Sega's next wave of 3D-enhanced Classics looks set to begin January 15 with After Burner 2, going by new eShop listings. Nintendo's storefronts in North America and Europe have the arcade air fighter down for that date, though Sega's yet to make any announcements. We've reached out to the publisher to confirm the ETA for some top-gunning action. According to its eShop description After Burner 2 includes 23 stages and comes with a selection of "real arcade cabinets," new difficulty settings, new graphical options, and the standard Classics addition of stereoscopic 3D. Also, if you beat all 23 stages you unlock an extra mode that features "even more gameplay enhancements."

Fantasy Zone 2: The Tears of Opa-Opa is the next game that will get the Sega 3D Classics treatment on 3DS, joining the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco the Dolphin, Super-Hang On, Space Harrier and the original Fantasy Zone. Like its predecessor, Fantasy Zone 2 is a side-scrolling shooter set in a vibrant, colorful universe. Apart from the obvious addition of 3D visuals, Fantasy Zone 2 will include the same kinds of modern perks as other 3D Classics. Players will be able to adjust the difficulty and number of lives, remap controls and listen to the game's soundtrack. Furthermore, it will also include an endless score attack mode called "Link Loop Land." Fantasy Zone 2 hits the Japanese eShop on July 16. Assuming it follows along with other 3D Classics, it will eventually see a worldwide release.

I never really thought much about Space Harrier. I like vintage Sega just fine, I just never spent much time with that particular game for whatever reason. Then I read this interview with M2, who ported it and the rest of the Sega 3D Classics line to 3DS, and I resolved to buy 3D Space Harrier as soon as it was released. M2's obsessive love of Space Harrier, evident in the overwhelming, comical level of detail applied to the port, was the most ringing endorsement possible. The care put into the port made me care more about the game, showing the persuasive power of a truly bespoke adaptation. And by giving me cause to reevaluate Space Harrier, Sega's 3D Classics line allowed me to see just how well it holds up.
