  • The Daily Grind: Do you attend player events?

Confession time! I am a total hypocrite: I love the idea of player events but I rarely attend them in-game. Actually, maybe that just makes me more lazy than hypocritical. I think that a player event can boast more ingenuity and yield more memories than developer efforts, even if players are hamstrung by not always having the tools to do everything they'd like. We've all heard stories of funerals, of PvP wars, of naked Gnome races, of scavenger hunts, of concerts, and of costume contests. But the question today concerns attendance. Do you go to player-created events or just read about them in the paper the next day? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

It came from the Blog is having another scavenger hunt and you're all invited. When: Tomorrow, March 30 at noon EDT (9 a.m. PDT, 10 a.m. server time) Where: Meet at the fountain in the Court of the Sun in Silvermoon City on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H) Who: Any Horde player, but you'll have a better chance of winning if you have a mount How: Just ask Tizzi or any It came from the Blog member if you aren't already in our family of guilds There will be 10 winners. The prize for each winner will be a choice of battle pets, some donated by guildies and some extras from my collection. All you have to do is complete the scavenger hunt and show the items in a trade window to me (Tizzi). The hunt will take place in a non-flying area, so only those with ground mounts will be at an advantage. You will need 25g (which will be provided to those that are new to the server and poor) and 37 spaces in your bags. (The list is a bit longer than usual to make it more challenging.) The items will be listed in /say at the event time, so that punctual players have an advantage. I will then repeat the list 15 minutes later in event chat. So come have some fun and maybe win a valuable battle pet. And remember, since battle pets are account-wide, you don't have to have your main on Zangarmarsh or even in the Horde in order to enjoy them. Please join us on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H) in It came from the Blog. All guild ranks can invite, so /whisper Tizzi or any online member. You are all welcome as long as you play by our simple rules -- basically, don't be a funsucker! Visit the guild FAQ for more details. FR

Another day, another Elite: Dangerous teaser video. But hey, this is a good thing, right? Yes, yes it is, especially because every little reveal helps build a bit of momentum for Frontier's crowdfunding project that's closing in on crunch time. Today's clip is called Scavenger Hunt, and it's exactly what it sounds like, albeit with a satisfying explosion at the end. Elite has exactly 14 days remaining on its Kickstarter drive and it's coming up on £900,000 (the goal is £1.25 million). Check out the vid after the break and then head to the fundraising site to learn more about the project.

  • Defcon 20 badges meld hieroglyphs, circuitry and cryptography for hacker scavenger hunt

    by
    Joseph Volpe

    07.27.2012

Every year, the world's hacker population descends upon Las Vegas to trade notes, sit in on informational talks and compete in friendly contests -- all in the name of Defcon. But this time out, it's the conference's ever-evolving smart badges that've caught our eye, owing mostly to what lurks beneath. Designed by Ryan Clarke -- the mastermind behind the gathering's Mystery Box challenge -- these hackable IDs, issued according to status (Press, Human, Goons, vendors, etc), come embedded with an LED, a multi-core processor, IR transmitter and accompanying hieroglyphic graphic. But that's not all that makes these high-tech tags so special. Turns out, each one contains a game, buried within its open source software, that's encoded with several cryptographic, linguistic and mathematical layers. Shying away from hardware-focused hacks of the past, Clarke built this year's scavenger hunt-like game to be more inclusive of attendee skills, as it'll force conference-goers interested in cracking its code to break down social barriers and collaborate with other highly-specialized nerds. What's the end game, you ask? Well, according to Clarke, the puzzle is a continuation of last year's secret agent story (played out by a real-life actor) involving "a [mysterious] society of computer elites." It's not the sort of payoff we'd be after -- something greener and covered with a certain Ben Franklin's face would suffice -- but it sounds intriguing enough. Click on the source below to read more about the makings of this geek sport. And may the pastiest neckbeard win!

