Canon's new Rebel T2i shoots 18 megapixel stills, ups the video options
We'd heard inklings, but Canon's brand new Rebel T2i (also known as the EOS 550D outside the US) is newly official and oh-so-desirable. The camera takes quite a few features from Canon's EOS 7D, including an almost identical sensor, the selectable frame rates, and the stereo mic jack. There's also a new widescreen LCD and button layout to differentiate it from its T1i sibling -- which will stick around on the market to pick up the poorer Canon lovers among us. The shooter can capture 18.7 megapixel stills at 3.7 fps, with better, 7D-style light metering and an expanded ISO range of 100 to 6400. Video is even more thrilling, with the addition of 30 / 25 / 24 fps 1080p (the T1i was limited to a silly 20 fps at that resolution), along with 720p at 50 / 60 fps and VGA at similar rates. The camera can also do an ultra-zoomed "movie crop" function that actually does the cropping on the CMOS sensor to provide about 7x of additional zoom without losing quality in SD. Canon Rebel T2i rumored for next week
It's all rumor for now, but Canon Rumors has word from a trusted source that a new Rebel is coming next week known as the T2i. According to its source, we can expect a new, higher resolution LCD, selectable FPS video, new LP-E8 battery and grip in the followup to the Rebel T1i. It also brings a new Rebel shape and build quality but lacks an articulating screen. And in case you're wondering, the uptick in camera news is related to the runup to the big PMA 2010 photog show kicking off on February 19th -- so get used to it.
Canon EOS Rebel XT spits in gravity's face, survives 3,000-foot drop?
Picture this: you're a skydive instructor with a makeshift helmet apparatus for taking stills and video of your feats. Suddenly, about 3,000 feet from above the ground, your photography mount decides to take its own flight pattern and sets off without you. That apparently happened to a friend of FredMiranda forum member Calin Leucuta, who calculates the velocity at impact was approximately 100 miles per hour. After a 15- to 20-minute search after landing, the video camera was found to be without saving... but the Canon Rebel XT for still was still functional despite a crack in the body and some jerkiness with the zoom lens. We're still hesitant to take it at face value -- it's a pretty wild and impressive tale, after all -- but video is reportedly on the way and we'd definitely like to see that footage remove all lingering doubt from our minds. GSM Palm Pre unlocked with a little Rebel assistance
It's not exactly the native unlock we've been waiting for, but those of you in Europe dying for a Pre unshackled from O2 will be happy to know that the Rebel Simcard II is now compatible with Palm's first webOS device. The £10.99 / $17.95 accessory card slots in between your carrier's SIM and the Pre's SIM slot, bypassing the Pre's network locks and allowing full access to voice and data services including 3G. Sadly, the Pre doesn't have the radio support to make this work in the States on anything but EDGE, but at least it's a start, right? Video after the break. [Thanks, Ji]
How would you change Canon's T1i DSLR?
Last week all the Nikon fanboys supporters were out in full-force critiquing the D5000, so we couldn't let another week slip by without giving Canon advocates (and haters, we don't discriminate) a similar chance with the T1i. Hitting the market at just about the same time, this well-specced entry-level DSLR packed a few niceties than alternative units simply did not: 1080p video, a 15.1 megapixel sensor and a price tag below $1,000. That said, there are still some areas that we reckon Canon could've improved upon, and if you feel the same way, we'd love to hear about it. Are you kosher with the 20fps 1080p mode? Is the image quality up to snuff? How's that stock lens treating you? Cut loose, won'tcha?
