Seibu Kaihatsu's Raiden shoot-'em-up series will return on the Xbox One, a teaser trailer shown at Microsoft's TGS booth revealed this week. Tracing its origins back to the 1990 release of Raiden in arcades, the vertically scrolling series saw multiple ports and releases across 16- and 32-bit consoles. Arcade-born series predecessors Raiden 4 and Raiden Fighters Aces made appearances on the Xbox 360, and the upgraded Raiden 4: Overkill was revealed for the PlayStation 3 earlier this year. Mortal Kombat series creator Ed Boon had a special treat for fans at this year's EVO event; the return of Raiden in Mortal Kombat X. According to an interview between Boon and IGN, the infamous thunder god will be screaming gibberish at his opponents in three distinct styles, tentatively being called "Displacer," "Storm Lord" and "Thunder God" respectively. Displacer style will focus heavily on teleportation, while Thunder God will empower Raiden's electrocution moveset. Storm Lord will help players control large portions of the stage, as it allows Raiden to set lightning ball traps which hang in the air and form a stream of lightning once two of them have been placed. You can see Raiden in action by checking out the trailer above, where he and Kotal Khan stare each other down before Raiden offers up this gem of a burn: "Thunder blots out the sun." Which isn't ... uh ... correct. Well, no one ever said he was the smartest god. [Image: Warner Bros.]

Raiden's cybernetic digs from Metal Gear Solid 4 will be available as a day-one dose of downloadable nostalgic costume content for both Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Konami has announced. The suit, originally revealed as a Japanese promotional/pre-order bonus early last month, will cost $1.99 when the game launches this Tuesday, February 19.Costumes based on the Metal Gear mythos are becoming somewhat of a theme, as a Grey Fox/Cyborg Ninja costume is also available to those who pre-order Rising at GameStop. Personally, we think the game could benefit from the addition of Raiden's Metal Gear Solid 2 suits, both "Sneaking" and "Birthday."

  • Kojima originally envisioned Gray Fox as the star of Metal Gear Rising

Hideo Kojima's transition from game designer to game producer is one steeped in compromise, the Metal Gear mogul explained during a recent interview with IGN. Specifically, Kojima would have preferred that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance star series mainstay cyborg ninja Gray Fox, rather than Raiden."It was my staff in Kojima Productions that insisted on Raiden, and I respected their idea," Kojima said. "In my personal opinion, I wanted to go for Frank Jaegar or Gray Fox. But if we had gone with that, I would have had to write the script and then be really committed to creating the game."In the end, passing the torch of crafting Metal Gear's universe to the next generation of developers was of greater importance than ensuring Gray Fox as the star. "I want to pass game development to the younger generation in my team, and have been trying to do so for quite some time. Before I never could give complete responsibilities for other games, but for Revengeance, they are fully in control. Besides, if I had created the game and directed it, it wouldn't have been this game."

This is Portabliss, a column about downloadable games that can be played on the go. You can't beat a good shmup, and easily one of my favorite series is Raiden. I fondly recall playing Maverick to my dad's Goose for so many hours on the PlayStation port as a kid. With great relish I accepted the challenge of trying Raiden Legacy on my iPad.%Gallery-173164%

Raiden from the Metal Gear Solid series is officially in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Lead game designer Seth Killian shows off Raiden in a video on Gamespot.Raiden's strength lies in one-on-one attacks and air combos, and his level 3 super involves trapping all of the other players under boxes for easy pickings. Characters in All-Stars generally have about two dozen moves, but with his combo chains, Raiden has three or four dozen, Killian says.We first heard rumblings about Raiden in All-Stars back in July, alongside a major character leak.Update: We've added the official trailer showing off Raiden's slick moves, just up there.

It takes over a minute and a half for Raiden to pull out his sword in this new Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance trailer released tonight ahead of E3 2012. But once he does, it's definitely worth the wait. Raiden's return will be playable during E3 next week, and we'll be there to take his blades for a spin.

Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Rising is now Platinum Game's Metal Gear Rising: Reveangeance, just as we were lead to believe by the trailer that leaked earlier today. Raiden, apparently channeling his unstoppable child soldier roots, has gone fully cyborg ninja in order to hack, slash and grotesquely dismember every single thing that exists. We're not going to lie, the idea of taking a RAY model Metal Gear head on with a robotic lightning sword makes us tingle in very specific, covert places.

