  • PSP firmware 5.50 arrives to fulfill your every subfolder exploration need

There's a new PSP update in town, so hold onto your calloused thumbs. Firmware 5.50 borrows the PS3's XMB "Information Board" (pictured) for getting PlayStation and PlayStation Store news wherever you've got WiFi and a yearning, and there's also a games information search that works straight from the XMB as well. The update also brings the incredibly tardy ability to browse Memory Stick sub-folders for media, and Trend Micro Security and Safety for protecting the browser from malicious sites and protecting kids from adult content. It's not a landmark update, but it's something.[Via PSP Fanboy; thanks Allan M.]

Sony got a lot of things right with its 5.0 firmware update for the PSP, with the PlayStation Store and its direct downloads making a long awaited appearance, but it looks to have caused a bit of a problem for folks with high-capacity Memory Sticks -- namely, it was reporting that 8GB or 16GB cards are full when, in fact, there's plenty of free space left on 'em. Ever the one for a do-over, Sony now says that it's aware of the problem and that the 5.01 firmware update will sort everything out when it's released "soon."[Via PSP Fanboy]

Sony's official blog says PSP firmware 4.05, out now, contains "other features" in addition to a couple new music visualizers, but it's not clear what they are, apart from a slightly tweaked XMB animation if you've got a wallpaper set up. Go forth and download -- let us know if there's anything earth-shattering in there, won't you?[Via Joystiq]

  • PSP firmware 4.00 due "soon," adds Google search to XMB

There's no indication of an exact release date just yet, but word just dropped on the official PlayStation blog that the PSP will be getting a boost to firmware version 4.00 "soon." That'll bring with it the addition of Google search directly form the XMB interface, which Sony says "replicates the Google Internet search experience." Apart from that somewhat notable upgrade, the only other new feature they're talking about at the moment is the ability to change the viewing speed during playback of videos stored on a Memory Stick. Not exactly the upgrade we would have guessed for a milestone like 4.00, but we can always hope Sony has a couple of surprises up its sleeve.

OK, Mr. Big Shot, so you already knew about the new, DivX-sporting PS3 firmware 2.1 going live today. But that's only because you read Joystiq. Never forget: We gave you that knowledge, and we can take it away. ... OK, so we can't do that. But we're working on it.Perhaps a little more of a surprise for fans of Sony's small screen is the news that PSP firmware 3.80 has also appeared for you to download and enjoy. Most significant in this update is the new Internet Radio feature, which Sony says provides access to thousands of stations. The set-up instructions are pretty specific though, you can check them out after the jump.Read - PSP Firmware 3.80 is liveRead - Firmware update (v2.10)

Welcome, new PSP-2000 owners to the wonderful world of PSP firmware upgrades. For the uninitiated, these are incremental improvements to the PSP's brain that are supposedly to make the system better, but really just make life more difficult for hackers trying to put homebrew software on their systems. The improvements for 3.70 include: You can now set custom themes in [Theme Settings] under [Settings]. Support has been added for assigning buttons in [Remote Play]. A scene search feature has been added under [Video]. Sequential playback is now supported under [Video]. Simultaneous playback of content under [Music] and [Photo] is now supported. ...Huh, well, those actually aren't bad, especially now that we can listen to "Friends Forever" while we watch the slideshow that consists of only this picture. Commencing download!

  • Downloadable PSP games in the works?

