The fastest-moving stars in our galaxy, known as hypervelocity stars, may have a more interesting backstory than scientists first thought, according to new research from Cambridge University. Astronomers initially believed these super-rare stars -- only 20 have been identified -- had been expelled from the center of the Milky Way by a supermassive black hole, but the study shows that they may have started their breakneck journeys in another galaxy altogether: the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).

  • Teen runs away to meet older WoW soulmate [Updated]

digg_url = 'http://wow.joystiq.com/2010/01/05/teen-runs-away-to-meet-adult-wow-soulmate/'; Before we delve into this story, I just want to say that everything turned out alright. No Canadian laws were broken. No authority figures taking advantage of underage people in their care. The teenager is home safe and his online lover is allowed to return home whenever she likes. Here are the facts: A 16 year old boy in Ontario had an online affair with a 42 year old mother of four in Texas. They met in WoW, but much of the affair took place in MSN chat. The parents knew of the relationship for over a year. The boy told the woman that he was 20. The consenting age in Ontario, Canada is 16. The boy had a history of addiction to WoW, had seen a counselor and was given computer privileges again as a reward for good behavior. She came to visit him for the Christmas holidays and asked him to meet her in a hotel. He asked his parents for permission. They said no. He snuck out at 2 am and went to her anyway. The parents and local authorities made a plea to the public for his safe return. The boy and woman were spotted together in public two days later and brought in. Again, the boy is home safe and the woman is not being charged with anything in Canada.

We all know that online gaming can strike up a romance between players, but sometimes romance can be taken a bit too far. Over the holidays, 16-year-old Andrew Kane of Barrie in Ontario, Canada, decided that he had to meet his 42-year-old online lover, Lauri Price from Texas. Price had taken a trip up to Canada to meet Kane, but when Kane had asked for a ride from his parents to a nearby hotel to meet Price, his parents returned with the pretty much expected, "No." This lead Kane to run away from his house at the early morning hour of 2 A.M. on an awkward quest to meet his "World of Warcraft soulmate." Kane went missing for two days until he and Price were found at a Future Shop in Orilla, Ontario on December 31st via a tip from the public. Kane had apparently lied about his age to Price, saying he was 20. The legal age of consent in Canada is currently 16. Police have said that Price will not be receiving any criminal charges and is free to travel back to the United States. Kane had been "seeing" Price for over a year via their relationship on World of Warcraft. [Thanks for the tip, Eric!]

Ariel Waldman contributes Movie Gadget Friday, where she highlights the lovable and lame gadgets from the world of cinema. Previously on Movie Gadget Friday, we tapped into the near dystopian future of fear in Brazil. Keeping on that 1980's near-future vibe (but with a slightly more sentient twist), this week we check out Michael Crichton's Runaway, starring Tom Selleck, Gene Simmons, Cynthia Rhodes and Kirstie Alley. Filled with circuitry and hardwired chips, the movie reinforces wholesome family values by featuring warranty voids as the gateway hack to murder. Leaping Insect Robot Measuring in around the size of a human head, these six-legged, spider-like, autonomous robots are mechanical in movement but shockingly precise in killing prey. The autonomous insects have the ability to propel themselves up to seven feet in the air, allowing for attacks on unsuspecting victims. Dual-functioning, the legs are able to crawl and grasp a multitude of surfaces, albeit awkwardly and rather slowly. After programming targets into a mainframe, the robots are able to identify and kill victims by injecting them with acid via a probe before short circuiting and eventually exploding into a ball of flames. Sadly, the robots lack any sort of remote control, making human errors in target-programming unable to be edited.

Another Tuesday has arrived, bringing with it (as it so often does) a new adventure game for you to enjoy, courtesy of Good Old Games. This week, the service welcomes Runaway: A Road Adventure, an adventure game wherein a soon-to-be-college grad has to work with a "mysterious striptease dancer" to figure out why he was attacked by gangsters. It's available now for $9.99.GoG also just added Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries, which we were going to talk about, until we saw the bit in Runaway about mystery strippers. Good luck competing with that, more-than-10-year-old strategy game!

  • Runaway series to continue on Nintendo systems

The Runaway series of adventure games recently made its first steps onto consoles via a DS port of Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle, which actually isn't out yet, and a planned Wii port as well. As revealed at GDC, developer Pendulo Studios is going one step further for the next installment, called Runaway: A Twist of Fate. From the outset, this latest game is planned as a PC/Wii/DS release. There are no details or real screens (for any platform) from the new game yet, but based on the latest concept art, it's all dark and gritty and stuff. Quite a contrast from the beach-party look of Runaway 2. The most important thing is that it's an adventure game on the Wii.[Via NeoGAF]

Okay, so for the most part Runaway 2 looks great. The art in the backgrounds is beautiful, and we're genetically unable to hate on a new adventure game. We're total jerks, however, and had to point and laugh at this screenshot, because, despite the high quality of the rest of the game's art, the character models tend to look like cel-shaded Poser models with caveman faces. It's totally unfair and mean for us to draw attention to that!To make up for it, we'll point out that Runaway 2 has what might be the prettiest inventory screen we've seen on the DS. The color in the background image is wonderful. Hooray for occasionally great art design!