Last month's It came from the Blog event was our second scavenger hunt, with a meet and greet right before. We met in the Court of the Sun in Silvermoon City, enjoying the peace and quiet of an empty city. (A round of less lag for everyone!) Several WoW Insider writers showed up for the meet and greet: Megan O'Neill as Poneria Dawn Moore as Aurorarun Matt Low as Matticus Anne Stickney as Annephora Elizabeth Wachowski as Moocowski Robin Torres as Roblinator (Yes, I'm always there, but I answered a couple of questions too.) Our new and veteran guildies put the WI crew through their paces. Matt answered healing questions. Anne tackled lore and roleplay questions. Elizabeth made it clear that Around Azeroth needs more screenshot submissions. And there was much rejoicing.

It came from the Blog events are fun. Scavenger Hunts are fun. Meeting WoW Insider writers is fun (even virtually). Mathematically speaking -- since fun is multiplicative -- we'll be having FUNx3 tonight. When: 10:30 p.m. EDT tonight (7:30 p.m. PDT, 8:30 p.m. server time) for the meet and greet and 11 p.m. EDT (8 p.m. PDT, 9 p.m. server) for the scavenger hunt Where: Meet near the fountain in the Court of the Sun, Silvermoon City on Zangarmarsh (US-PVE-H) Who: Any level Horde character. Gold will be provided to those who do not have enough. Tip: Mounted characters have an advantage, so making a death knight is a good idea if you are new to the server. What: Meet and greet with several of the WoW Insider staff, then a scavenger hunt through Eversong Woods for fun and prizes How: Ask any member of It came from the Blog for an invite, if you are not already in one of our family of guilds. The list of items will not be provided until just after the event starts. I will list them in /say and not repeat them for 10 minutes so that punctual participants will have an advantage. Your joining us is fun, by the way -- yes, I mean you particularly. So if you chat and hunt with us tonight, we'll have FUNx4. Obviously, you should join us. • Guest Post: Heroes hunting for screenshots

This article has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW.com. Early in August, <Hero Squad> of Bleeding Hollow (US-H) started a screenshot scavenger Hunt to distribute the five vanity items that are awarded when a Shadowmourne is created. The Shadowmourne chest contains five pretty sweet items. (Well, OK, maybe making a portal to Dalaran isn't exactly the games greatest reward.) A chance at any of these items would have most players bending over backwards, and our raiders are no different. A few months back, the officers sat down to figure out what to do with these items. We knew that we wanted to do something fun and memorable to hand out the first items. We brainstormed about 10 different types of games but eventually decided on a screenshot scavenger hunt.

This article has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW.com. Welcome to the doldrums of summer! This miserable time of year, when we see interest in raiding melt away as the temperature rises, can be a stressful time for even a well-established guild. A good way to combat the stress is to gather the remaining troops for a bit of a morale boost in the form of a little light-hearted, fun event such as a scavenger hunt. This article provides the able morale officer with everything he or she needs to know to prepare and run one such hunt, a variation called the Azerothian Riddle Hunt. The Azerothian Riddle Hunt combines 10 cheesy and not-quite-literarily correct rhymes with player knowledge of original Azeroth and the challenge of swift (or not-so-swift) travel around Azeroth, in order to create an event that can be both amusing and challenging. Once unraveled, each rhyme tells the player where to go to answer the question given in the rhyme's last line.

All of these keys will let you access the Sentinel's Fate headstart, which begins tomorrow! Need all the details? We have them right after the break!

"Seccia quickly looked over the treasured keys one last time. Her fingers lightly traced the ornate engravings on the two platinum and ten golden keys as a smile pulled itself across her lips. She took a deep breath before slowly wrapping them up in a large piece of canvas, hiding the package at the bottom of her backpack. "In a few short minutes she had finished packing her camping supplies and had donned her armor. Without a second look back across her apartment she quickly moved towards the front door, praying that the right adventurers would find her before it's too late." This Monday at 8:30 PM EST, join Massively as we set out on a bold quest across not only the face of Norrath, but the internet itself! Our intrepid Dark Elven reporter, Seccia Ravenloft, is holding the keys for brand new copies of EverQuest II's Sentinel's Fate collector's edition and retail edition! To claim them, however, one must track her down, wherever she is hiding, and politely request a key. Tracking her down, however, will lead you through multiple puzzles and riddles in a race against the rest of Norrath! You will need an active EverQuest II subscription to participate in this contest, readers, so be sure to reactivate if you're interested in winning yourself a brand new expansion pack. Full instructions will be posted here and on the EverQuest II Community News forum come Monday, so keep your eye out! Can you conquer the Keys of Fate?

