  • Create your own 'Star Wars' crawls, sonnets and Yoda speeches

Don't relish the thought of buying a $150 robotic BB-8 toy just to have some Star Wars-related fun? Don't worry, you won't have to spend a cent. A handful of websites have posted free tools that let you have fun with the sci-fi series' iconic language. The official Crawl Creator is arguably the highlight -- its simple editor turns your writing into the famous scrolling text you've seen in front of every Star Wars flick. There's also a Sonnet Generator that crafts Shakespearean Star Wars poetry from just a few questions. And yes, everyone's favorite centuries-old Jedi gets his due: plug text into the Yoda-Speak Generator and you'll get whatever you wrote in Yoda's distinct verb-follows-subject phrasing. These will only do so much to tide you over until The Force Awakens hits theaters, but they're definitely gentler on your bank account than the endless waves of merchandise hitting stores.

  • Google's digital art prize winner is a poem you control with your body

Google asked artists to prove that code could be beautiful with its DevArt competition, and hundreds delivered on that promise. However, there can only be one winner: The Metamorphosis of Mr. Kalia, a visual poem from Cyril Diagne and Béatrice Lartigue. The project lets you use your body movement to control Mr. Kalia as he undergoes strange, symbolic transformations throughout his life. Metamorphosis is using little more than a standard Kinect sensor to track your motion and send it to a Chrome browser, so it's easy to both play with and set up -- it even works over a basic internet connection.

  • EVE Evolved: Four great new EVE videos

If there's one thing the EVE Online community is well known for (apart from the occasional colossal scam or game-breaking exploit), it's producing great videos. In its nine-year history, EVE has birthed some very talented video editors who have produced everything from political propaganda and instructional videos to amazing cinematic stories and machinima. The official game trailers have always turned heads, but I'd bet a significant number of current players were first introduced to EVE through player-made works of art like Kyoko Sakoda's War Has Come or Mercenary Coalition's Lacrimosa Tortuga. It's easy to fixate on only the best EVE videos ever made, but in reality, dozens of new videos are released every month. Some are cinematic story pieces or alliance propaganda videos designed to motivate the troops, but most are just compilations of good PvP fights. While PvP videos are unlikely to grab the universal acclaim of incredible films like Clear Skies or Future Proof, they arguably show the very core of EVE at its best: good fights, solid strategy, and pretty explosions. In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at four great new EVE Online videos produced just in the past few months.

  • One Shots: Poetic

When it comes to MMOs, poetry may not immediately jump to mind -- unless, of course, you either really like poetry or are taking a poetry class. While we've gotten short stories to go with screenshots, this may well mark the first time we've gotten a poem to go along with one. That said, this particular poem isn't an original, but today's One Shots contributor, Matthew, obviously felt that it fit his mood and the mood of the Star Trek Online image that he sent in. Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half-light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet, Tread softly because you tread on my dreams -- W.B. Yeats If you're not poetic, no worries! We love to get screenshots from everyone -- lyrical poetry or limerick silliness are just a plus. Send in your image to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and your note. Please make sure your image is at least 1024px wide and has little to no visible UI in it. We'll post it out here and give you the credit for sending it in! %Gallery-85937%

  • Dante's Inferno special edition printing provides 'unique insight' into game's creation

These are dire times for ye olde book industry. Dire indeed. A special printing of Dante's Inferno -- like, the book -- hopes to capitalize on "the hottest game around." Due January 19 in book stores, this new edition from Del Rey (of the Random House empire) features an introduction by executive producer Jonathan Knight and 16 pages of colorful artwork from "the action adventure blockbuster that's rocking the video-game world." There's a 14th-century epic poem squeezed in there, too. Perhaps best used as a bargaining chip for kids desperate to convince their parents that they should be allowed to play a game based on a literary classic, however "mature" it might be, this damned tie-in is unlikely to ascend to the heavenly gates of the bestsellers list. Still, if Visceral Games' clone adaptation inspires even a single player to check out the original poem, then that would be a beautiful thing. Hell, it would be divine! %Gallery-82898%