The recently-announced DS version of Runaway 2 is looking pretty spiffy -- and that's a good thing, since it's apparently set for the end of this month. So soon? At least, according to Jeux France; other sources we've seen indicate early next year. And really, considering the holiday glut, early next year may be better, but we'll keep an eye on this one regardless, because the expanding visuals are certainly an interesting idea.%Gallery-9671%

What was that about adventure games? Asked and answered, it would seem. Focus Home Interactive is bringing the DS version of the adventure game Runaway: Dream of the Turtle to the U.S.The game follows Brian and Gina, a couple who just survived a bunch of crazy stuff (in the first Runaway, obviously), as their vacation turns into-- what else-- an adventure. Apparently the story picks up soon after the first game and ends in a cliffhanger that resolves in the as-yet-unreleased third game. We're getting ... the middle.Runaway 2 on the PC earned some wildly mixed reviews, ranging from a score of 100 all the way down to 40. So it's either great or terrible, or somewhere in between.[Update: Screens can be found here.]

  • Runaway 2 coming to DS in surprisingly complete form

Runaway: Dream of the Turtle, a cel-shaded French adventure game that is part of a big hit series in Europe (adventure game? hit? Wow.) is being ported to the DS by French developer Cyanide. In order to get the game onto the DS in an unedited format, they've managed to compress down all the art to a DS-capable size. But rather than shrinking everything down to fit on two 256x192 screens, they decided to keep it larger, allowing players to view the game in a more shrunken-down display, and zoom in to more detailed visuals at any point. The video contains some information on the difficulty involved in porting a PC game requiring half a gig of RAM to the DS. It also shows off some of the DS footage, which really doesn't look bad, especially for a fully 3D game like this. But to be honest, we're happy to have a little bit of compression obscuring our view of that character art.

  • Surviving to see another ding

I'm facing exactly this issue right now (in fact, it's one reason why I'm thinking of rolling a hunter again and ditching my mage)-- Peterxt from Dragonblight want to know what the best class for surviving is. That is, what's the class that, when things go wrong, can get themselves out of trouble alive? I'm assuming he means solo-- everyone should stay alive in a group setting, or something is going wrong. The obvious answer, of course, is the paladin. It's one reason they're so hated-- they wear plate, they can heal, and just when you think you've whittled them down, they have that stupid bubble. In terms of solo play, paladins aren't the fastest killers, but they are very good at taking on adds one after another. When things go wrong, paladins have lots of escape routes. And in fact, mages have lots of escape routes as well. They fall apart easily when getting hit, but they have so many abilities to keep from getting hit that a mage with a little mana and their wits about them can actually survive almost anything-- drop a Frost Nova, Blink away, keep Frost Armor up to slow attackers when they do hit, and you can pretty much run your way out of trouble (not to mention, if you're frost, that ice block can be the ultimate survival tool). That requires a lot of technique, though-- if you really want to stay away from a graveyard, a mage isn't your cup of tea.Every class has their own escape plans (Vanish for rogues, Last Stand for warriors, and so on), but for my money, no class is better at surviving solo PvE then a hunter. Feign death is terrific, and if it doesn't work, there's always the option to let your pet tank while you flee. Or, now that they work in battle, traps. Or Scatter Shot. Or Concussive Shot. Heck, Misdirection even works on NPCs, so if you happen to see someone around that you want to tank for you, you can throw up Misdirection and exit stage left.Every class can survive if it's played carefully and well. But if you never, ever want to see a graveyard, I'd say hunter or paladin.

  • Devious Clocky hits the market, ready to roll

We must have missed the memo explaining the world's growing problem of ignoring their alarm clocks, but on second thought, maybe it's just time (ahem) for manufacturers to crank out solutions to the issue that has quietly been around for centuries. Not too long after the ever-mischievous Blowfly hit the market to force drowsy individuals to rise and shine, Nanda Home is offering up the rugged (and oh-so-devious) Clocky to those who are ready to deal with their addiction to snooze. Ready to roll in almond white, aqua, and mint colors, this dual-wheeled alarm clock gives users just one free round of snooze before it darts around the room, blaring its alarm and zooming across floors until the exhausted owner manages to locate, load, and fire his / her shotgun at the free-spirited toy. Watch out, though, as this bugger can even leap from three-foot heights without missing a tick, and it's finally ready to shake up your morning routine for a relatively modest $49.99.[Via GadgetReview]

  • Phone or yo-yo? ModeLabs unveils new concepts

    by

Never mind those fancy fuel cells -- just knock that phone around a bit to keep it juiced. At least that's the idea with three new concept handsets introduced by France-based ModeLabs, the same company hooking up with Levi's (to produce phones with decidedly less fancy recharging technology and more denim, we imagine). First up is the aptly named "YoYo," a puck-shaped device (pictured) designed to be worn around the neck that draws power from a combination of solar cells and the user's movement. Next up, the "U-Turn" somehow managed to eke out some electrons from the opening and closing of its keyboard, while the fitness-themed "Runaway" gets regenerated while strapped to the wrist. Of course, none of these are anywhere near production, but the folks at ModeLabs are apparently gunning to market the technology to manufacturers before too long.[Via textually.org]

What we're watching: Finally an HD premiere from The CW, as Runaway, a series about a whole family on the run from the law begins tonight. Also airing for the first time is Heroes on NBC, as everyday people gain supernatural powers. Slightly less fantastic but still extraodinary is the return of the NFL to New Orleans, with the Saints home opener vs. Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip received good reviews for its premiere episode and is back with number two, along with the whole CBS lineup bookended by new comedy The Class and CSI: Miami. If Heroes doesn't fulfill your sci-fi urge, there's still Star Trek: Enterprise on HDNet and Doom on Cinemax. Our traditional high-def listings continue below.
