Quick note: if you can't figure out how to set your phone to vibrate during a tense White House press conference, at least learn to turn the damn thing off. Video after the break.P.S.- We're actually more amazed at the second guy, who not only interrupts the briefing, but walks out of the room to take the call. Cojones!

There's not much of a surprise in store now, seeing as we've already seen official photos of Amazon's newest iteration of its e-book reader (and gotten a handful of info on price and release date). Still, we'll be there liveblogging and blowing it out Engadget style come 10AM ET Monday morning -- and who knows, maybe Bezos will announce some other colors.

  • Amazon to host press event at library, innocently whistling when asked about the Kindle 2

It could mean anything that Amazon is hosting a press event Monday morning, February 9th at the Morgan Library here in New York City. Maybe they just want to talk about how much they enjoy huge archives of original manuscripts and the smell of aged paper. Whatever the case may be, the last time we went to an Amazon event, they ended up launching the Kindle, so it's not crazy to speculate that we very well could see the introduction of a new iteration of the successful e-book. We've pinged the company for more solid word, but it's been radio silence thus far. Of course, we'll be there live covering any news as it breaks, so just plan on being here... or being square.

Sure, you might've enjoyed the highs and lows (mostly highs) of Palm's Pre presser through the magic of written language in our liveblog of the event, but there's something about watching it unveiled in person by utterly enthused execs that can only be conveyed by video. Palm's got its own video of the event now live on its site, so grab your favorite Saturday hangover cure, pull up a recliner and start soaking up Palm's own special brand of RDF.Update: We've got the video embedded after the break.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

We've just gotten back from the Panasonic press conference at IFA, where the electronics giant unveiled a couple of interesting new products, including a new lineup of HDTVs, and the brand-spanking-new Lumix DMC-L10 DSLR camera. Here's a brief rundown of all the hot action that you missed, including an Olympics-esque runner dashing across the stage (all for show, folks).

Sharp has just wrapped a rather dry press conference at IFA, where it announced very little, but did rattle off a series of fairly benign and boring numbers (which we will spare you from). There were a few moments of excitement during the hour-long presentation, though mostly due to the thunderous bass of the company's sound and light show.

We're just back from the WiFi-less Samsung PR space here at IFA in Berlin, and the report may be less than thrilling to most of our readers. Nevertheless, here's a quick recap of the events. First up on stage was Dr. Jong Woo Park, president of Samsung, who didn't have much to offer in the way of groundbreaking news, though he did emphasize his company's dedication to "user experience" with their products.

At some point during the Jobsters lenghty unveiling of multifarious technologies today, iPhones across the nation were silently rejiggered (presumably by magical Apple wood-sprites) to allow for use of the just announced "Send to Web Gallery" feature. Whether this was a timed event scheduled into the new 1.0.1 update or an over-the-air transmission from Apple remains to be seen, but it is definitely true that the "fully integrated" web gallery upload option which Mr. Jobs demonstrated at today's press conference is currently available for use on your iPhone. Right now. This second.[Via TUAW, thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Notes from the BlizzCon press conference

Blizzard's J. Allen Brack, Frank Pierce, and Rob Pardo sat down in front of a small group of members of the press this morning to answer question about Blizzard's history, games, and outlook, and WoW Insider was there. In the hourlong chat, we covered Wrath of the Lich King, WoW's past, whether WoW should appear on a console or not, and what's going to happen to the old world. Just for you guys, I personally asked about Heroic Deadmines, midlevel content, and what they're going to do about those AFKers in Alterac Valley. My notes from the chat are after the jump. There were not one but two PR people hovering around the developers, so even they had to stop themselves from revealing secrets, but they did provide a lot of background and a lot of clarification about what players want to know about Wrath of the Lich King and Blizzard behind the scenes.

We're just going to say the editing by GameTrailers was done to spare you. We've shown you the face of a man after the Disney press conference, we even gave the thing an award for being so fantastically painful. Is it as bad as the Jamie Kennedy performance at the Activision press conference? Well, it's a different type of pain. Instead of feeling bad for the man on stage making a fool of himself, in this case you have to feel for the audience who definitely didn't sign up for what was incoming. Watch, enjoy, and remember that this is supposed to be a press conference -- not the halftime show at some Six Flags concert.

  • Games to be launched from within Home

At the Sony Press Conference today at E3, Phil Harrison demonstrated a feature that is new to Home. PS3 games will be able to be launched directly from inside Home, from both a Blu-Ray disc and from the hard drive. Reminding us that the feature we have been asking for for a while, Harrison stepped into a room with eleven other people in the virtual world. He then proceeded to invite them all into a game of Motorstorm, which booted straight from Home's PSP menu system into the multiplayer lobby, with all the people he invited ready to start. After crashing out, Harrison decided that he'd played enough Motorstorm for now and quit the game straight back into Home. This is a feature we're very excited about and we cannot wait to take full advantage of it once the open beta hits within the next couple of months.

