  • PSA: Resistance PS3 trilogy going offline on April 8

Sony let us know last year that online play for the PS3's Resistance trilogy would end in early 2014, and a recent tweet from developer Insomniac Games has narrowed that ending date to April 8. Insomniac's post encourages fans to get online for the trilogy's final moments and "make some memories" with some of Insomniac's own employees. In response to an inquiry about continuing online support for the Vita's Resistance: Burning Skies, Insomniac tweeted they're "not sure" about that game's potential loss of online play. An optimist would take this as a significant withdrawal of the Chimera invasion, but with Sony's June 2012 statement that no Resistance games were in the works, it's a little sad to think we won't get another chance to fight back the invasive alien race. Gran Turismo 5 and the Resistance franchise will be pulling the online plug in early 2014. Sony has announced that Gran Turismo 5 will conclude its online features on May 20, 2014, with the Resistance franchise on PlayStation 3 following on March 28. Also, as of January 28, 2014, the online connectivity of MAG, SOCOM: Special Forces and SOCOM: Confrontation will also cease to be. Since MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation are online only, we hope you enjoy your new coasters.

Look, times are tough in America and now, more than ever, game-buying people all over the country are asking themselves "How many space bugs will I get to murder for the money I'm spending?"Sony's and Insomniac's newly announced Resistance Collection for the PS3 has a remarkably high bug-murder-to-cost ratio, packing Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, Resistance 3 and "the best DLC" for Resistances 2 and 3 into one $39.99 package. The Aftermath Pack and skin bundle for Resistance 2 and the Brutality and Survival packs for Resistance 3 are the only DLC specifically mentioned by name, though whether that represents the full extent of the included content remains uncertain.Release date and various further information will be made available "in the coming weeks," according to the PlayStation Blog. For now, maybe consider saving $20 and just buying the good one.%Gallery-167513%

  • 'Resistance: The Trilogy' pops up on Amazon France with May 16 launch

Normally when we report on retail listings outing a game, said retail listing is quickly pulled down to avoid embarrassment. In the case of Resistance: The Trilogy, well, apparently Amazon France isn't too concerned. A listing – one that's still live as of this writing – for just such a game popped up on Amazon France, spotted by UK site CVG.The listing puts a May 16 launch date and a €59.99 ($79.99) price tag on the unannounced bundle, which we're guessing means a May 15 launch here in North America (and a likely $59.99 pricing). You've probably already guessed as much, but the product listing confirms the trilogy as a repackaging of the three Resistance titles already available for the PlayStation 3. With such a revealing product page, we expect to hear something more official from Sony as the day goes on. We've reached out regardless in the meantime.

  • Insomniac done with Resistance

Insomniac CEO Ted Price has said the company is done with the Resistance franchise."We won't be making any more Resistances," Price told VG247. And that's that. The company previously announced it's moving on to multiplatform projects like Overstrike, a four-player co-op shooter, which will hopefully pan out as a more substantial and integrated experience than the company's previous grand experiment in multiplayer co-op, Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One.At least Insomniac ended its work on the Resistance franchise on a high note. Resistance 3 was easily the best in a series that had been trying to find its footing this entire console generation.

Another year, another 12 days of holiday giveaways! Between now and Christmas Day (give or take a day), we're doing the one thing that makes us feel truly alive: giving. Specifically, we're giving you fine folks some of the swag we've managed to collect in our cluttered home offices. And the good will and merriment doesn't stop here! Don't forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for even more chances to win! This is it: Our final holiday giveaway. Christmas is over, and our mountain of home office swag has become a mound ... but there is one box left over that's taking up an impressive amount of real estate. It's Sony's PlayStation 3D Display, a 24" LCD whose ability to simultaneously display gameplay for two separate players sporting 3D glasses is kind of awesome. Just so you get the full 3D experience, we'll be bundling some first-party Sony titles like Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Resistance 3, along with the madcap insanity of Saint's Row: The Third. And lest you think we're only concerned with your eyeballs, we want to tell you about the Astro A40 Wireless headphones we're including. But these aren't any Astro headphones, oh no! These headphones include custom Joystiq inserts, as pictured after the break. And to satisfy one more sense, we're throwing in Power A's PS3 Air Flow controller, which will bathe your sweaty mitts in a cool breeze. We're missing taste and smell, we know, but we trust your diet of pizza-blasted Doritos will take care of both of those. %Gallery-138473%

  • Resistance 3 'Brutality' DLC is totally metal, coming today

For the elite cadre of people who have discovered and loved Resistance 3, some new downloadable content is on the way ... today! Revealed just yesterday on X-Play (watch the video here), the co-op "Brutality" DLC includes a new survival-based scenario in a "darker" version of the main game's Wales locale. To help you deal with the "ongoing onslaught of Grims," as Insomniac CEO Ted Price put it, you'll have the assistance of the Sledgehammer. That's not a codename for some kind of missile -- it's an actual sledgehammer. Helping to darken the setting even further is a seven-song soundtrack provided by metal band Mastodon. "But wait," you say. "Isn't metal totally anachronistic for a game set in 1957?" Of course, it would be, if the characters heard it. Also, all metal musicians are actually aliens. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you already knew that. No human can play drums that fast.

