  • Clever iPhone app prevents calculator pR0n

A tweet earlier today pointed me to an iPhone calculator app that really got me laughing, as well as taking me on a trip down memory lane. When I was in high school, calculators were expensive (US$200 for a six-function calculator with memory, for example) and just starting to make it into the hands of students. In those more naive times, anything that could be construed as even mildly suggestive got a lot of chuckles. One of the more amusing pastimes was to perform certain calculations that would come up with a result like 5318008 or 3104558 which, when the calculator was turned upside down, would spell a "dirty word."Well, TLA Systems wants to make sure that its PCalc RPN [iTunes Link, US$9.99] and free PCalc Lite [iTunes Link] calculator apps for iPhone are used only for good purposes, so they've built in a special smut filter that will block these words when the calculator is turned upside down by displaying the word "CENSORED." Their blog entry is very tongue-in-cheek, asserting that they developed the filter to avoid getting a 17+ rating in the App Store. Personally, I think TLA Systems developer James Thomson is just brilliant at getting blogs to write about his products. Well done, James!Tip of the Tweet to @timhaines

  • XXX-Madden gag spoils kid's Xmas

On Christmas morning, little Kolton Mahoney tore away the wrapping paper on Uncle Dan's gift, ecstatic to find a copy of Madden 07. But it wasn't the familiar "It's in the game" mantra that greeted Kolton upon loading the game into the tray of his Xbox 360. Instead, an explicit image danced before his naked eyes.Confused, distraught, and perhaps overwhelmingly excited, Kolton ran to mommy and daddy, who quickly passed the concern over to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. "It wasn't a pretty scene," recounted Kolton's father. So far, the task force has been unable to track down the culprit of this cruel gag. The soiled Madden was apparently purchased by Uncle Dan on Dec. 2 from Circuit City. The disc is embossed with an official label and came factory-sealed in a standard game case.[Thanks, Chronos_777]

Quite often in iTunes, free TV shows appear later rather than earlier in the week. This week is no exception. For every one who has waited with bated breath for the free, premiere episode of My Bare Lady, it has finally arrived. The question on everyone's mind is, of course, can these American Porn Stars achieve critical success in London's West End as stage stars? Well, maybe that's not the question on everyone's mind, but it will do for now. See ya Tuesday for more free goodies. My Bare Lady: Cattle CallThings heat up when four American adult film stars are sent to London's most prestigious theatrical school to prove they can really act. These leading ladies are expected to each star in a classic piece of drama. When the curtain goes up, someone's going down.

  • Read comic books on your Nintendo DS

Joystiq's sister site DS Fanboy recently posted about a homebrew effort called Comic Book DS that lets you transfer comics from your computer and read them book-style with the DS flipped on end. You don't have to conceal issues of Action Comics underneath an old copy of Newsweek that you swiped off your dentist's waiting table on your commute any longer. Now people will think you're doing some serious work on your stylish PDA while you secretly use the touchscreen to pan and zoom on comic panels -- pure genius. Comic book fanboys can rid themselves of their secret shame. If you're wondering when pr0n will start appearing on your DS so it can catch up to the PSP, you either have to wait for the browser -- available only in Japan, or else check out the ... educational effort from Ubisoft's Heather Kelley. Will that thing support multiplayer? What are some real-life things you'd like to see migrate to your DS? Personally, we'd love a Checkbook Lite program to keep track of our finances, since the DS is so checkbook-ish looking already. Maybe even turn it into an RPG so we could level-up our savings. If someone made balancing finances fun, more people might actually do it. Final Fantasy XXXIV: Tax Time, here we come.[Thanks AF]

Forget the momentary lapse into 1337speak, but we're just easily exciteable. Good 'ol Matt Cassamassina has a wonderful four-minute session with the Wii, lovely fondling its every curve and crevice. It's quite detailed, and shows off everything you're ever wanted to see. You know. Under the flaps, places where eyes cannot regularly roam. Enjoy.[Thanks, Nmaster!]

It should come as no surprise that once a new product like the 24-inch iMac is introduced, the unpacking pr0n soon follows. These pictures hail from a .Mac user we know only as 'bigeyed' - yea, that's right: not a Flickr album. While there are obviously more attractive images in the set, I chose the one accompanying this post because of its sheer width; I can't think of another time we have seen an Apple keyboard swimming in so much styrofoam. While there isn't anything much else mind-blowing, check out bigeyed's gallery if you can't get your eyes on enough 24-inch iMac paraphernalia, and congrats to all the lucky new owners out there.[Update: here is a duggmirror link to the thumbnail pictures; unfortunately they don't have a way of mirroring the larger ones.]Thanks Glenn

  • Culver City to install filters on its municipal WiFi network

They call Los Angeles the City of Angels. We didn't find it to be that exactly -- particularly when much like anywhere else, folks are accustomed to downloading pr0n and tons of illicit materials on BitTorrent. Fortunately for us, upright citizens of Culver City, an LA suburb, will be installing Net filters (Audible Magic's CopySense Network Appliance, to be specific) on its free WiFi municipal network, which covers 10 square blocks in its downtown area. Sadly funnier still are the hacks at the MPAA who praised the move (but of course), saying that this new filter will "help safeguard system users from being subject to illegal files" -- as if somehow all of these "illegal files" just come raining down out of the sky on innocent folks wanting to read, say, Engadget. I'm not sure if these screenshots are breaking some NDA, but Flickr user Alex Patterson has posted a photoset of Leopard screenshots. They certainly help fuel the fire on a number of theories spawned from our tidbit roundup posts, such as Spotlight being a full-blown app. A few of the images are extreme closeups or slightly blurry, but overall it's a nice set of Leopard pr0n to keep the excitement going.

And now, time for some pr0n. The folks over at PowerMax just got an early shipment of one of those fancy new Mac Pros from Apple, so they naturally ripped open the box and gutted the computer. Looks like fun, but don't take our word for it, hit the read link to head on over and peep those hugemongous heatsinks for yourself.
