  • iPhone 5th anniversary: I stood in line all day for an iPhone and I also got this lousy t-shirt

Five years ago today, on June 29, 2007, I spent the entire day sitting in front of the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colorado. My mission? To be one of the first people to own an iPhone. I got the iPhone, and also a little souvenir that fortuitously appeared in my dresser this morning. I remember getting to the store shortly after 7 AM and being surprised by the length of the line already. About eighty people had made it into the line ahead of me, so not knowing what Apple's plans were for the new device, I was worried that I wasn't going to get one. I had my trusty Palm Treo 680 with me, and my major concern was that I was going to have to shut down my T-Mobile service. It was hot in the morning, as the front of the store faces east and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Many of us in line became friends as the day wore on, holding places while people skipped away to get food and beverages, go to the bathroom, or just alleviate boredom by going somewhere else. Looking back, Apple wasn't very prepared. Unlike today, when an iPhone line usually means that you're going to get a few free bottles of water and/or a muffin, I don't believe they handed out anything. However, there was a company (FastMac) that apparently saw something in this phone that Apple was creating, and they were handing out the t-shirts you see in the image above. I didn't even remember having that t-shirt, and by some quirk of fate it bubbled up from the depths of a drawer this morning, so I'm wearing it honor of that long, hot day. Did I also get an iPhone? Yes, but 6/29/07 was also the day that another Steve Jobs product -- Pixar's Ratatouille -- came out, and since we had to go stand in line at the theater for that movie, I didn't get to activate my iPhone until the next day. That actually ended up being a blessing in disguise, since Apple and AT&T had some real problems for the first few days getting phones activated. I'm now on my sixth iPhone -- each generation, plus a second iPhone 3GS to replace one that I lost -- and they keep getting lighter, slimmer, and more powerful. I wish I could say the same about myself, as this t-shirt seems a bit tighter than it did five years ago...

Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure brings five modern-classic animated films into real, still-animated life this March. The following screens offer a glimpse of each movie -- Cars, Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up and Ratatouille -- and how they'll transfer to motion controls. We're not entirely sure which full-body gesture is required for "riding sewage like it's a boat," but it appears we'll get the chance to find out with Kinect Rush. Thanks, Pixar. %Gallery-144735%

  • *Sigh* Ratatouille game goes platinum

With the rising mainstream popularity of video games it shouldn't be hard to imagine that licensed games can be million-sellers, but news like this just doesn't seem to fit. Selling a million copies on 360 alone, and 4 million across all platforms, the Ratatouille game will now be added to the 360's Platinum hits at a cost of $19.99, where it will undoubtedly sell even more. Which is a bit of a bad thing, as the game was not in any way well-recived by reviewers who found it to be average at best. We say if you're going to make a money-grabbing tie-in game at least make it solid, as other wise it's just an excuse for others to attempt the same thing. And likely fail, resulting in shelves of cookie-cutter-crap.

  • THQ plans games based on Pixar's WALL???E, nobody surprised

With THQ still riding the wave of financial fortitude created by its adaptations of Disney Pixar's Cars and Ratatouille animated features, the company has unsurprisingly confirmed plans to give the film studio's next feature, WALL•E, similar treatment. Versions of the movie-made-game, which centers on a story of a robot named WALL•E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) and his journey of self discovery, should begin to populate store shelves for every platform under the sun in time for the film's summer release. This game is the second title, following last year's Ratatouille, to stem from a new four game deal between THQ and Pixar, meaning that we expect these two will remain in bed together over the next couple of years at the very least. THQ hasn't shed many details on how the WALL•E games will play out, though given previous releases, we expect a handful of levels lifted from the film, partnered with mind numbing icon collecting and actors delivering lines with all of the enthusiasm of a cheese sandwich. Excited yet?

While last week's Blu-ray releases underwhelmed the majority of us, everyone should be pleased this week as we get several great Pixar titles, two new editions of Best of Blu-ray and even a few Blu-ray 4-packs. Ratatouille Cars Pixar Short Films Collection, Vol. 1 The Aviator Oldboy Beowulf & Grendel Best of Blu-ray: Action Best of Blu-ray: Family Blu-ray 4-Pack: Disney Movies Blu-ray 4-Pack: Action Movies Blu-ray 4-Pack: Family Movies The Best of Blu-ray: Action is probably the best of the bundles despite the inclusion of the hilariously awful Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut, but with the newer, gorier Troy Director's Cut, Wyatt Earp and Blood Diamond, you're getting some really great movies at a really great price of only $59.