Insomniac Games tweets that it's patching Resistance 3 today with a free update that will bring two new maps to the game. Patch 1.05 will add a sixteen player map called Creek and a four player map called The Granary to the title, both available to players for free after the patch is downloaded and installed. The patch also adds performance updates, improved team balancing, and makes sure that players who have hit level 60 can now unlock any and all equipment and abilities. There's also a tweak to make the Leaper Corpse a little easier, and Move functionality has been tweaked to work better.

    10.18.2011

A "Mayhem Edition" Move bundle containing Killzone 3 and Resistance 3, along with a separate "Special Edition" of LittleBigPlanet 2, have apparently been revealed through some box factory snapshots. Slickdeals.net forum user "Scream777" posted several pics of the unannounced bundles from the box manufacturer he works at. The pictures include the aforementioned "Mayhem Edition," a splayed box of the previously announced GoldenEye 007: Reloaded PS Move bundle, a 160GB PS3 bundle with Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One and unannounced LittleBigPlanet 2 "Special Edition", and the Uncharted 3 320GB bundle. One of the few things that immediately jump out as suspect is the typo of "steroscopic" on the Ratchet and LBP 2 bundle. The forum poster says Sony, which designed the packaging, didn't notice the mistake until later and didn't want to pay for a new run of boxes. [Thanks, SwiftyMcQuick.]

There may be a healthy selection of new PlayStation kits coming your way in the near future. Images of unannounced bundle boxes have surfaced over at Slickdeals, courtesy of Scream777, who claims to work at a package production facility that makes 'em. Those include a previously unknown Mayhem Edition PS Move kit with a Sharpshooter peripheral and the newest Resistance and Killzone titles, while a Complete Entertainment Bundle packs a 160GB PS3 Slim with a free month of PlayStation Plus and the latest Little Big Planet and Ratchet and Clank. Gaming blog Gimme Gimme Games claims that the CEB will be $250, with Scream777 noting that its order invoice lists it as a Black Friday special. Adding credence to the leak, said poster also threw in box shots of the 320GB Uncharted 3 bundle and Goldeneye 007: Reloaded Sharpshooter set -- both of which are currently available for pre-order. Here's to hoping it all proves true, but in the meantime, you'll find more details in the links below. Update: We've received a few comments noting the typo of "stereoscopic" on the box. While all of the pictures in the source do seem like they could be valid (as we mentioned, the latter two can currently be pre-ordered), it's certainly worth raising an eyebrow to.

  • Sony implies all first-party titles to use Online Pass

We hope you like using that on-screen keyboard on your PS3. Sony confirmed in a statement today that Uncharted 3 will use the Online Pass system introduced earlier this year with Resistance 3. However, the same statement also specified that "Online Pass will be incorporated into... future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios games with online functionality." Similar to EA's Project Ten Dollar and other single-use code programs from other developers, Sony's Online Pass ties multiplayer functionality to the use of, er, a single-use code. While Sony didn't actually spell out Online Pass use "forever and ever," they did include a portentious "We will provide further information in the future." We recommend a USB keyboard.

Zombie RPG Dead Island continues feasting on money and tourists in its second week atop the UK all formats sales chart. Chart-Track notes (to the surprise of no one) that Deep Silver's two weeks of Dead Island sales have eclipsed the lifetime sales of any other title in the publisher's catalog. That includes and Nail'd and Prison Break: The Conspiracy. Another unexpected development on the charts: Warhammer 40K Space Marine maintained its second place position again this past week. Despite a 52 percent drops in sales, the Emperor's fist kept the aliens of Resistance 3 in third. The only "new" title to break the Top 40 last week was God of War Collection Volume 2, which bludgeoned everything below the 35th spot. Price promotions moved Red Faction: Armageddon up 246 percent into 11th, while Kinect's Rise of Nightmares had a better second week, running up from 37th place to 18th.

Love it or leave it zombie RPG Dead Island has consumed the top of the UK sales chart in its debut week. Another premiere expounded righteous force for the Emperor: Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. Chart-Track notes the PC sales for Space Marine were actually higher than Dead Island, which it believes is due to the former not being available on UK's Steam at launch. Driver: San Francisco shifted down into third in its second week on the charts, while Resistance 3 invaded the UK, nabbing fourth place in its first week available. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, currently in fifth, is doing its part to suppress the Zumba Fitness conspiracy, by keeping the dance fitness simulator in sixth. Other notable premieres were 3DS's Star Fox 64 3D and Kinect's Rise of Nightmares in ninth and a brisk 37th place, respectively. Check out the drying paint of a fresh UK top ten after the break.
