  • Beyond Good & Evil 2 put on the back burner to let Rayman boil over

It's time for the yearly confirmation that, yes, Ubisoft is still working on Beyond Good & Evil 2. The sequel first surfaced in 2008, and since then Ubisoft has treated it like an obnoxious stepchild, providing vague updates on development, and usually only when a rumor forces a statement.Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot tells Polygon that the team, headed by Michel Ancel, is still passionate about Beyond Good & Evil 2, but other games, such as Rayman Legends, have slowed its development."What's very important is that Michel Ancel is kind of doing too many things at the same time," Guillemot says. "He was working on Rayman Origins last year, and he's working a lot on Rayman Legends this year. So, you know, when he does that, he kind of puts too much of his time on the other projects that he has. So the fact is that working on Legends is slowing the process on Beyond Good & Evil 2."Rayman Legends was recently delayed to Q1 2013 on the Wii U. Perhaps once Legends launches, Ancel and Ubisoft will get to work, for real, on Beyond Good and & Evil 2. And maybe they'll even tell someone about it.

Rayman Legends was on track to be a launch release for the Wii U in Europe, but Ubisoft has moved it back to Q1 of 2013, which we suppose keeps it inside Nintendo's ridiculous six-month "launch window.""Rayman Legends will launch worldwide in the first quarter of 2013," Ubisoft told Videogamer. "We're happy that fans are excited about the game, and we are taking the time to make sure we deliver a game that lives up to and hopefully exceeds their expectations. We'll have more details to share soon."Being Ubisoft, the publisher still has a ton of games prepared for launch day in North America, including Assassin's Creed 3, ESPN Sports Connection, Just Dance 4, Rabbids Land, Your Shape, and ZombiU.

We knew that Ubisoft's Rayman Legends would be launching on the Wii U sometime this Christmas season, but now we know specifically when, at least in Europe: November 30. The game was announced as a European Wii U launch title during Nintendo's European Wii U event this morning.Naturally, the game's heavy WiiPad functionality was shown off, which allows one player to add lums into the world and otherwise assist the other players, but otherwise the real meat of the announcement was the European release date. We're keeping an eye out for its North American equivalent and will update as we know more.Update: Ubisoft sends us a short video of Rayman creator Michel Ancel explaining why he's bringing Rayman Legends to Wii U, which you can watch above.

When Rayman Legends launches as a Wii U game this fall, that's all it'll be launching as. According to the last three or so seconds of the game's Gamescom trailer above, Rayman Legends will be a Wii U exclusive.Considering the amount of touchscreen/Wiipad stuff going in this trailer, it's clear that Ubisoft has been taking Wii U integration seriously – we just didn't think it was that serious. All Rayman titles up until this point have been multiplatform, and since Ubisoft itself said the game wasn't necessarily an exclusive back in June, we kinda expected that to be the case.We asked Ubisoft for clarification just to make super extra sure, and were told that "yes, Rayman Legends is a Wii U exclusive. It will be releasing in Holiday 2012."Still, we'd be surprised if the game didn't end up other other platforms eventually, though we imagine quite a bit of rejiggering would be required to make Rayman Legends function on an Xbox. The PS3, however, could handle it quite easily provided there was also a Vita involved.

If you're counting down the days till the Wii U is released, you might recall that back in January Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata said the console will ship with an NFC chip inside. Well, you can now get a taste of how games will incorporate that feature, thanks to this just-leaked trailer for Rayman Legends. According to the video, Rayman Rabbid action figures can jump into the game when a player taps them to the Wii U's screen. (It looks like that trick will work with an Assassin's Creed Ezio Auditore da Firenze figurine too.) Check out the trailer, courtesy of Gamekult, while you can -- after all, Ubisoft didn't want you to glimpse the U's magical powers just yet.

It would be hard to believe the Rayman Legends video leaked this morning was anything but real, but Ubisoft removed any lingering doubt today. The company issued a statement (excerpted by VG247) confirming the existence of the game. Of course, it's not final. The leaked video was "intended as a purely internal demonstrative video, and in NO way represents the final game, the final console or their features," Ubisoft said, referring to the game as "Rayman Origins' sequel." The video was meant for "internal production teams who often create game prototypes with work in progress development kits." In other words, it was a demonstration for the people working on the game, not a demonstration of the game. The upside of this leak is that we can now issue feedback to the team working on the actual game, in the form of this open statement: Hey, that footage looked great. Make the game look like that.Update: the video has been removed at Ubisoft's request.

There's nothing we like more than a good, mysterious domain registration. This latest batch of URLs with undisclosed purposes comes courtesy of Ubisoft, which has registered both RaymanLegends.com and Rayman-Legends.com.This maneuver – spotted by Fusible – follows rumors that Ubisoft has already been pitching a sequel to last year's 2D platformer, Rayman Origins, in an online marketing survey. According to leaked concepts, the game might see Rayman tussling with legendary creatures like ghosts and dragons. Ubisoft, of course, is opting not to comment on "rumors or speculation."