  • Today's most random swag: Ratatouille thyme

Being writers in the game industry, we'll sometimes find ourselves on the business end of a number of interesting, many times unexpected freebies from PR companies. To take a page from Douglas Adams, most times these can be considered 'mostly harmless,' from gerbil food sent to promote Hamtaro to Psi-Ops' jelly brain in a dish. That said, we've somehow managed to get ourselves onto what must be the most random PR list of all with publisher THQ, as the company just rushed delivered via UPS a large brown box containing not a game nor some widget promoting an upcoming release, but rather a bottle of thyme branded with the logo for Disney's Ratatouille, a game that was not only panned by critics, but also came out nearly four months ago, which for a licensed product makes it the retail equivalent of penny loafers or Rainbow Brite. Still, thyme does smell an awful lot like those pizza scratch n'sniff stickers we used to collect in grade school, so maybe THQ was going for a retro theme that was simply lost on us until just now.

  • Ratatouille joins Cars for November 6th Blu-ray release

Those already saving up their $34.99 for Disney's Cars may now be inclined to pinch those pennies a bit harder, as it looks like Ratatouille will be landing on store shelves the very same day. Sure, this seems like a shameless attempt to get early-bird holiday shoppers (and grown-ups with youngsters in tow) to pick up twice the amount of Blu-ray films they were initially planning to come November 6th, but we won't be surprised if the scheme works out quite well. No word just yet on what kinds of rat-infested extras we'll see on the BD release, but we're keepin' our ears, er, nose to the ground.

If you've wiped your hands clean and are over the BioShock, Beautiful Katamari or Stranglehold demos that were recently released to the XBLM, then we've got some Disney not so fun for you. Available now on the XBLM is a new Ratatouille demo for you to suffer through enjoy. The demo clocks in at a middle-weight size of 708MB and is ready for download by anyone (except Japan), so please don't go give it a whirl and see what comic mischief awaits. Okay, okay, we'll quit* with the childish evil we're projecting towards Ratatouille's general direction. It simply can't could be a good game (though highly doubtful), so go ahead and give the demo a try and garner a reason for hating the game an opinion for yourself. And don't forget to have fun!*Childish evil be damned, we just can't quit!

  • Achievements revealed: Ratatouille, DiRT and more

Yesterday, Xbox360Achievements.org posted complete achievement lists for a few upcoming games including family friendly Ratatouille and the messy DiRT. Ratatouille offers a bunch of objective based achievements with nothing overly spectacular, except for the "Beat Hoisting the Hefty Weight" which caught our eye. DiRT's achievements are rather bland too, nearly a yawn-fest until we spotted the "First Clean Race" achievement. That achievement will be impossible for those of us who like to play dirty. Also, take a gander through Aegis Wing's achievements and focus on getting a few friends together to earn the "Epic Warrior" achievement. Hooking up four players has never been so rewarding. The first gameplay video of the film to game adaption of Ratatouille is available over at GameTrailers. Unfortunately, the aspect ratio is a little wonky on the embedded video above, but the SD and HD versions at GameTrailers are correct. Still, we can get a good look at how the game feels and some of the misadventures you'll partake in as Rémy. Fortunately, the game seems to retain the atmosphere that Pixar puts forth in the film. So, after having played Cars on Xbox 360, how do you think this game will fare as a kids game. More importantly (to some), do you think the achievement difficulty will fall somewhere between Cars and Open Season?

Not a lot of info is out yet on Pixar's summer release Ratatouille, but THQ has let out word that before the movie hits theaters in June, you'll be able to play the game adaptation on your PSP. There aren't much details about any version of the game besides the next-gen one, but if the PSP version is similar, it'll be an action platformer. Will the collective Ratatouille games be the best selling game of this year like Cars was last year? Either way, I'm looking forward to the movie and hoping the game is a worthwhile experience as well. [Via Gamespot ]
