Netflix is working on a live-action 'Dragon's Lair' movie
After the massive success of Stranger Things, Netflix is delving back into '80s culture for another of its upcoming projects. It's developing a live-action movie based on the classic arcade game Dragon's Lair (which the Stranger Things kids actually play in the show's second season).
Video game movie 'Free Guy' signs Jodie Comer, Lil Rel and Joe Keery
Things are moving forward for video game focused action-comedy Free Guy. The movie, which stars Deadpool favorite Ryan Reynolds, has just signed Killing Eve's Jodie Comer, Get Out's Lil Rel and Stranger Things' Joe Keery in supporting roles. Free Guy -- set to begin shooting in April -- tells the story of a background character (Reynolds) who realizes he's living in a video game, and with the help of an avatar (Comer), must stop the game's developers from shutting down his world.
Ryan Reynolds is turning a Reddit short story into a horror movie
A novella which was originally posted on Reddit is making its way to the big screen with the help of Ryan Reynolds. The Deadpool star is set to produce the adaptation of The Patient Who Nearly Drove Me Out of Medicine. The novella has its roots in a popular series of posts writer Jasper DeWitt published on the r/nosleep subreddit starting two years ago.
Netflix and Michael Bay to make an action movie starring Ryan Reynolds
If you thought Netflix's Bright was a big deal, you haven't seen anything yet. Netflix has reached a deal with Skydance Media to produce Six Underground, an action thriller directed by Michael Bay. The premise of the flick is still under wraps, but it'll borrow more than a little familiar talent: Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds will star in the film, while Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (conveniently, also from Deadpool) will both write and executive produce the story. Production starts in the summer with an expected release sometime in 2019.
Live-action 'Detective Pikachu' movie hits theaters in May 2019
You still have a long wait ahead before you can finally watch Pikachu solve crimes while sounding just like Deadpool. According to Deadline, Universal Pictures plans to start showing the live-action Detective Pikachu film outside of Japan on May 10th, 2019. The movie will star Ryan Reynolds as the clearly Sherlock-inspired talking Pikachu -- yes, the Pokémon -- who solves mysteries with his human sidekick. Reynolds will do both voice and motion capture work for the Pokémon, similar to what numerous actors have done for films rich in special effects, such Lupita Nyong'o as Maz Kanata in The Force Awakens.
Ryan Reynolds is Detective Pikachu
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the upcoming live-action Pokémon movie has found an actor for its title role: Ryan Reynolds. In a performance that its sources say is "motion-capture in nature" (think Jar Jar Binks or Gollum) Reynolds will embody Detective Pikachu alongside Justice Smith (The Get Down, Jurassic Park: The Lost Kingdom) as the teen searches for his missing father. Other details are scarce, but now the movie (which got its greenlight just as Pokémon Go fever exploded last year) is said to start shooting in January, and will include Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) in the cast. Just something to think about while you're watching Deadpool 2 in June.
'Deadpool' used way more CGI than you probably think it did
The folks behind last month's raucous Deadpool movie lied to you more than you probably could've imagined. That intro sequence that serves as a narrative framing device for practically the whole flick? Almost entirely composited together in post processing. As you'll see in the video below, during the opening car chase, even the merc with a mouth kicking the goon riding shotgun out of the Chevy SUV was a collection of polygons. But when an entire movie is as over the top as Deadpool, finding stunt performers who could withstand the level of abuse that's on display would probably be pretty difficult.