After listings were spotted on both GameFly and Amazon, the North American release of Raiden Fighters Aces has been made official by Valcon Games. You may recognize the company as the publisher of Totally Spies! Totally Party! for the Wii. No? How about Ski-Doo Snowmobile Challenge for the Xbox 360 and PS3? Still no? Never mind then. The point is that Valcon will be bringing Raiden Fighters Aces -- a compilation of all three games in the Raiden Fighters series -- to North America, thus ensuring that Japanese gamers don't have all the fun. There is no official release date, though both Amazon and GameStop point to an April release and a $29.99 price tag.[Via Siliconera]

"It is a matter of life and death, a road to game over or to win!"Ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, which kicks off tomorrow in Beijing, homebrew developer Anti-Social Gaming has put out a polemic game titled Olympic Battlefields.Unlike Mario and Sonic's Olympic outing, however, you won't jump into any traditional events to win the gold for their respective franchises. Rather, you'll pick from one of four countries to represent their tacit agendas and "fight terrorism."For instance, if you choose the Tibetans, you'll be tasked with dragging Chinese people out of your country before they "turn militant." If you decide to side with China, you'll need to tap the "revolting Tibetans" and turn them into farmers, otherwise "they'll suicide bomb." Also, for some reason, the Chinese farmers and terrorist Tibetans look like Raiden and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. If that isn't controversial enough, you have the option of playing as Israelis or Palestinians, too. On the Palestinian side, you'll be charged with converting Jews to Islam by dragging them off the map. If you play as the Israelis, you will have to tap and convert Hamas terrorists into Jews. Again, if you don't neutralize them in time, they blow up!Looks like RanAway and In the Afternoon Sunshine have some serious competition now when it comes to the most offensive homebrew DS game.%Gallery-29236%[Via DCEmu]

The character creation tools of Soulcalibur IV look to be rather robust. Kotaku's CB has created facsimiles of our favorite Metal Gear Solid characters, Snake and Raiden, using the in-game system. While not 100% spot-on, these renders do add a distinct Metal Gear flair to the classic fighter. Seeing these two fighting on the Death Star with Soulcalibur weapons ... well, that's the kind of stuff fanfics are made of.[Thanks, Gambit07!]

This article contains enormous spoilers, just so you know. Playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty again, after all these years, has had an interesting effect on my opinion of it. Which is to say, I actually like it now. I'm tempted to compare it to a maturing, fine wine, a substance I'm sure was heavily consumed during the game's development, but the truth is that Sons of Liberty remains every bit the unhinged and convoluted mess I remember it to be. A mess that, with patience and even the slightest idea of what you're getting yourself into, becomes considerably easier to navigate. Wait ... does that make me the wine?

  • Upcoming MMO movies (and why they'll suck)

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/pc_games/Upcoming_MMO_movies_and_why_they_ll_suck'; Dorothy Parker once said "The only 'ism' Hollywood believes in is plagiarism." While not technically plagiarism, the practice of mining popular properties of other media is a time-honored mainstay of Hollywood's. Why invent a new franchise when you can adapt one that already exists? Well, if we're talking about translating videogames to cinema, there are at least 3 reasons against that we can think of right away: Street Fighter: The Movie, Double Dragon, and Doom. Oh, and the entire body of work of Uwe Boll. With such a history of failure, why does Hollywood keep banking on videogames as good sources of material? Because it's always desperate for the next big hit, and adaptation is seen as being easier than originality, even though by now it's apparent that it's not quite as simple as it seems. An even better question is: why exactly don't these translations work? What is it about games that makes for poor films? Let's see if we can answer this question and assess the potential success/failure of some upcoming MMO movies.

  • Raiden Fighters Aces demo hits Japan

In actuality, the headline above should read "Raiden Fighter Aces demo hits any Xbox 360 with a Japanese Xbox Live account." Unfortunately, that headline lacks pizazz, and we're all about pizazz around here. At any rate, the point is that there's a Raiden Fighters Aces demo up on Xbox Live Marketplace for those keen on finding it. The demo gives players a crack at all three Raiden titles in the compilation (Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighters II, and Raiden Fighters Jet). It also settles the question of whether the title is a retail title or an XBLA release (hint: it's retail). Now we have a new question: will gamers be willing to shell out retail price for a compilation of ten-year-old arcade games. Hopefully Raiden Fighters Aces will debut at a budget price.
