Now that media outlets have handed out awards to blockbuster games, it's time for the indies to shine. The Independent Games Festival has posted the finalists for its main competition's 2017 awards, and there are a few competitors who clearly stand out from the pack. Both the retro hack-and-slasher Hyper Light Drifter and bleak side-scroller Inside are nominated not only for the Seumas McNally grand prize, but also the audio and visual design awards. Other titles receiving multiple nods will definitely sound familiar if you've been following the scene, including the hacking-themed puzzler Quadrilateral Cowboy and the chaotic food hit Overcooked.

Quadrilateral Cowboy has been a long time coming. Developer Brendon Chung, creator of the underground hit Thirty Flights of Loving, began working on Quadrilateral Cowboy in 2012 and he showed off an early version of the game in 2013. It's a blocky, first-person espionage game set in the 1980s that has players actually hack their way through various levels, typing in lines of code to disengage alarms, open doors and generally sneak around. The independent-gaming crowd ate it up and Chung said it would be out within six months. He was off by nearly three years. Quadrilateral Cowboy will hit PC via Steam and Blendo Games on July 25th, and it's due to land on Mac and Linux in September. Chung announced the release date today on Twitter.

Game developer Brendon Chung is an easygoing guy when it comes to the creative process. He doesn't make elaborate plans regarding the scope of his projects; instead he goes wherever the flow takes him. It's been working out for him: His completed games -- namely, Gravity Bone and Thirty Flights of Loving -- are quirky experiences heralded for their punchy, emotive narratives, and they each took about six months to complete. Chung assumed his latest game, Quadrilateral Cowboy, would take roughly the same amount of time. That was in 2012. "This game has been six months away from completion for about three years now," Chung says.