With Valentines Day right around the corner, it would seem that everyone is looking for something to get their loved ones. While most might settle on candy, or other holiday items, would you ever think of writing your special someone a poem? Even if you've never written a sentence in your life, you can easily write a poem with Touch Poet [iTunes link] for iPhone.Touch Poet grabs word snippets from works by Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare, and Rudyard Kipling as well as Digg headlines and other news sources. When you tap on the right-pointing arrow in the app, words will be move out from behind the arrow. When you find a word that you want to use, you can drag it up to the top portion. The snippets of paper has a really great physics engine that makes it look as though you are actually touching it. If you don't like a word, or would like to choose a better word, then you can "throw" the piece of paper in the garbage shoot by tossing it towards the bottom right of the screen. If you can't seem to find a word that you like, you can input your own words by double-tapping on the bottom of the screen -- this will allow you to input your own word. If you tap the upward facing arrow you will have several options, namely the ability to select the source of your words. From here you can also Twitter your masterpiece or e-mail it straight to your loved one. You can get your hands on Touch Poet by visiting the iTunes App Store. It is currently on sale for $.99 (US) through Valentines Day; after then, it will go up to $2.99. %Gallery-44364%

  • DC shows off what look like Series 4 Figures at ComicCon

Empire magazine is already posting pictures from this weekend's ComicCon out in San Diego (WoW Insider also has correspondents there on site), and though they have no idea what they've stumbled across, it sure looks to us like what might be DC Unlimited's Series 4 WoW figurines. And rather than just the standard player characters, Blizzard and DC are going a little NPC for this series -- as you can see above, they've included everyone's favorite elite gnoll, Hogger himself. Also included in the series are a Succubus of some sort (with what looks like a Tauren with a polearm in the back there), and a gun-wielding Tauren Hunter. The figures all have signs that say "Worldwide Debut Friday 4pm" on them, so it looks like we're getting to see them a little early. And Blizzard is excited, too -- Slorkuz has even written a poetic ode to Hogger in honor of his likeness being immortalized. We'll keep an eye out for more info -- looks like DC is expanding their action figure line to include a few more less traditional character types. Who else should they honor with a figure in the future?

Sometimes writing about the DS is kind of surreal. Like when we get to make a gallery of preview images for a poetry book. We doubt the Xbox 360 Fanboy dudes are doing that right now. They're probably writing about games. In addition to being as subtly beautiful in presentation as we're sure the original poetry is, Enpitsu de Oku no Hosomichi now appeals to us in another sense: it includes free junk. As a limited bonus, Success is throwing in a pencil stylus. Because "Pencil (Enpitsu)"is right there in the name.%Gallery-3547%

  • The battle continues: firmware 3.30 decrypted

Once again, Team C+D has decrypted Sony's latest firmware. Although this doesn't provide anything tangible for end users, this is a crucial first step in creating new custom firmware. While the decryption was expected, the poem written by the team was not: 3.30 Decrypter! * From Team Create+Destroy.. * Some thought we failed - or had disappeared, But $ony beware - your last hour is near. In spite protections and multiple locks, In spite busy lifes and - unwashed - socks, For you to enjoy but for $ony to fear, 3.30 decrypter is ready, so cheer! Why do these people seem to hate Sony? They've made an impressive piece of hardware for us to enjoy, yet somehow that's seen as an evil thing? Regardless, 3.30 has been decrypted: feel free to celebrate/mourn in however way you choose.[Via DCEmu]

Harold Goldberg has rewritten the classic "The Night Before Christmas" poem to fit into the gaming lifestyle. We won't go into breaking it down grammar-wise and all that jazz because hey, it's Christmas. If any Joystiqers out there want to take a whack at rewriting a holiday classic that features any sort of video gaming slant, then have at it. If you're like us, you're back at home for the holidays and are finding a lot of free time on your hands. In meantime, have another cup of eggnog, some peppermint bark, and give Goldberg's version a whirl.

The DS Lite in Japan, a force highatop its mighty throne, which cannot fall, all others can do naught but look and sigh, their sales so impeded by strongest wall. For the Lite and the 'Two, arrows rise, yet the PSP sinks to the abyss, the downward red glare is blinding to eyes, so vastly clear that something's amiss. Wii will do well, if past numbers are true, the people are ready for a new sun to shine, and as Sony stumbles almost on cue,Nintendo steps up and gives us a sign.