We've made it fellow fanboys! Tonight is the night when the speculation comes to an end and all (if not most) of our unanswered questions get answers. In less than an hour Microsoft will begin their E3 press conference live from the Santa Monica High School amphitheater at 11:30PM eastern. We'll surely get to see some Xbox 360 games, peripherals and hopefully be in for a few "OMG!" surprises. And this year you're in luck, because you have unprecedented access to this insider's only event. Not only will you be able to keep track of MajorNelson's updated Twitter stream and watch the press conference live on G4 TV (coverage starts at 11:00PM eastern), but Joystiq and Engadget will be live blogging straight from the event! Also, if technical difficulties can be cleared up, our very own Richard and David just might be able to do some live blogging of their own here at X3F. Remember, the conference starts at 11:30PM eastern! And with less than an hour until the event begins, you have one final chance to share your opinion and predict what exciting news you think will come from Microsoft's E3 press conference. So fanboys, what are your predictions?

  • Is HTC's "major announcement" a multi-touch device?

    by
    Chris Ziegler

    05.30.2007

The plot is starting to thicken ahead of HTC's press conference on the fifth of June -- and as we suggested before, it appears that the company does indeed have its sights set on stealing some of Apple's thunder. As far as consumer electronics releases go, the crown for the month of June had pretty much been handed to the iPhone; yeah, pretty much any Apple release is considered something of a landmark event, but one of the iPhone's big draws is its support for multi-touch. So what if HTC were to announce its own multi-touch device -- based on the lovely Elf -- just days before the iPhone's release? A little deflating for Apple, yeah? Smartphone Thoughts is reporting that HTC plans to introduce said device at its June 5th event with the intention of releasing it quickly on a global scale. Microsoft was showing off its "Shift" touch-based interface not long ago; while we don't know that the rumored HTC device uses it, this could all work out very nicely indeed considering the cozy relationship Microsoft and HTC enjoy.

  • Socialtext holds WoW's first press conference

    12.13.2006

A while ago, we told you about Socialtext's plans to run a real-life press conference inside the virtual world of Azeroth (Goldshire, to be specific). The conference went down two Fridays ago on December 1st in Eitrigg (a lot of Socialtext's employees are members of Joi ito's We Know, the guild famous for bringing corporate networking into WoW), and now here's a story resulting from the conference. Unfortunately, the story reads pretty dry (and mentions Second Life more than WoW-- apparently they're the leader for corporate schmoozing and marketing inside virtual worlds), but fortunately, writer David Ho included a much less formal (and more interesting) writeup of what it was like to talk to a corporate rep playing a Pally wielding an Obsidian Edged Blade (does the CEO of Socialtext play a DPS-adin??).We have to give Ho credit-- he didn't just show up for the press conference as a level 1 gnome (that's what we would have done), he did his homework. He got a Night Elf to level 9 before being escorted to Stormwind and then the Twilight Grove in Duskwood. And we have to give it to CEO Ross Mayfield, too-- he held to his word of forcing those with questions to duel him before they were answered. What other press contact would be willing to fight the press to the death? Wait, scratch that-- probably all of them. The press conference itself sounds more gimmicky than anything. If Socialtext was trying to actually announce something (besides the fact that they were having a press conference in WoW), they weren't able to get their message across, so it's not too likely that more high profile companies will start using WoW as a marketing outlet. But someone's got to lead the way, and even though they're Alliance (they do have a Horde guild called We No, but no word if Mayfield also has a Shammy), kudos to them for bringing an old idea to a relatively new world.

  • Socialtext announces press conference inside WoW

    11.15.2006

MBAzeroth points us to what might be a first in the World of Warcraft: Socialtext, headed up by CEO Ross Mayfield (a.k.a. Kalevipoeg of We Know on Eitrigg-A) is planning to hold Azeroth's first ever press conference. On December 1st, 5pm server time in Goldshire, Socialtext is going to take questions from players in the game. About what, we have no idea, but considering that Second Life has been getting all the marketing attention lately, it's interesting to see a company trying to mesh the real world with WoW.If that's what they're doing, that is. Socialtext's site has no announcement about a December 1st press conference anywhere on their blog, and Mayfield's "announcement" of the conference includes more than a few jokes-- no ninjas allowed, "questions will only be taken from journalists in PVP mode," and a link to Project Azeroth (for those Hordies who might be a little confused by all the Common going around). I'm not quite convinced this is a serious commercial entry into Azeroth-- it could just be a dig at companies like Dell who "hold press conferences" in communities like Second Life without actually incorporating the community they're entering. The guys at We Know, umm, "know" Warcraft, and it could be they're suggesting holding a press conference isn't possible (especially not in Stormwind-- you should hold it somewhere fun like on a run through Deadmines, guys). But you never know-- the only way to be sure will be to log into Eitrigg on December 1st and see what you can find in Goldshire. Mayfield's announcement does promise "those that survive the experience will gain 1 gold piece and a Socialtext tabard" (whatever that is), so it could be a money-making opportunity for both parties, in the real and the virtual world.
