The next time you watch a big blockbuster sci-fi film like Alien: Covenant, you can thank the original pulp magazines. The written form of the popular genre got its start in comic book-sized magazines like Amazing Stories, Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy Science Fiction, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. These publications, under the direction of influential editors like John W. Campbell, Jr., helped improve the genre from basic adventure stories to more thoughtful, well-written speculative fiction by authors like Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke. It's not an overstatement to say that these magazines created the current science fiction craze. Now, Galaxy Science Fiction, a magazine that published Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" and Alfred Bester's "The Demolished Man," is available for free online.

British comedy Pulp will be the first film exclusively distributed on Xbox 360. Pulp stars Jay Sutherland as Tony, a comic artist recruited by the police to help take down a group of no-goods funneling ill-gotten cash through a dummy comic book company. Pulp is available right now for 1180 MS Points ($14.75) in standard definition, 1420 MS Points ($17.75) for high-definition.Late last year, Microsoft brought on former CBS exec Nancy Tellem to oversee the creation of original video content for the Xbox brand. While Pulp wasn't expressly made for distribution on the Xbox platform, it's the first sign that we'll be seeing more video content exclusive to Xbox from here on out.

Ah, exclusivity. Typically the domain of movie theaters and premium cable subscriptions, now everyone's giving it a go. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is also joining the fray and has launched Pulp, a British indie comedy. The movie has already been shortlisted at several respectable film festivals but creator Adam Hamdy, citing the high costs of marketing lesser-known films, said that a different approach was needed to get Pulp in front of audiences -- something that those 77 million Xbox 360 owners should be able to help with. Microsoft added that this won't be the only movie to debut on the Xbox Live's Video app, although it hasn't detailed how many more exclusives its salt-and-pepper console is likely to see.

  • Mac, iOS developer Acrylic joins Facebook design team

Sparrow isn't the only big Mac developer that's switched to a high profile project today. Mac and iOS shop Acrylic has been called away from its own projects, including the apps Pulp and Wallet, by Facebook. The company doesn't say exactly what they'll be working on, but presumably it'll be the Mac and iOS interfaces for the popular social network (which, let's be honest, can use all the help they can get). Acrylic's Dustin MacDonald says the matchup "was a natural fit." Facebook hasn't acquired any of Acrylic's projects, and those will remain available for download. Acrylic says it will post news of any updates or other work on its official blog, but helping design Facebook is probably a full-time job. Just like Sparrow, we're sorry to see a really great Mac/iOS developer move on from the projects we know and love, but we're also excited to see what work they can do on a bigger stage.
