Daily iPad App: Supermagical provides polished fun
You've played games like Supermagical before. It's similar to Bubble Bobble or Snood, two games which have been seen multiple times on almost every platform, including iOS. But the key here is polish. Supermagical is a fun game that has you matching up colored balls that you fire across the screen. Just like the developer's previous release, Pro Zombie Soccer, the production value is very high. The game is tilted on its side, so instead of shooting up to the top, you're firing across the screen, and bouncing balls across the top and bottom. That simple change adds a lot. Supermagical's cute characters and colorful graphics go a long way as well, and spells, powerups, and special attacks make the game pop off of the screen. There are also extra goals, like completing a level in a certain time, and various items change the gameplay. Supermagical's core idea isn't new. If you've played Snood, you'll know how this all works. But it's well done, and more than worth the 99 cent price. Supermagical is available as a universal app right now.
Lots of free and discounted apps this pre-holiday weekend
Yes, Christmas isn't until next week, but around here, a free app is always welcome. Here's some apps that have gone free for this holiday season. The excellent match-3 Call of Atlantis is free this weekend. Chillingo's puzzle platformer NyxQuest is also free. Babo Crash is another match-3 title that's gone free. Pro Zombie Soccer, where you use a soccer ball to kill zombies, is free. Bejeweled is usually 99 cents, but you can get it for free thanks to a promotion on Apple's Facebook page. Gameloft's Asphalt 6 racer has gone free. And the great RPG Fara is now completely free as well. And there's some solid sales going on as well: Com2Us has most of its catalog on sale for 99 cents. Peggle and the HD version are down to just a buck each. Just in case you missed it on our Twitter account, Edge Extended is on sale for just 99 cents, while the original Edge is free. And EA is continuing its daily deals through the holidays with lots of free and discounted games inside their catalog. Lots of great games for cheap or free this weekend! Enjoy.
Chillingo shows off its current crop at E3 2010
I met up with Chillingo at last week's E3 event here in Los Angeles, and got to see a few of their upcoming titles in action. Here's a few games they were showing off, and some early impressions of each. Zombie Escape This was probably my favorite game of the show -- it's a line-drawing game where you're tasked with drawing routes for survivors of a zombie apocalypse to rescue choppers. As they appear on sides of the touchscreen, it's your job to draw a path through the walking undead, and as the 28 days in the game go by, the difficulty ramps up with more undead and more survivors. Additionally, there are powerups and other items to collect, which give the game some tower defense-style elements, enabling you to defeat the undead from offscreen. But sending your survivors to get the powerups means they'll have to take separate routes and risk more danger. Zombie Escape was about three weeks out from release when I saw it last week, so it should be on the App Store by the end of this month. It's definitely worth a look, especially if you're a fan of the line-drawing genre.
