'Fortnite' is now available on Samsung Galaxy phones
The wildly popular game Fortnite came out for iOS back in April, leaving Android users eagerly awaiting its eventual release on the other mobile operating system. But rumors in the past couple weeks hinted that the game might debut on Samsung phones, and its app store, first. Those whispers were true: At today's Unpacked event, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney himself announced that the popular battle royale title is available in beta right now on its Galaxy phones. But that exclusive only lasts until the wider Android release coming August 12th, according to Android Central.
Samsung's latest app could help curb your kid's screen addiction
Samsung has an idea for how to encourage kids to use their devices responsibly. With its Marshmallow app (not the outdated version of Android), kids earn points by following their self-set usage plan. With the application installed and running, kids are limited to using eight apps, parents can filter which apps are and aren't appropriate and they can set a bed time for the phone as well.
Looking at Samsung Note 3 with Apple-centric eyes
There's a lot to like about the Galaxy Note 3. The new phablet's got a screen the size of a baby dolphin. It offers several interaction and multitasking innovations -- I particularly like the circle-to-copy and the pull-up calculator. Its fine-grained, stylus-based input gives users a lot more control than they get using touch. It's even got multi-unit screen-expanding built in, which is cool -- even if I imagine the chances of people using this feature in real life are quite low. In many ways, this new unit seems more like the descendant of the Palm than the iPhone, with a focus on a paper metaphor with stylus-based entry. I suspect that a lot of serious users whose workday used to focus on the Blackberry with its fine text-entry control will welcome this device. Samsung has thrown down a business user's phone, daring Apple to pick up that gauntlet at its event next week. While I'm not enamored by the beauty of the interface or the overall intuitive simplicity, it has smartly targeted its market -- users getting work done on the go. American Airlines to hand out Galaxy Note 'tablets' to 17,000 flight attendants (video)
Things aren't all Champagne and caviar over at American Airlines, not that you'd know it from the company's latest press release. The Dallas-based air carrier just shared a plan to outfit all of its flight attendants with Samsung Galaxy Notes beginning later this year. The rollout will continue through the middle of 2013, at which point each of the airline's 17,000 cabin crew members will have their very own "tablet," which they'll use to manage flight manifests, track premium passenger meal preferences and monitor weather and gate information in real-time, on WiFi-equipped flights. Eventually, the handsets will also include the flight attendant manual, along with additional features, such as processing for in-flight meal and drink purchases (pending FAA approval). Though the Galaxy Note II will likely be available by the time the program begins, the press release references a 5.3-inch display, which would imply the previous-gen handset. Sadly, this Note of excitement comes alongside news that some 11,000 American mechanics and ground workers could get a pink slip come November -- as frequent air travelers ourselves, we're genuinely sorry to hear that, and we don't want any gadget to overshadow the airline's ongoing troubles and the unfortunate fate of hardworking employees. Following Samsung's launch of the it's-definitely-a-tablet 10.1 Note, it's become even more clear that the company's stylus S Pen is here to stay, in a very big way. Samsung brings us more to love, offers Galaxy Note engraving in South Korea
Sure, you can draw whatever the heck you want on the front of your Galaxy Note, but what about that blank blue or white canvas 'round back? With north of a million 5.3-inch pocketable slates in circulation around the world, you'll need to get a bit more creative to truly make it yours -- and Samsung is willing to help. If a trip to South Korea is on the books between now and March 31st, you can now deck out your Note with custom messaging on the back, with the company letting customers "engrave wished letters on the backside of their own device with laser beams."
