What do you get when you bring together the force behind Metal Gear Solid, not to mention Castlevania, Gradius, and about a dozen other video game icons, with the developers of last year's squad-based shooter Jericho? No really, we're curious, because honestly we haven't a clue. Konami and Spanish devs Mercury Steam have partnered for a mysterious new project for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, a game that Konami calls "a major part" of its release schedule for 2009-10. The project, whatever it is, is being overseen by Konami's European footprint, which is just wrapping up work on New International Track and Field for the Nintendo DS. Beyond this nothing -- and we mean nothing -- is known about the new game, through given Mercury Steam's track record of tepid action adventure titles (Scrapland anyone?), it's impossible to care too much yet.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Though most GameTap subscribers will probably be downloading the final Sam and Max of the season today, a few other offerings are also joining the world's furriest detectives on the service this week. First up is Scrapland, the last game American McGee made before he smashed the Irony-O-Meter into subatomic particles by moving the whole operation to China and building a vast army of wage slaves. The game has an average score of 72 on Metacritic, so fans of mediocrity have plenty to be excited about. Like some sort of Pokémon fan gone horribly astray, GameTap has also continued its maniacal quest to catalog the entirety of the adventure genre, both the good and the unspeakable. You may now count Return to Mysterious Island and Voyage (two of our favorite games inspired by Jules Verne) alongside Sentinel and Mysterious Journey II amongst their throng. ... Wow, Sam and Max just can't download quick enough, can they?

American McGee is looking for a few dark, twisted types to join his new independent studio in Shanghai, as he prepares to ride the wave of two contemporary trends in the gaming industry: episodic content and Chinese food. With Bad Day L.A. set to launch soon, the man behind Alice and Scrapland is now focusing his attention on building "an episodic game set in a dark, fairy tale universe." This project could be related to Oz or Grimm, a pair of graphic novels McGee is producing with Cellar Door Publishing.A former game designer for id Software and Electronic Arts, McGee also founded The Mauretania Import Export Company, and has served as the Creative Director for Enlight Software.