Canon EOS Rebel T1i impressions, head-to-head with Nikon D5000
Make no mistake about it, the low / mid-range DSLR battle of early 2009 is on. Just over a month ago, Canon shook up the entry-level DSLR game with a shooter that packed a 1080p video mode, a 15.1 megapixel sensor and a price tag well below the magical $1,000 mark. Right around a fortnight later, Nikon not-at-all-coincidentally issued a new shooter in its own range, one that was no doubt built to rival the previously mentioned EOS Rebel T1i. Just this week, both of these bad boys showed up on our doorstep, and we've spent every waking minute since mashing buttons and capturing memories in order to give you our take on the pair. Canon Rebel T1i trickling out to stores
Sure, the Nikon D5000 might have gotten itself a ship date today, but Canon's Rebel T1i is doing one better and actually turning up in stores a couple weeks ahead of its scheduled mid-May debut. Sure, we've already seen a couple video clips, but Canon's new EOS Rebel T1i / 500D certainly deserves a proper unboxing, don't you think? First Nikon D5000 and Canon T1i video clips appear
It's kind of strange that the most anticipated sample media from the latest crop of DSLRs is actually HD video, but that's the way the market's going, and the new Canon EOS Rebel T1i and Nikon D5000 are no exception. Demystifying Digital has footage from both, and while Nikon's newest seems to deliver essentially the same CMOS jelly-motion results from its 12.3 megapixel sensor as the D90, the T1i is a pleasant surprise -- we're not seeing much wiggle at 720p, which might be a result of the higher-res 15 megapixel sensor. We'll wait to see full-res samples and some actual still images before we crown a winner, but we'll tell you right now that neither one of these is going to make us leave a dedicated camcorder behind when it's important -- the lack of autofocus and the windblown internal mics just don't cut it. Searching For Sonny: first feature film shot on a DSLR
What's the world coming too, really? Not only did we see the first official presidential portrait shot with a DSLR this year, but we're also seeing the first feature film to be entirely shot on one as well. Searching For Sonny has grabbed the rights to that latter claim, a little ditty written and directed by one Andrew Disney. As expected, we have Canon's almighty EOS 5D Mark II to thank, though Nikon fanboys will surely love that their lenses were used. Canon's EOS Digital Rebel T1i gets hands-on preview
It's early on, we know, but the EOS Digital Rebel T1i is already shaping up to be a winner. Merely hours after its official unveiling, the shutterbugs over at Imaging-Resource have put together a remarkably thorough hands-on preview that takes you through practically every feature offered on the new DSLR. One area of importance was the movie mode; we quickly noticed that Canon deliberately failed to mention the word "autofocus" when referencing "movie mode," and sure enough, the cam won't autofocus continuously. As with the D90, this little fact puts a huge damper on what would otherwise be an (even more) amazing feature, but we suppose we'll chalk it up to baby steps and just hope for better at PMA 2010. At any rate, everything else seemed to exceed expectations, with their beta unit delivering image quality "at least as good as the 50D." Hop to the read link for all the rest.
Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i now official
Yep, Canon just went live with that Rebel T1i DSLR that leaked a bit earlier, and it's looking like a hell of a response to the Nikon D90: an XSi body jacked with a sensor matching the 50Ds 15.1 megapixels, 1080p HD video recording, and a $900 price tag. Yeah, it's gonna be a hit. Other notable specs include a 3.0-inch Live View screen, a Digic IV processor, ISO 12.8k sensitivity, and the same 18-55 IS EF-S kit lens as the XSi -- in other words, all those rumors were true. Canon's EOS Rebel T1i DSLR leaked?
Looks like CNET might've jumped the gun a bit, releasing a video podcast that outed Canon's oft rumored EOS Rebel T1i before the company had a chance to announce it themselves. The evidence has since been pulled and we're looking for a copy to verify, but according to the DP Review forum posters who claim to have seen it, the 15 megapixel DSLR has the same sensor size as the 50D and can shoot video at 720p / 30 FPS and 1080p / 20 FPS. Its frame is comparable to the Rebel XSi. How would you change Canon's EOS 50D?
