Welsh nab their first native-tongued phone and iPhone app in one month's time -- Cymru am byth!
Native speakers of Welsh, take heed! Orange has announced that a Welsh-language version of the Samsung S5600 will be made available in September. This would make it the first cellphone to handle the language, which has some 600,000 native speakers in Wales. The phone will contain 44,000 Welsh words, and was recently unveiled in Bala, Gwynedd. Also unveiled simultaneously was the first Welsh iPhone app, developed with English-speakers learning the language in mind, and will have a companion "Learn Welsh" phrasebook available in the iTunes store. Samsung S5600 morphs into Blade for Vodafone
Somewhere along the line, some higher-up at Samsung clearly said "I've got it: geometry-themed d-pads." The rest, of course, is history -- Samsung ran with that theme, giving birth to the Jet and the Omnia II. But wait -- what if you could go back in time, take something like the S5600, and facelift it just a bit to give it a similarly unusual appearance? That's exactly what Vodafone has chosen to do in launching the midrange full-touch featurephone, apparently working with Sammy to add in a diamond-shaped nav pad and rechristen it the fierce-sounding "Blade." With a 3.2 megapixel cam, HSDPA, and GPS, it's nothing to sneeze at; whether it's worthy of a name as awesome as Blade, though, is another story altogether.[Via Unwired View]
Samsung's S5600 put through its paces, pre-production style
It'll be a little while yet before Samsung's latest touchphone for the masses hits the streets, but in the meantime, GSMArena's gone ahead and hooked itself up with an early preproduction unit for a hands-on preview. Some features -- most notably the camera -- weren't working, but what was functional seemed pretty well-equipped to take the midrange market head-on this year; the reviewers admit that the handset's pretty plain-looking, but the ergonomics work pretty well and the plastic seems to be of high quality. Interestingly, they found that the S5600's secretly equipped with GPS, despite Samsung's failure to make mention of it at the device's launch, so that's a nice little surprise -- and if you're into TouchWiz, you'll be delighted to know that the phone's equipped with the very latest incarnation. The site thinks that the S5600's media player is good enough to take on full-time duty, too, and the micro-USB port is a breath of fresh air coming from a company notorious for its proprietary connectors. Final verdict? If it can slide in under €250 (about $323), Sammy's got a winner.
Samsung officially intros S5230 and S5600 touchphones for Europe
We're well past the point of touchscreens being relegated to the high end, and Samsung's out to drive the point home with a pair of fresh ones destined for Europe over the coming months. Starting at the bottom, the S5230 tops out at EDGE speeds but features a commendable 3-inch WQVGA display, 3 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, FM radio, and naturally, TouchWiz -- and it's all shoved into a mere 11.9mm. The real high-speed action starts up in the S5600 that we heard a bit about after MWC, where we pick up 7.2Mbps HSDPA on the 900 and 2100MHz bands -- only problem is, you've got to step down to a 2.8-inch QVGA display to get it. It'll slide into retail come May, while the S5320 gets a little bit of a jump start, hitting shelves in April.
Samsung's touchscreen GT-S5600 sneaks by at Mobile World Congress
Samsung's GT-S5600 snuck past us at MWC last week -- which was bound to happen with so many things making an appearance -- but we're catching up now. This small and potentially lower-cost touchscreen features Samsung's TouchWiz UI, some type of cam, touchscreen display, and we're sure plenty of other goodies that we still have to figure out. While Mobile-review caught sight of it at the show, Samsung seems perfectly happy to remain tight-lipped about it, so hopefully we'll catch wind of more info in the near term.
