Considering LG began its CES hype campaign in early December, the company's obscenely early press conference today -- the first of the show -- was unexpectedly short and sweet. LG is committed to releasing a 5G smartphone this year, and promises its ThinQ AI home appliances will get progressively smarter, suggesting how to better manage your home rather than just blindly obeying your conversational commands. LG also gave an appropriate amount of airtime to HomeBrew, its new capsule-based craft beer system for nurturing easy, homemade batches.

We've seen LG Displays bend and roll OLED screens for years at CES, but those were just cool demonstrations, and nothing else. Now, LG Electronics is finally putting that technology into something you can actually buy: the Signature Series OLED TV R. It might look like a normal 65-inch TV at first, but hit a button and the OLED screen slowly rolls into its brushed aluminum case, like a paper towel winding itself back up. Instead of being a giant black mirror, you're left with a high-tech credenza.

LG Display showcased its very first rollable OLED screen a few years ago at CES, but it was clearly in the prototype stage: Guy with white gloves, no touching, et cetera, et cetera. Exciting, sure, but also distant. Now, the world's first rollable 65-inch 4K OLED display offers a more realistic (yet still kinda crazy) use for OLED tech that's flexible -- something that we'll probably see in a few premium TVs over the next few years.

It's real and it's dreamy. After touring the company's other futuristic prototypes, LG Display got in touch so it could show us that glorious rollable OLED in action. It was glorious. And the future. And something that can actually get me excited here at CES. My picnic blanket OLED TV will happen.

In 2014, LG announced that it built an 18-inch OLED panel that rolls up just like a newspaper. Now, it's ready to show off its ultra-thin beauty to the public CES. It's just one of many concepts that LG hopes will show off what it can do with OLED these days. Back when it was first announced, LG said the rollable OLED panel was only 3 mm thick and featured a 1,200 by 810 pixel resolution. It's unclear if anything has changed over the years, but we'll report back once we check it out. More so than curved screens, thin rollable displays could make truly futuristic devices possible -- imagine a digital news reader that actually felt like a newspaper.