If the Nikon D90's questionable 720p movie mode did nothing for you, or if you're a self-proclaimed Canon fanboy through and through, there's at least a sliver of a chance you bit on the EOS 50D. Now that you've had a solid month to flex that shutter finger and pore over the results, how are you liking things? Experiencing a huge dose of buyer's remorse? Absolutely elated with the low-light performance? Did you find enough extras to warrant the upgrade from a D40? We're just looking to hear how you really like / dislike Canon's latest mid-range DSLR, and more importantly, how you'd do things differently if given the keys to the company's R&D lab. First trailer of Love is absolutely breathtaking
What does it say about our industry when one man and a laptop can create a game arguably more artistically ambitious and breathtaking than anything to come out of SOE, Mythic, Funcom, Turbine, Cryptic, or Blizzard? We were left to ponder that question after watching the first trailer for Love, an MMO with a one-man development team.We were first introduced to the game at GDC, where we first witnessed its gorgeous impressionist art style and learned about its procedurally generated narrative and creativity-driven social gameplay. Trailer host Rock, Paper Shotgun says this new trailer is the first moving image of the game seen by the public, but we actually included an off-screen video in our impressions of creator Eskil Steenberg's one-on-one presentation. Canon posts up 1.0.9 firmware update for EOS Rebel XSi
By and large, Canon's EOS Rebel XSi was widely adored. Still, even the fanboys in attendance can't deny that firmware updates that solve any number of quirks are loved just the same. Canon has just posted up firmware v1.0.9 for the aforesaid DSLR, which purportedly fixes three primary issues. The 7.81MB download addresses a "phenomenon in which AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) shooting does not operate normally under specific conditions," another in which "the Live View exposure simulation warning indication does not properly display during Live View shooting, and yet another in which "images cannot be played back after continuous shooting when a printer is connected to the camera or a video output terminal is used." Canon's EOS Rebel XS / 1000D DSLR hits the test bench
With all the DSLR noise going on, the EOS Rebel XS managed to sneak in without too many people noticing. The proper entry-level replacement to the XTi / 400D recently took the time to cave to Camera Labs' every request, and when all was said and done, critics didn't find too many negative points to harp on. The all-important image quality ranked very highly, and the built-in live view was obviously a boon. Granted, the fixed screen and 7-point AF system (versus the 9-pointer on the XTi) were slight bummers, but it still managed to secure an 82% (Highly Recommended) rating. Intempo Rebel records songs from FM radio, freaks out RIAA
This is either the best or worst idea ever -- we're still not sure. The Intempo Rebel (aptly named) records songs from FM radio stations, strips out DJ chatter and ads, and saves them to an SD or MMC card as MP3 files. What's more, it even goes after the most-played songs to make sure you're getting all the good (overplayed?) tracks right off the air. It also sports a USB port, line-in jack, and headphone plug. Intempo calls it a "music sampling system" that cuts out "hyperactive DJs" -- we call it a headache for the RIAA. It can be yours for £69.99 or $138 US.[Via Redferret]
Canon's Rebel XS / 1000D specs uncovered
Hot on the heels of that Rebel XS / 1000D leak from last week comes a handful of specs and new info on the rumored DSLR. According to the camera fanatics at Photography Bay, the new model will sport a 10.1 megapixel CMOS chip, Digic III, 7-point auto-focus, 3 FPS, a 2.5-inch LCD display, will weigh 540 grams, and should feature simplified 450D-like menus. The camera's price-point is rumored to be on the low end of things, which furthers our suspicions that this will be a replacement for the aging Rebel XT. Canon prepping a Digital Rebel XS / 1000D?
Canon's been known to leak an upcoming model or five in website descriptions, UPC codes, certification lists, and driver downloads, so pardon us if we're not too shocked that references to a "Rebel XS / 1000D" have popped up in the latest version of the company's RAW conversion utility. Of course, there aren't any specs or pictures, but based on Canon's naming scheme, we'd hazard that it'll be a lower-end version of the Rebel XSi, replacing the now somewhat-outdated Rebel XT. Of course, that's purely conjecture, but based on Canon's track record with these leaks, we'll know for sure soon enough.[Via 1000 Noisy Cameras]