    11.18.2009

We've been giving away these Creative World of Warcraft wireless headsets for a while now, one per week to one lucky winner (and grats to those of you who've already picked them up). But Creative also wanted to work with us to do something really epic, something only WoW.com could put together. And so we're going for the whole enchilada: we're giving away a set of twenty-five (that's right, 25, one per raid member in your group) Creative World of Warcraft wireless headsets. This is going to be the clearest, most amazing sounding group on Vent ever -- not a single person in your raid will have to say "sorry, no mic." So how do you win? Obviously an epic contest like this requires an epic entry, so here's how we're going to do it: after the break on this post, you'll find a list of five different riddles, each one hinting at a different place in the game.

  • Fallen Earth staging a scavenger hunt contest for beta players

    by
    James Egan
    James Egan
    07.09.2009

The team at Fallen Earth have announced a July 11th contest for beta testers of their post-apocalyptic MMO. Given the title's setting, you'd imagine they'd give out prizes like a lawnmower-blade boomerang or a tommy rivet gun. Fallen Earth's legal department felt otherwise. They've opted for less deadly prize giveaways, but no less useful: an Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 video card, Razer Death Adder gaming mice, and of course various bits of Fallen Earth swag. Fallen Earth beta testers who take part in the July 11 stress test (12pm - 3pm EST), for 30 minutes or more, are automatically eligible to win prizes. But they can also increase their odds of winning that gear by competing in the Scavenger Challenge, with details to be announced on the Fallen Earth forums on the day of the contest. Essentially, the devs will post a list of items that can be found in-game. Each item found will count as another entry in the contest. If you're a Fallen Earth beta tester, you can find more info and contest rules on their Scavenger Challenge announcement page.

  • Celebrating a guild anniversary in style

    by
    Mike Schramm
    Mike Schramm
    06.19.2009

Pink Pigtail Inn has what is probably the most involved guild anniversary I've ever seen. We've seen quite a few anniversaries and events come through Guildwatch, but this one takes the cake: a huge competitive scavenger hunt, complete with out-of-game clues, banned class abilities (so teams could be balanced out), and even self-made quests involving the guild's lore. It's probably rare to find a group of officers that can be this committed to something normally considered "an RP event," but obviously it worked out, because the whole guild really enjoyed it.The context Larisa puts this in, however, is even more interesting. According to the Daedalus Project (a series of surveys of MMO players -- we've mentioned their work before), the majority of players can't celebrate a guild's anniversary anyway, as they haven't been in their guilds for even a year yet. I've never considered it, but it's true: while we are very attached to our guildies when we do find a good guild, we aren't really attached to them for very long, relatively speaking. There are stories of guilds going on for decades, but even those guilds have players coming and going -- if your guild has the same group of people playing together for a few years, you're probably in a smaller group than you think. PPI's example is a great one for any guilds who have been around long enough to celebrate it.

  • BlizzPlanet is giving away some BlizzCon tix

    05.20.2009

Our good friends at BlizzPlanet have obtained a ticket to the happiest place on Earth (BlizzCon, of course -- right next to some dump called Disneyland), and they're giving it away over on their site. There are a few hoops to jump through, but then again, how much do you want to go to BlizzCon? They will have you hunting around their archives for a few things, running over to the Mountain Dew website to earn some points and take a screenshot, and even checking out some comic books over at DC (their contest is probably part of the official fansite program, which would explain why you'll be visiting lots of Blizzard's licensing partners). Do all that stuff by June 9th, and be one of the lucky winners, and you'll pick yourself up one of three shiny tickets to Blizzard's big event in Anaheim. It looks like airfare and hotel might be on your own, but no worries -- you can eBay the goodie bag stuff and use that money to put yourself up in Anaheim for both nights. Everybody wins! Good luck -- if you end up being chosen as the winner, be sure to come say hi to us while you're there.
