Droid RAZR HD lands on the bench, shows off Snapdragon S4 in continued striptease
Sometimes it can feel like you're being sold a book one page at a time. The latest in the Droid RAZR HD's story comes via some benchmarks. A NenaMark2 report clearly shows what claims to be the Verizon phone with a Qualcomm Adreno 225 GPU. Not the most exciting plot twist, but this does, by association, reveal that it's a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 running the show, as rumors have been suggesting. The resolution (1196 x 720) and Android version (4.0.4) also got an outing, with an overall score on the test of 59.1. Ready for the next chapter? We guess we'll just have to wait.
Qualcomm hires former AMD CTO, makes 'em pay for dropping mobile
Qualcomm is hiring AMD's former CTO Eric Demers to help the company produce a blockbuster mobile graphics chip. It needs the silicon for its big push for smartphone dominance (and tablets running Windows RT) in the face of strong competition from Imagination Technologies' Series 6 PowerVR and NVIDIA's Tegra 3. Demers' first job will be to merge Qualcomm's in-house Adreno team with ATI's Imageon mobile graphics chip team, which AMD flogged off for $65 million back in 2009 -- a move Sunnyvale is probably regretting now that it too is trying to get its hardware into mobile devices, unless it included a do-over clause in the sales contract.
HTC Shooter appears for Sprint with Android 2.3.2, qHD screen and dual-core CPU?
We still haven't heard what happened to the HTC Glacier, but the GLBenchmark database brings word of another mysterious high-end phone from Taiwan -- the HTC Shooter, which is very likely equipped with a dual-core Qualcomm processor. The "PG86100" certainly identifies itself as carrying a speedy new Adreno 220 GPU, which is typically paired with twin processing units, and should help push plenty of pixels to the 960 x 540 screen that's presently displaying Android Gingerbread 2.3.2. All in all, it sounds a lot like the rumored HTC Pyramid for T-Mobile -- except this one's apparently destined for Sprint. Could it be the EVO 3D, or something wholly different? We'll likely find out next week at CTIA 2011. Update: The HTC Glacier actually reappeared as the T-Mobile myTouch 4G -- that second-gen 1GHz Snapdragon CPU (at a time when other handsets ran the same Scorpion core at 800MHz) was responsible for the high scores we saw. Qualcomm unveils dual-core Snapdragon reference handset at CES 2011
NVIDIA's Tegra 2 was tearing it up on the CES 2011 show floor in a host of new tablets, but unbeknownst to us, Qualcomm's long-awaited dual-core Snapdragon made a pair of cameo appearances as well. The first was in ASUS' Eee Pad MeMO, which showed off its pressure-sensitive stylus action on the floor, and the second is in the new Qualcomm reference design you see immediately above. According to a video released on Qualcomm's website -- which you can watch after the break -- Qualcomm attempted to distract tech journalists from Verizon's press conference by giving them a sneak peek at the HTC Thunderbolt here instead. Then, we like to imagine, the company brainwashed the lot into believing the 1.2GHz MSM8660 with Adreno 220 graphics is destined for a host of tablets and phones. Of course, if that's actually the case, we'll gladly join the throng. Where do we sign up?
Qualcomm teases 28nm dual-core Snapdragons, pixel-punching Adreno 300 GPU
By the time Qualcomm's 1.5GHz QSD8672 Snapdragon finally makes it to market, it might be obsolete -- the company just announced that the new 28nm dual-core MSM8960 system-on-a-chip will have five times the performance and consume 75 percent less power than the original Snapdragon when it arrives in 2011. It's got the usual WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and FM radio modules but also a multi-mode LTE / 3G modem too, and reportedly four times the graphical muscle on board. Speaking of graphics, Qualcomm separately took the time to detail a new GPU: the Qualcomm Adreno 300 series, which will allegedly offer the gaming performance of an Xbox 360 or PS3. We'd say "We'll believe it when we see it," but that would imply doubt -- the reality is that we just want to feast our eyes on mobile gaming bliss as soon as humanly possible. [Thanks, PhineasJW]
