Xbox's lack of compelling games won't be fixed next year

Microsoft's 2017 started six months early. At E3 2016, Xbox chief Phil Spencer closed out the company's keynote by teasing the "most powerful console ever." At this year's show, he finally revealed the Xbox One X, and in November, the hardware was at retail. In the time it takes to earn a bachelor's degree, Microsoft addressed one of the internet's loudest complaints about the Xbox One: that it wasn't powerful enough compared to the PlayStation 4.

  • The cancellation of 'Scalebound' is a huge blow for PlatinumGames

Scalebound is no more. Platinum's Xbox exclusive has been canceled by Microsoft, killing the dream of a Devil May Cry–meets–Last Guardian mashup. What a shame. I saw the game behind closed doors on two separate occasions and was left positively smitten with the concept. It centered on Drew, an arrogant, headphone-loving twenty-something lost in a world filled with dragons. With Thuban, an eventual friend and fire-breathing combat partner, he would scour floating islands and decimate mythical enemies large and small. Throughout the game you would control them both, slashing as Drew and throwing out commands to Thuban.

If you've been anticipating Platinum Games' Scalebound ever since it was unveiled in 2014, you're about to get some crushing news. In the wake of leaks from Kotaku and Eurogamer, Microsoft Studios has confirmed that the dragon action role-playing game has been cancelled. The company hasn't elaborated on why (you can read its statement below), but Eurogamer's sources describe it as the result of a rough development process that grew particularly tortuous in 2016.

Microsoft has a ton of Xbox exclusives in the pipeline. Gears of War 4, ReCore, Dead Rising 4, Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 3 -- the list goes on. Here at Gamescom, we've been speaking to the developers behind each title, listening to their pitches and, in some instances, going hands-on. So what impressed us and what didn't? I took 10 minutes with Engadget Senior Editor Aaron Souppouris to break it all down. (Hint: I really liked Scalebound...)

Scalebound is one of my most anticipated Xbox One games. It's a classic Platinum title, mixing over-the-top, combo-heavy combat with a gargantuan dragon that's willing to help you out in a pinch. Throw in a strange, luscious new world and some enormous, fantastical enemies, and you have a game that oozes both style and substance. Last year at Gamescom, Platinum founder Hideki Kamiya teased that players would be able to customize their dragons over the course of the campaign. Now, he's explained exactly how that will work. And, oh boy, am I excited.

Dragons? Check. A spiky-haired hero with attitude rivalling Dante from Devil May Cry? Check. Okay, so we must be talking about Scalebound. The action-RPG was originally slated to come out this fall, however in January developer PlatinumGames announced it had been pushed back to 2017. Today, Microsoft showed off the game's little-talked-about co-op mode, which allows you and a few friends to fight side by side. The trailer starts with the hero discovering an enormous crab-like creature, before watching his companions materialize with their dragons. The group then attacks with some ranged weaponry before switching to their winged companions, finally finishing up with some stylish melee combos. It's pretty epic.

We're not even a week into 2016 and already video games are being bumped to next year. PlatinumGames has announced that its Devil May Cry-meets-dragons RPG Scalebound has been pushed back to 2017 in order to deliver "all the innovative features and thrilling gameplay experiences" the team has planned. The title was previously slated for "fall 2016," meaning fans of Kamiya and Platinum's action-focused spectacles -- like Bayonetta, Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance -- will have to wait a little longer. At least the Xbox One has some other exclusives to fall back on this year, like Quantum Break, ReCore and Crackdown 3.

PlatinumGames is on a roll. The Japan-based studio is less than a decade old, but already it's put out a string of critically acclaimed titles such as Bayonetta, Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. It's built a reputation on fast-paced action and deep, rewarding combat, and now it wants to prove it can deliver a compelling RPG experience too. Scalebound, the studio's Xbox One exclusive, is scheduled for release in 2016 and until recently, we've seen little of the game beyond a short CG teaser. At Gamescom, the studio revealed a glimpse of its gameplay and now, after watching an extended demo, I've decided Scalebound is the Xbox exclusive I'm most excited about.

During its "Xbox Briefing" in Cologne, the company announced DVR functionality for 2016, a new controller chat pad and a host of special console bundles. We also saw a slew of trailers for upcoming games such as Quantum Break, Scalebound and Crackdown 3. In the video above we give our take -- but if you've got time to spare, it's also worth checking out the proceedings in full down below.

Platinum Games director Hideki Kamiya has announced his studio's next game: Scalebound. The Microsoft Studios published game will arrive exclusively on the Xbox One. A rendered trailer for the game was a mash-up of a fantasy world with some modern twists. A giant dragon lands with a thunderous thump near a young man who dons a pair of headphones. Suddenly, it's an all-out war of monsters and the trailer comes to a quick end. We hope to learn more at E3, which officially kicks off tomorrow.
