importing in desktop applications. You can start one of two ways: You can scrub through one of Pantone's color sets, including PMS coated, uncoated and matte colors, Goe, Pastels, and Fashion + Home. You can then drag individual chips into an area below the fanbook display, and build a palette of five colors. You can view each color full-screen, and add tags to colors, too. Alternatively, you can take a picture with your iPhone (or select an image from Pictures on your iPod touch) and build a palette from the colors in that image. myPANTONE exports HTML colors and .ase files (suitable for importing in Adobe CS products). You can also share palettes directly with other myPANTONE users nearby, and also upload them to the mypantone.com website (annoying sound warning), which is very similar to Adobe's Kuler (though it uses Pantone swatches, naturally). This is all well and good, of course, but for the technical color professional? Meh.
Nexon's Combat Arms launches today, tournament to follow at E for All Expo
Today marks the commercial launch of Nexon's newest title, Combat Arms, a free-to-play hybrid first person shooter/MMO. If the words 'free-to-play' make you cringe, have a look at the trailers on their main page, which show gameplay and customization options. You might just change your mind. While Combat Arms is heavier on the first person shooter end of the spectrum, the title has many of the elements we've come to like about MMOs -- rank rewards, in-game currency and massively multiplayer social aspects are all tied into the game. (Combat Arms has a cash economy called the "Black Market" but it's not necessary to purchase anything to play the game.) Be sure to check out Joystiq's hands-on with Combat Arms for a closer look at the title and a brief interview with Nexon about the game's features. Timed with the commercial launch of the title is Nexon's Combat Arms Tournament with Pandora's Mighty Soldiers (PMS Clan), to be held on October 4th at the E for All Expo. Pandora's Mighty Soldiers are said to be the world's largest multi-platform online female gaming group, with divisions for PC and each console on the market. If competitors can handle PMS, the tournament prizes will include Nexon game cards, t-shirts, DVDs, and an assortment of Razer gear. PMS will definitely make you work for it though.
MMO players convene after E3
Those of us heavily invested in massively multiplayer games are part of a community, just as FPS clans have a brotherhood borne out of hours of playing together. Events like BlizzCon provide an opportunity for MMO guilds and players to meet up -- for the unknown to meet the infamous.E3 may have been over, but that didn't stop NCsoft arranging a player get-together last Saturday. Over 400 players signed up, some travelling from as far as Arizona for this one evening. While NCsoft had rented out a LAN centre for the event, players spent just as much time talking as they did playing, with a sizeable contingent of developers and community managers on hand to help the event along. NCsoft celebrities including Richard Garriott and Matt "Positron" Miller attended the event, showing a pleasing commitment to the player base.
Overheard at E3: You're all nerds! [update 1]
For the "Women at E3" gathering today, a number of female industry professionals gathered to wear special "Girls FTW" shirts in a show of solidarity. Morgan Romine, aka Rhoulette of the Frag Dolls, led the crowd:Rhoulette: Who knows what "FTW" means?[Women cheer loudly]Rhoulette: Thank God! You're all nerds![Update 1: "FTW" means "for teh win".
