Given that it's actually Hallowe'en today, this is an incredibly appropriate piece to be doing rather well on Reddit. It's an amazing pumpkin carving of a Cloud Serpent, that's caught the attention of many Blizzard people, and with good reason! It might not be totally clear unless you look at the picture at the bottom right of the header, then progress back through them, but the detail on this is just stunning. I am blown away by the pumpkin carving that people do every year, and this one really takes the cake. The use of varying depths of carving to create the detail of the scales, the faded-out saddle, and the bright glow of the eyes and the fire the dragon is breathing just blow me away -- it's all I can do to cut two eyes and a mouth! You should definitely hit up the Imgur to see the rest of the pumpkin, even the less interesting sides are amazing. And if remarkable pumpkin carving is your thing, Blizzard's contest is a must-see. Some of the things people create just blow my mind. And whoever carved this Cloud Serpent pumpkin should definitely enter the contest!

We may not have held a pumpkin carving contest this year, but that didn't stop Joystiq pun'kin' veteran Dennis C. from creating a hauntingly gorgeous gourd for us all to gaze upon. Recreating two of the most nerve-racking scenes from Limbo's forest area, this carved masterpiece serves as an example of just how impressively captivating a hollowed out dead thing can be when given to the right artist.%Gallery-137923%

When planning a fun way to celebrate the fall season, we believe the early settlers tried a variety of creative, yet failed, traditions: Asparagus-eating contests The entire town acting out Hamlet at the same time, with their own grandfathers' skulls playing the part of Yorick Jumping off a 60-foot cliff into a pile of dead leaves Grave-robbing (that one stuck, but it became year-round and highly lucrative in a non-spiritual way) Eggplant, leek, corn and lentil carving Most of these died out with the maypole, but that last one may have led us to the modern fascination with pumpkin carving, which has now led us to these beautiful video-game-inspired pumpkins from ceemdee. This year's pumpkins feature Bastion, Doom 2, The Dig, Worms, Oregon Trail, Outlaws and Magicka. Apparently ceemdee has been doing this since 2009, and the squashy backlog is just as impressive.

  • Pumpkin contest winners for Final Fantasy XI

As Halloween fades into a memory of candy, costumes, and cheaply-made outdoor decorations, the MMOsphere slowly closes its doors on the various holiday events. Final Fantasy XI's pumpkin-carving contest on Allakhazam has finally drawn to a close, with the votes in and tallied and the winners determined. And if you doubt that there's a great deal of talent and originality on display with the contest, the excellently-rendered San d'Orian knight charging into battle above wasn't the winner -- they placed fourth. Third place went to a rendition of the title image for this year's Halloween event, while second place went to Final Fantasy XI's resident mad professor herself. First place went -- quite deservedly -- to this hauntingly well-rendered image of a tonberry in the darkness. The official announcement includes a tally of the votes, but that might not be quite as exciting to casual observers as a gallery of all the entries. Congratulations to the winners, and here's hoping that next year brings still more pumpkin-carving fun for FFXI.

Hallow's End is almost upon us, and Blizzard has once again announced their annual pumpkin carving contest. This is always a hoot -- I was only ever able to do the usual jack-o-lantern (once I did a Batman symbol, but it never really worked out), but there are always some real professionals in the mix on these contests, as you can see in the gallery below. Basically, carve a pumpkin featuring something Blizzard-related, showing "high levels of originality, craftsmanship, and possibly humor," light it up with a candle or other source, and then submit a picture over on the site by two weeks from today, Wednesday, October 28th.And some nice prizes this year: the top five submissions will all pick up a nice 32gb iPod touch, apparently supplied by none other than Apple (and of course you'll be able to run those Blizzard mobile apps if you win). Good luck to everyone who enters -- go grab your knife and the biggest "gourd-like squash" you can find and get to carving!%Gallery-75579%

  • Blizzard's 2008 pumpkin carving contest winners announced

Blizzard's annual pumpkin carving contest has come to a close and the winners have been announced. I gotta say, some of them look incredible. The sheer amount of detail these people are able to pack into a pumpkin is pretty mind blowing. Like I mentioned when we displayed the Ghostcrawler pumpkin here, I'm barely capable of cutting big triangle eyes. My oafish hands would scream in horror if someone asked me to do something like these carvings. I wonder if the people who did these carvings are the sort that do it professionally for various holiday events. If not, they should be.The winners of the contest were each awarded a Logitech G51 Surround Sound Speaker System. That rig retails for about $200, so that's not a bad deal at all. Since I don't even currently own speakers and use a pair of $15 headphones, I'm a little jealous. Maybe I'll go out and buy some speakers soon. Not a $200 set, but speakers nonetheless.

As we bid adieu to Hallow's End, I would like to take a moment to look back at some of the events we enjoyed during these few short weeks. We tricked, we treated, we slew a dead guy on a horse with a really creepy laugh. Ah, good times. With pumpkin carving still on our minds, I present to you a Snacky's Journal moviewatch, only this one is completely devoid of Snacky or his overly boisterous Night Elf friend. It's a Hallow's End special, starring my personal favorite character from the series, Roberto. NSFW: There's a reference or two in here that might offend the kiddies, or the stodgier guys in your cubicle. Previously on Moviewatch...

  • Two new contests!

Blizzard has presented US players with two new Halloween-themed contests -- a pumpkin-carving contest and a costume contest. Each contest covers all of Blizzard's games, with prizes awarded for entries with a Starcraft, Warcraft, or Diablo theme. And both contests have been done before -- this marking the 4th year of pumpkin and the 3rd year of the costume contest. The rewards are not astounding (a copy of WoW and the board game for the pumpkin-carving contest, and a copy of WoW with a years' subscription for the costume contest), but the contests sound fun, nevertheless.