It looks like (legally) downloadable PSP games could maybe, possibly be getting ever so slightly closer to reality, as a Sony-made ISO loader has reportedly been discovered in the latest firmware update for the handheld. The current speculation is that the loader, discovered by the prolific Dark_Alex, gives the handheld the ability to load encrypted ISO images off a memory stick, not just the demos and PS1 games the handheld's currently capable of playing. That would, of course, open up the possibility of Sony selling games sans-UMD, which has long been near the top of the wishlist for PSP owners and would-be PSP owners alike. Then again, it could be something entirely less exciting, so we'll just have to wait for Sony to play its hand.[Via Joystiq]

  • PSP firmware 3.50 enables full 333MHz clockspeed

It may not be the long-rumored PSP redesign, but if you've got a PSP, it underwent a secret upgrade last month when you installed firmware 3.50. Sure, Remote Play is nice, but what you'd really like is a PSP that's instantly 25% faster. We're not talking about fancy new UMD drives, or faster processors; it's the same old PSP but Sony's uncapped the existing processor from 266MHz to 333MHz.Sony has confirmed to Shacknews that developers working on games currently in development (your existing games aren't going to run faster) now have access to the full CPU speed of the post-3.50 PSP. The clock speed was believed to have been limited previously to conserve battery power, leading to obvious speculation that this change would be made possible by a newly redesigned PSP, replete with increased battery life. If that's the case, what about these new 333MHz games running on our old battery-addicted PSPs?[Via PSP Fanboy]

Pornography addicts, rejoice! No longer is your extensive collection of graphic pornography shackled to your 1.80 PS3, as the new 3.50 firmware for the PSP has upgraded the Remote Play feature to work over the internet. Now, anytime you're near a WiFi connection and the need for pornography (or, we guess, any other sort of movie) strikes, you can browse your PS3's hard drive and, you know, embrace your carnal urges.Oh, and RSS Channel Guide has been added as a feature under RSS Channel. So, there's that too.

  • PSP firmware cracked wide open by Grand Theft Auto ... again

An old skeleton from the PSP closet has come back to haunt Sony as their 2.81 lockdown has come to an end thanks to the ongoing efforts of the PSP homebrew community. Famed PSP hacker Fanjita has taught an old crack a new trick as the Grand Theft Auto saved game exploit has once again brought Sony's PSP security measures to its knees, enabling any and all firmware versions to run homebrew applications. That's odd. We thought they squashed that bug a long time ago. According to Fanjita, Sony didn't quite bring their A-game when it came to stopping their unruly fan base. It's not all sunshine and unicorns for those itching to tear apart the coding that holds their PSP together. The brave will need an original copy of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (later copies were updated to prevent this trick from resurfacing) and nerves of steel. An "easy mode" downgrader isn't available yet, but the wait should give you enough time to scrounge up a stack of PS One games to stick in there.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

Our PSP-obsessed friends at PSP Fanboy spend their nights alone, checking the PSP's Network Update functionality constantly, hoping for some new firmware code to drop. Their eyes glaze over and the process becomes a primal ritual, their calloused thumbs repeating the strokes from memory. Last night, like last month, their efforts were rewarded by more than a simple security patch, but a full-blown dot-oh release: 3.0. Included in this milestone update are: PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game]. [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network]. [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network]. Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel]. A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music] (see PSP Fanboy's video). 3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music]. [Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo]. [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings]. The PSP Fanboys have also uploaded the EBOOT installer so, in case you don't have Wi-Fi for your PSP, hit them up for the file. We're updating right now (au revoir homebrew capable PSP, we hardly knew ye we knew ye very well) and we'll let you know how the anticipated -- albeit slightly delayed -- PS3 interaction works.

Sony has released its new PSP firmware 2.80 update today. You can download it using the Network Update feature in your PSP.When updating, the firmware reads it contains the following features: You can now download video and image content under [RSS Channel]; You can now register devices via a wireless LAN access point under [LocationFree Player]; You can now play AAC files with file extension .3gp under [Music]; and You can now play content saved in "Music," "Picture" and "Video" folders on a Memory Stick. (Apparently, this means you don't have to rename video files, and you can play them without using special folders.) Sony recently announced its plans for the new upgrade at Comic-Con. It will be interesting to see in the coming days whether Sony has addressed any of the recent breakthroughs in the homebrew scene.[update 1: Fixed a misspelled word and hopefully clarified the post a bit.][Thanks Chris]
